Archbishop John Francis Noll ? founder OSV - Today's Catholic News

?Priest, journalist, apologist, catechist and publisher??

?John Francis Noll, fifth bishop of Fort Wayne, Indiana, and founder of Our Sunday Visitor, was one of the most influential Catholics of his day. His accomplishments were legion; he made his mark on nearly all of the major Catholic ventures of his time, and many of the institutions and works that he founded or influenced are still thriving today, although he died in 1956. His life spanned one of the most tumultuous periods of American Catholic history, from the era of Pope Pius IX and the First Vatican Council to the threshold of change inspired by Vatican Council II. He lived during a period of unprecedented expansion and immigration in this country, when the American Church was growing exponentially. Catholics in America needed a sense of identity, a sense of self-confidence and pride. ? A great churchman, Noll was always concerned with the welfare not only of his own diocese, but also of the Church at large. He stands today as the most outstanding Catholic publisher in America,? wrote Ann Ball in a ?Preface,? who with Father Leon Hutton, authored ?Champion of the Church: The Extraordinary Life and Legacy of Archbishop Noll? ? Our Sunday Visitor Publishing Division, 2006.

?John Noll was a missionary at heart, whose influence extended through the printed word and his work as a bishop in the Catholic hierarchy. Through his leadership and strength of character, he aspired to educate against religious bigotry, racism and prejudice. He fought anti-Catholicism in all its forms. He promoted the values of a nation based on the principle of ?One Nation Under God,?? added Father Hutton in the introduction to ?Champion of the Church.?

?One of the things that I think is under appreciated is that ? for all intense and purposes he came out of nowhere,? said Greg Erlandson, president of Our Sunday Visitor Publishing Division. ?He was what is now known as an early adopter. He embraced the communication tools of his day ? print, radio and television ? with an eye toward how they could best serve the mission of the Church,? said Erlandson in the forward to ?Champion of the Church.?

?He had an incredible gift for writing and speaking, and was challenging the anti-Catholics in the area. In any sort of national sense, he was a diocesan priest who came from a small town in the northeast corner of Indiana, and he built this national and international organization,? Erlandson said. ?He was really an amazing man and a great treasure for the diocese. And what pride the diocese can take in that one of their own created an enterprise that now is involved with the Vatican ? we?ve published 16 books by Pope Benedict XVI ? all of this has come from an idea he had in 1912 for a national Catholic newspaper.?

?While an apologist and teacher first and foremost, Father Noll was also a brilliant entrepreneur, and he soon built up a publishing empire,? wrote Erlandson in an article titled ?Toward a Second Century? published in The Priest, September 2012. ?He was a prolific pamphleteer, the author of books and a preacher who was unafraid to address the issues of his day. He saw Protestant churches using offering envelopes and was the first to adopt the idea for the Catholic Church,? he continued. ?He was also an early adopter of new technologies. He owned one of the first radios in Huntington and also one of the first television sets. He traveled widely and was always on the lookout for new ideas that he could adopt or develop.?

?? Father John Noll, then pastor of St. Mary?s Church in Huntington, Indiana, with funds from his own pocket, purchased a printing press for $10 and began Our Sunday Visitor. ? The greatest example furnished by Father Noll, and an objective of Our Sunday Visitor now as throughout its years, has been to summon Catholics ? and priests ? not to fear, to stand tall, and to speak out. After all, believers ? and priests ? have in their very faith the most empowering of understandings, and the best of blueprints. ?Come to me all you who are burdened, and I will refresh you,?? wrote Msgr. Owen F. Campion in an article titled ?Our Sunday Visitor at 100? in the September 2012 issue of The Priest, which he serves as editor along with his position as associate publisher of Our Sunday Visitor.?

?The father of OSV was a priest, pastor, journalist, apologist, catechist and publisher. He was also a bishop and then an archbishop and is honored especially as one of the great pioneers in Catholic publishing,? Matthew E. Bunson wrote in The Priest, September 2012, in an article titled, ?The Bish.? Bunson is editor of OSV?s Catholic Almanac and The Catholic Answer magazine.

?John Noll was born on Jan. 25, 1875, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and studied for the priesthood at Mount St. Mary of West Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio. Ordained to the priesthood at the age of 23, he was named pastor of St. Patrick Church in Ligonier within a year and served his flock by walking or riding a horse.?

?Within a short time after he started in active ministry, Father Noll discovered that there were very determined enemies of the Church across the country, including Indiana, who were spreading the worst kinds of lies about Catholicism,? continued Bunson. ?? Father Noll created the first in a series of pamphlets on Catholic teachings that he titled ?Kind Words From Your Pastor.? Given the overwhelmingly favorable response, he began offering them to pastors in the area and soon across the country.?

?? To keep up with the demand for subscriptions, Father Noll purchased a local print shop in Huntington, Indiana, where he was assigned in 1910, and hired a staff to help him,? said Bunson. ?? Noll realized that more Catholic publications were needed, ? and in 1911, he helped found the Catholic Press Association to give technical and material support to Catholic publishers and publications. Next, on May 5, 1912, he officially launched a new national weekly newspaper, Our Sunday Visitor, with an initial print run of 35,000 and a determination to serve the Church by offering in each edition a strong, steady and authentic Catholic voice.?

?The newspaper cost a penny and was an instant hit. ? For the next 40 years, the priest served as editor and came to be known to the staff simply as ?The Bish,?? he wrote.

?? Noll received the title of monsignor in 1921, and through his accomplishments as a publisher, he was fast establishing himself as a nationally known priest and an influential voice in Catholic publishing,? wrote Bunson. ?Given his prominence and the level of respect he had earned in the Church in the United States, few were surprised by the news that Noll had been named bishop of Fort Wayne by Pope Pius XI on May 12, 1924. He was ordained a bishop on June 30 and took as his motto, ?Mentes Tuorum Visita,? from the hymn ?Veni Creator Spiritus,? calling upon the Holy Spirit to ?visit the minds of Your people.??

?? On Jan. 3, 1926, Bishop Noll introduced a diocesan newspaper, essentially a local edition of Our Sunday Visitor (ed. note: currently called Today?s Catholic but no longer a part of Our Sunday Visitor),? Bunson continued. The bishop also used Our Sunday Visitor facilities to print the newspapers of other dioceses who found his model of Catholic communication a powerful means of evangelization.?

?Bishop Noll?s prominent national status also made him a valued voice in wider Catholic affairs,? wrote Bunson. ?He was appointed secretary of the recently founded National Catholic Welfare Conference (the early form of today?s United States Conference of Catholic Bishops) and used his role in the conference to help start the Catholic News Service and the ?Catholic Hour? on NBC radio. In 1933, he helped to begin the Legion of Decency to resist the growing threat of pornography.?

?Bishop Noll next led the national fund-raising campaign to complete work on the National Shrine (later Basilica) of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C., using Our Sunday Visitor as a means of galvanizing donations. The shrine was dedicated on Nov. 20, 1959, and Noll was honored for his leadership with the title ?Apostle of the Shrine.??

Bunson continued, ?? On Sept. 12, 1953, Bishop Noll was granted the personal title of archbishop by Pope Pius XII, meaning it was bestowed upon him alone and would not be continued by the succeeding bishops of the Diocese of Fort Wayne. ? His passing on July 31, 1956, was greeted with immense sadness across the diocese and the nation. His funeral was attended by more than 10,000 people, 500 priests, 30 archbishops and bishops and two cardinals. ? At exactly the time he was needed most by American Catholicism, Archbishop Noll provided imagination, strength, love for the Church and a willing embrace of innovation in publishing and social communication that are still being felt today.?

One in every two cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in soldiers remains undiagnosed. This is the conclusion reached by a working group led by Hans-Ulrich Wittchen et al. They report their study in the current issue of Deutsches rzteblatt International (Dtsch Arztebl Int 2012; 109(35): 559), which is a special issue focusing on the prevalence of psychological stress in German army soldiers. In a second original article, results reported by Jens T Kowalski and colleagues show that more female soldiers contact the psychosocial support services provided by Germany's armed forces than their male colleagues (Dtsch Arztbl Int 2012; 109 (35): 559).

Wittchen et al. draw attention to the fact that thus far no information has been available on how commonly soldiers have traumatic experiences during deployments to Afghanistan and develop PSTD. In their study, 85% of all soldiers deployed overseas reported at least one distressing event, but usually several such events. Overseas deployment is associated with twice or four times the risk of PTSD for soldiers. In international comparison, the prevalence of PTSD is notably lower in German soldiers, at 2.9%, than in soldiers from other countries who are deployed in the same regions. However, the estimated proportion of undiagnosed and untreated cases of PTSD is 45%.

Kowalski et al. explain that it is not only Afghanistan from where soldiers return in a traumatized state but also Kosovo. The number of Kosovo returnees with mental problems in their study increased significantly compared to the number of traumatized soldiers returning from Afghanistan. The study is based on hospital data of all German army psychiatric wards; these data evaluated the psychiatric morbidities between January 2010 through June 2011. The most common diagnoses were adjustment disorders, PSTD, and mild and moderate depressive episodes.

U.S. West should expect bigger wildfires more often: report

SALMON, Idaho (Reuters) - A warming trend has contributed to a sharp rise in the number and size of wildfires on forest lands in the U.S. West, where big burns are likely to become the norm, according to a report released on Tuesday by a climate research group.

The average annual number of fires that cover more than 1,000 acres has nearly quadrupled in Arizona and Idaho and doubled in California, Colorado and six other Western states since 1970, the study by Climate Central showed.

The report, which analyzed 42 years of records about fires on U.S. Forest Service lands in 11 Western states, linked rising spring and summer temperatures in the region to a fire season that begins earlier, ends later and sparks larger, more frequent blazes.

Those include so-called megafires, or blazes that raze upward of 10,000 acres. Those fires erupted at a rate seven times greater each year in the past decade in the western United States than in an average year in the 1970s, according to the report.

The 2012 fire season in the West has claimed several lives, torched hundreds of homes and forced the evacuation of thousands of residents. Record blazes have also been recorded in New Mexico and Oregon.

Conditions contributing to the increase often include fire suppression practices that fostered forests packed with fuel, early melting of mountain snows and fire seasons in the West that now last 10 weeks longer than in the 1970s, the report said.

NEW PHENOMENON

Richard Wiles, director of research for Climate Central - a nonprofit scientific research organization that reports on climate change - said the data showed massive wildfires greater than 100,000 acres do not appear in records before the late 1980s.

"It may be a relatively new phenomenon for national forests," he said.

Steven Running, professor of ecology at the University of Montana, reviewed the report and told Reuters in an interview that Western states should prepare for more of the same.

In addition to lives and property, the fires threaten human health by pumping smoke, containing noxious gases like carbon monoxide and fine particles, into mountain valleys where historic settlements gave way to present-day communities.

"What public health people need to understand is these may be multi-week or even multi-month episodes and what is needed is a longer term plan to address health issues," said Running.

The pollution emitted by the burning of trees and plants can irritate eyes and lungs and worsen chronic heart and lung diseases, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Exposure to smoke from landscape fires causes 339,000 deaths a year worldwide, mostly in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia, according to a study in May in "Environmental Health Perspectives," a peer-reviewed journal published by the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences.

Pollution levels from wildfires this year have triggered numerous air quality warnings in parts of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming.

In Idaho, health and environmental officials said a weeks-long pollution event in Salmon from a 320,000-acre wildfire just north of the east central Idaho community is unprecedented.

"This is the only time we've seen this and there does not seem to be an end in sight," said Jim Vannoy, program manager for environmental health education and assessment with the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

MassGOP delivers birthday cake to Elizabeth Warren, ?matriarch? of Occupy Wall Street

In celebration of the Occupy Wall Street movement?s first birthday the Massachusetts Republican Party on Monday delivered a cake to Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren?s campaign event in Dorchester, Mass.

?As Professor Warren?s radical Occupy movement turns one, we thought we would help celebrate her proud moment by delivering a birthday cake on the campaign trail,? Nate Little, executive director of MassGOP, explained in a statement.

?It?s not every day that someone creates the intellectual foundation for an extremist protest movement calling for the end of capitalism, and Professor Warren?s accomplishment should not go unnoticed by Massachusetts voters.?

A Web video released by the Massachusetts Republican Party, titled ?Happy Birthday,? replays mayhem that Occupy protests have caused and recalls that Warren proudly claimed credit for the protests.

OccupyWarrenCake

?I created much of the intellectual foundation for what they do,? Warren said last October. ?I support what they do.?

The minute-long video featuring a small child singing ?Happy Birthday? labels Warren ?The Matriarch? of the Occupy movement and cuts back and forth between footage of headlines about Warren claiming credit for Occupy and the chaos wrought by the movement.

?Elizabeth Warren. Too Radical,? the ad concludes.

The RealClearPolitics polling average has Warren leading incumbent Sen. Scott Brown 43.8 percent to 41.8 percent.

DNA tags may dictate bee behavior

Chemical alterations affect genetic activity but not content

Web edition : Tuesday, September 18th, 2012

Reversible changes that dictate how genes function may determine what jobs honeybees do in the hive.

Worker honeybees are literally born to be nurses that take care of larvae. After two to three weeks, the workers become foragers. That career change is accompanied by the addition of chemical tags called methyl groups to some of their genes, says a team of researchers led by epigeneticist Andrew Feinberg of Johns Hopkins University and biologist Gro Amdam of Arizona State University in Tempe and the Norwegian University of Life Sciences in Aas.

The addition of chemical tags, tweaks known as epigenetic modifications, changes genes? activity but doesn?t alter the genes themselves. In honeybees, these modifications are also reversible: Forager bees that go back to being nurses also revert to the epigenetic pattern seen in nurses, the researchers report online September 16 in Nature Neuroscience.

Although other researchers have previously detected different patterns of chemical tags between nurses and foragers, this is the first time behavior changes have been linked to reversal of those patterns. ?

?This is an exciting paper because it implicates epigenetics in the establishment and stability of distinct behavioral predispositions,? says Gene Robinson who studies bees, genes and behavior at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The new study does not show that methylation changes cause bees to behave differently, but it does show that behavior and epigenetic modifications are both reversible and associated with each other.

For the new study, Amdam and her colleagues set up bee colonies in which all the workers were the same age. The researchers continually removed larvae just before hatching so no relief workers could be added to the workforce. Dots of paint distinguished foragers from nurses. An analysis of the chemical tags in bee brains showed that the nurse-to-forager career transition was associated with dropped or added epigenetic tags on 155 different genes.

When all the foragers were out of the colony, Amdam and her colleagues snatched the remaining nurses. After a few days of confusion, some foragers returned to their old nursing jobs. That reversion was accompanied by DNA methylation changes in 107 genes, including 57 involved in the original nurse-to-forager change, the team found.

Epigeneticists would have predicted a result similar to these findings, says Wolf Reik, an epigeneticist who studies wasps at the Babraham Institute in Cambridge, England. ?This is not surprising, but it is actually quite exciting to see it,? Reik says.

Researchers in Australia had previously described epigenetic differences between queens and workers, a difference Feinberg and Amdam?s analysis failed to uncover. Reik and Solenn Patalano, also of the Babraham Institute, attribute the different findings to the age of the bees in the studies. The Australian group studied established workers and queens, while the new study examined newly emerged bees. Epigenetic patterns are shaped over time by experience, age and interactions with the environment. So the differences noted in the earlier study might reflect the different experiences queens and workers encounter in their lifetimes.

Similarly, Ryszard Maleszka, an epigeneticist at the Australian National University in Canberra who led the earlier studies, isn?t convinced that reversing epigenetic tags causes bees to revert to old behaviors. Rather, flexible tags may reflect the reverted nurses? switch from flying alone in a visually exciting world to returning to a dark, crowded nest alive with smells.?

Sexually Aroused Women Are Harder To Gross Out

60-Second Science

Sexual arousal dampens the disgust response in women, both in the bedroom and outside of it. Ian Chant reports.

More 60-Second Science

Sex can be, well, kinda gross. So how do we have sex?

Once we?re turned on, it turns out, it gets harder for icky stuff to turn us off. Women, anyway. Gross things just don?t seem as gross when gals feel amorous. So says a study in the journal PLoS ONE. [Charmaine Borg and Peter J. de Jong, Feelings of Disgust and Disgust-Induced Avoidance Weaken following Induced Sexual Arousal in Women]

Researchers found that sexual arousal dampens the disgust response in women, both in the bedroom and outside of it. In the study, 3 groups of women?unaroused, generally aroused, and specifically sexually aroused?were assigned a series of tasks associated with a disgust response.

Some tasks were sexual, like lubricating a vibrator. Others were really unsexy, such as drinking from a cup with a big insect in it. Sexually aroused women were the most ready to lubricate sex toys?but they were also less squeamish than the other women about drinking from the bug cup.

The goal is to advance the treatment of sexual dysfunction and the lowered levels of arousal that can underlie it. So that people will say yes to the mess.

(AP) ? Paul Thomas Anderson's cult drama "The Master" commanded a huge following in its opening weekend, smashing records on just a handful of screens.

The Weinstein Co. release made $729,745 in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles for a record-setting per-screen average of $145,949, according to Sunday studio estimates. The hugely anticipated film, which just won several of the top awards at the Venice Film Festival and will open in more cities in upcoming weeks, stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic cult leader and Joaquin Phoenix as his wayward protege.

The No. 1 film at the box office was "Resident Evil: Retribution," which took in an estimated $21.1 million in its debut. This is the fifth film in the Sony Screen Gems action franchise, starring Milla Jovovich.

That topped the 3-D re-release of the Disney Pixar animated favorite "Finding Nemo," which opened in second place with $17.5 million.

The 3-D "Resident Evil: Retribution" was directed by Jovovich's husband, Paul W.S. Anderson, who has made three of the five films. It features the actress once again as the warrior Alice, the last hope for the human race as an evil corporation unleashes a deadly virus that creates more flesh-eating undead on a worldwide scale. And fittingly, the film performed even better internationally, where it made a healthy $50 million.

"You have to give so much credit for that to Milla," said Rory Bruer, Sony's head of distribution. "She's such an incredible star and absolutely just works so hard in every country. Whether it's Russia or Japan, everywhere she's gone, she's worked so hard in regards to making the franchise a success."

The re-do of "Finding Nemo" follows in a recent tradition of Disney converting its classic animated movies into 3-D for a whole new audience. The 2003 underwater comedy about a tiny, lost fish named Nemo, featuring the voices of Albert Brooks, Ellen DeGeneres and Willem Dafoe, won the Academy Award for best animated feature.

Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com, said the No. 1-opening for the latest "Resident Evil" movie came as a bit of a surprise. He figured "Finding Nemo" would come out on top, given the track record of the Pixar brand and the strong opening a year ago of Disney's "The Lion King" in 3-D, which debuted at No. 1 with $30.1 million.

"The Screen Gems label, they know how to create a profit-making franchise," Dergarabedian said. "It's become so important if you have a star who resonates in the international marketplace ? you can have a real winner worldwide."

Last week's No. 1 movie, the Lionsgate exorcism thriller "The Possession," fell to third place with an estimated $5.8 million. It's now made about $41.2 million over the past three weeks.

Among the other new movies this weekend, "Arbitrage" opened in 12th place in limited release with nearly $2.1 million. Richard Gere stars as a hedge-fund billion juggling scandals that could destroy him personally and professionally.

The huge opening for "The Master" beats the per-screen-average record for a live-action feature debut set earlier this year by Wes Anderson's "Moonrise Kingdom," which made $522,996 when it opened on four screens in May for an average of $130,749.

Asked who the audience was for "The Master," Weinstein Co. president of theatrical distribution Erik Lomis said: "We didn't do exit polls but from eyeballing the ArcLight (Cinemas), everyone in Los Angeles showed up."

Part of the allure was the rare opportunity to see the film projected in lush 70mm, which was possible at four of the five locations where it was playing. Expertly paced trailers released over the past few months revealed nothing, and unannounced screenings in select cities created more buzz. And some of the film's mystique may have come from its parallels to the origins of the secretive Church of Scientology. Anderson has said the church's founder, L. Ron Hubbard, provided inspiration for Hoffman's character.

"We knew we would do a lot of business but we didn't think it would be this big," Lomis said. "We knew from not only the pop-up screenings and the guerrilla marketing PTA does but also from the Venice Film Festival and the Toronto (International) Film Festival that we had something special. But you can never expect these kinds of numbers ? it blew the doors off the theaters."

As Dergarabedian phrased it: "Paul Thomas Anderson, among film buffs and film fans, is a directing god. He's on Mount Rushmore with Christopher Nolan and some other great filmmakers. When he puts out a movie, it's a long lead time ? we're forced to wait for a new Paul Thomas Anderson film. 'There Will Be Blood' was 2007.

"In the independent world, directors are the stars," he added. "They draw people to the theater and fill theaters."

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com. Where available, latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.

1. "Resident Evil: Retribution," $21.1 million ($50 million international).

2. "Finding Nemo," $17.5 million.

3. "The Possession," $5.8 million.

4. "Lawless," $4.2 million.

5. "ParaNorman," $3 million.

6. "The Expendables 2," $3 million.

7. "The Words," $2.88 million.

8. "The Bourne Legacy," $2.875 million.

9. "The Odd Life of Timothy Green," $2.5 million.

10. "The Campaign," $2.4 million.

I am dying a slow death in camp ? 80-yr-old victim of flood

By AbdulSalam Muhammad, Kano

Pa Garba Tanka ,octogenarian victim of the flash flood that sacked five villages in Warawa local government area of Kano State, is alarmed about the poor? condition at Tanka resettlement centre where he and several others are camped, saying? ?I?m? dying a slow death here.?

Tanka? said? life at the resettlement centre was killing him fast and therefore called on the authorities? to return him? to his Laraban Gadon Sarki village.

He told Sunday Vanguard that he left his village for the resettlement centre on Wednesday evening following early warning by the local government of? the Kano River overflowing, stressing that he escaped with his family including? his grand children. Sitting under a tree in the camp, a? public school, Tanka, 80, ?painted a gory story of life at the camp.?From? all indications, ?I?m stranded here. For two days running now, I have not eaten anything; no food, no water. The little assistance coming from local government officials is simply for the survival of the fittest, and it appears everyone is on his own ?.

The old man, surrounded by eight grand children within? ages 2 and 4, lamented that the relocation had? suddenly exposed him to the other side of life, pointing at the little children and saying. ?They are the only people that have shown faithfulness to me since we opened a? new chapter in our lives in the last couple of days?.

Looking frail and tired, he said he could? not walk, not to talk of queuing for food, adding:?My legs are swollen and I can not rely on them and that consigned me to this same spot over the last three days here?.

Asked on his readiness to be resettled outside the flood prone areas, Tanka said: ?It can only happen over my dead body. Relocate to where?? I have lived in my community for 80 years, and I?m experiencing this disaster for the second time in 12 years.

?Our ancestor have a reason for choosing? this area as our abode, it has served us well and we have everything to be grateful to Almighty Allah for His blessing, and I see no reason why I should think of relocating because of? a? passing phenomenal?.

Officials of the council seemed? fully aware of the old man?s plight but? not prepared to dabble into what they described as a ?carry over? problem, for, according to them, doctors assigned to the open camp confirmed that the man was suffering from anemia.

Ahmad Haruna Bichi, Director Personnel Management , Warawa local government council, said? ?it is practically impossible for anyone to develop anemia in one day?, adding that Pa? Tanka?s? case had existed long before the flash flood ravaged the hamlet.

The DPM revealed that ?we are very conscious of the vulnerable group in the camp and we are certainly doing our best to ensure that they were given adequate attention in line with the rules? guiding the open camp?.

Bichi further disclosed that the authorities of Hadejia /Jama?are River Basin Development Authority had put them on notice over the impending disaster , stressing that same message was conveyed to the people.

He explained? that no fewer than five? light boats were deployed to ferry those trapped inside the village, in addition to several local divers to guide those fleeing the villages on their own outside official arrangement.

He stated that over 10,000 people were displaced, unspecified numbers of livestock washed away, but was however quick to add that no life was lost.

Comments are moderated. Please keep them clean and brief.

Endangered mountain yellow-legged frogs might get a hoppy ending

To reach one of the last wild populations of the mountain yellow-legged frog on Earth, Adam Backlin and Elizabeth Gallegos tramped down a no-nonsense trail, scaled cliffs and barged through nettles along a vein of water in a scowling canyon deep in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Finally, the U.S. Geological Survey field biologists reached the headwaters of the Mojave River, about 15 miles west of Wrightwood. They forded pools and crawled through underbrush to net as many of the endangered frogs as possible and methodically record their vital statistics.

Recent efforts to save the frogs have included restricting public access and ridding the water of predatory trout. Now, the fist-sized amphibians are breeding in numbers not seen in decades.

When Backlin and Gallegos visited recently, several hundred adult frogs shared the knee-deep pools with hundreds of wiggling tadpoles and dime-sized babies.

"Whoa!" Backlin shouted, diving head first into a tangle of branches shading a small patch of water boiling with frogs. With one sweep of the net, he pulled out half a dozen. In less than three hours, the biologists captured 71 adults of the species scientists know as Rana muscosa. Fifty-two had been tagged during previous forays into the canyon. But 19 were new frogs.

Two years ago, this 1.5-mile stretch of spring water and ice melt was thought to hold about five.

With skin as permeable as a mop, the species is susceptible to a skin fungus linked to amphibians vanishing around the world. And the fungus and its waterborne zoospores have been detected in mountain yellow-legged frogs.

Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis is a chytrid fungus first identified in 1998. It causes a thickening of the skin, which impairs gas exchange and the animal's ability to absorb water, triggering rapid, mass die-offs.

"Exactly how they these frogs are surviving the fungus is a mystery," Backlin said. "One theory is that after the fungus first swept through the San Gabriels in the 1960s ? wiping out up to 90% of the entire frog population ? survivors somehow developed an immunity." Biologists will study possible defense mechanisms as they search for a cure to the fungus.

The life and times of mountain yellow-legged frogs embody the challenges facing species ? and wildlife biologists ? in Southern California. For thousands of years, the frogs thrived in almost all of the creeks cascading down the San Bernardino, San Gabriel and San Jacinto mountains.

Since the 1960s, however, the species has been decimated by fires, mudslides, pesticides, fungal infections and loss of habitat, as well as the appetites of garter snakes, raccoons and nonnative fish, bullfrogs and crayfish.

Recent efforts by zoos in Los Angeles, San Diego and Fresno to reintroduce captive-bred frogs into their ancestral haunts have had limited success.

For the time being, the creation of trout-free zones in hard-to-reach streams is one of the most effective survival strategies. For example, in a remote corner of the San Jacinto Mountains, the frogs are starting to recolonize sections of Fuller Mill Creek where fish were removed by the California Department of Fish and Game and the U.S. Forest Service.

Usually found on sunny banks and rocks near riffles, the 3-inch-long frogs are named for the bright yellow extending from the undersides of the hind legs onto the lower abdomen.

"Amphibians in general, and frogs in particular, are resilient ? if you give them a chance, they rebound," said Sam Sweet, professor of ecology and evolution at UC Santa Barbara. "One reason they produce huge numbers of eggs is that life is so uncertain for an egg or tadpole. All those eggs compensate for years when creeks dry up, or predators and disease move in and wipe them all out."

Yellowstone supervolcano's lava mystery

The currently dormant supervolcano at Yellowstone may erupt with lava flows in the future, and scientists are working to pinpoint where exactly this might happen.

Their findings may improve eruption forecasting in this vast area of volcanic unrest, the researchers said.

Supervolcanoes are capable of eruptions dwarfing anything ever recorded by humanity, spewing out thousands of times more magma and ash than even the catastrophic Krakatoa eruption of 1883.

The supervolcano that lies beneath Yellowstone National Park was responsible for the fourth-largest eruption known to science about 2 million years ago, and its activity continues to fuel the park's famous geysers. The most recent giant eruption in the area, which happened about 640,000 years ago, created the oval-shaped, 40- by 25-mile (64- by 40-kilometer) Yellowstone caldera. [ Infographic: The Geology of Yellowstone ]

There is evidence that Yellowstone might one day explode with another colossal eruption capable of covering half the United States in 3 feet (1 meter) of ash, although there are no signs of any imminent outbursts, and experts agree the odds the supervolcano will erupt in our lifetimes are vanishingly small.

Still, weaker but nevertheless dramatic eruptions could happen every several hundreds of thousands of years, potentially spewing large volumes of lava, the researchers noted.

To learn more about the future of Yellowstone, the research team analyzed some of the youngest volcanic rocks from the area, known as rhyolites, which are made of silica-rich minerals. The composition, shape and other features of crystals in these rocks could shed light on when and how they were formed, and thus on activity deep below the surface.

Their findings suggest the magma that gave rise to these rocks ascended rapidly from sources about 5 to 6 miles (8 to 10 km) below the surface. The researchers propose any volcanism at Yellowstone will probably resume at these sources, which coincide with three major faults in the area. Two of these were the focus of volcanism 70,000 to 174,000 years ago, and the other is currently the most intense source of unrest in the caldera.

"The point of this was to delineate these zones at Yellowstone that might be subject to a higher probability of future eruptions," said researcher John Stix, a volcanologist at McGill University.

It remains a very difficult question as to when Yellowstone might erupt in the future, Stix noted.

"An eruption there could happen fairly quickly, geologically speaking," Stix told OurAmazingPlanet. "I would think there would be signs beforehand, but how much time beforehand is really unknown ? is it days, weeks, months or years?"

Stix and his colleague Guillaume Girard at the University of Iowa at Iowa City detailed their findings in the September issue of the journal GSA Today.

Siohvaughn Wade Speaks On Her Child Custody Battle, Broken ...

Oh Oh! Siohvaughn is speaking out!

Although it looks as though Dwyane Wade looks like he?s living a picture perfect life, just recently snagging an NBA championship ring while dating one of the hottest actresses in Hollywood, his ex-wife Siohvaughn Wade says that his good persona is nothing but something he?s put on for the public. Last year, their nasty divorce and custody battle was played out for all to see and Siohvaughn eventually ended up losing full custody of both her sons to Dwyane Wade in the process.

Now, Siohvaughn is finally breaking her silence on ?Real Talk With Kietta,? and she says their courtroom drama is far from over. In the in-depth interview, filmed in Chicago, Siohvaughn dished on Dwyane?s? abusive childhood that left him knocking on her mother?s door at 16 asking for a place to stay, all the way to him getting drafted and her saying he changed after he got some money in his pockets. She also claims that he was still intimate with her while dating Gabrielle Union and detailed a time that he abused her while she was pregnant after she questioned him about where he disappeared to in the middle of the night.

Peep a few of the highlights from the lengthy interview and video footage below:

On Why She?s Speaking Out Right Now
Well, I believe now I?ve overcome fear.

On Meeting Dwyane
We met when we in like, the 5th grade.[...]No, I didn?t ?like? him then, but we were friends.[...] I think that I probably was 15 or 16-years-old when we actually started dating. I think he was pretty outgoing, very funny and we were friends. Although I was a female and he was a male, I was able to interact with him like one of his male friends, one of the guys. He was loving then, he was very soft-spoken, very humble at that time.

On Dwyane Wade moving in with her mom at age 16

Siohvaughn: When He finally did confide in me what was happening in his home and what happened with his mom ? he wasn?t living with her at that time ? about drug use and her being in and out of prison, the abuse was pretty bad in his house. One night it had gotten really bad and him and his sister, his younger sister, had came to my home probably at like, 3 o? clock in the morning and I opened the door and that?s when I had to tell my mom that I knew what was happening in his home and what was going on. I had to explain to her why he was coming to the door at that hour at 16-years-old. I had spoken with my mom and I had asked her is there any way he could stay with us and not have to live in that kind of environment.

Siohvaughn?s Mom: The night he came to me, he had two black garbage bags and he knocked on the door late at night. He asked me, did I mean what I said when I said that I would never let a kid be out in the street with no place to go. ?You would never let a kid go hungry and you would always help them if they needed something for school?, and I said yeah, I meant what I said. And he said, ?Mama, I?m home.? So I was like, okay.

Siohvaughn On Dwyane Getting Drafted
I was happy because it was a dream of his. His dreams had somehow became even my own, so I was very happy.[...]I saw him set a goal and I was proud of him. I was happy for him, but when I realized that we had gotten this fortune in exchange for our faith and our family, I was destroyed at that point. It started to get really bad the summer right after he?d been drafted. I was over the phone with him and he had said something to me very, very, angrily, and I had something to him about speaking to me? and being disrespectful and he told me, ?Do you wanna go and live in your mother?s house? ?Cause that?s what?s gonna happen. You?re gonna end up back living in your mother?s house.? I was very shocked. It was a very, very awful feeling. We stayed together but now that I can look back, from that moment it went downhill.

On NBA Husbands/Boyfriends Getting a Pass For Cheating
First I?d like to say that I?m not an NBA wife. I?m not an ex-wife, I?m not a basketball wife, thank God. I finally know who I am and I have my own identity but at that time I certainly was married to him and the game and the lifestyle. I do think that that?s the expectation. Absolutely. You?re seen, but you?re not heard.

On Domestic Violence in Their Relationship
I was pregnant with Zion. Shortly before being hospitalized I was in Florida and I woke up in the middle of the night because I was sick, obviously with the pregnancy. I noticed that Mr. Wade wasn?t in the house. I was calling him and calling him because it was probably like, two or three o? clock in the morning and we went to bed together which means he must have gotten up out of the bed and just left in the middle of the night without telling me. I was looking for him. I looked around the house. I was calling his phone he didn?t answer. He finally got back several hours later, it was well into the next day and I was very upset. I was asking where was he and why he [would] just leave without saying anything.

His response was at first to be verbally abusive. He was cursing, he was calling me names, he was telling me to shut the ?f? up.[...]He picked me up and held me over his head literally in midair and threw me down in our bathroom. We had an ottoman in the bathroom and he slammed me down so hard that when my back hit the otooman it broke into four pieces and my back and head hit the concrete, the marble floor, excuse me, in the bathroom. After that I got up and immediately went ? there?s a cordless phone in the bathroom, I immediately went to that phone and I was crying, I was hysterical, I went to go call the police. At that point more hell broke lose because I suppose he was in fear of being exposed because I certainly was going to call the police. I picked up the cordless phone, he snatched it out of my hand and he threw the cordless phone against my body so hard that the phone literally broke into pieces.

On Dwyane & Gabrielle Union
Separated and divorced are two different things. I?m not certain when it happened or when she happened but I know that I was very married. I know that me and Dwyane at that time had talked about reconciliation going back and forth. I was still even intimate sometimes with my then husband. So, does that constitute sleeping or having an affair with somebody?s husband? Yes. To me, divorce and separation are always two different things.

The lawsuit was about her having a negative effect on my children. That?s what that lawsuit was about. Her behavior and the things she did and said began to effect my sons, that?s when I opened my mouth and did something about it.

During the interview, Kietta also talked to Siohvaughn?s mother and her only friend about the breakdown of her marriage, the abuse to her and her children, not getting a fair chance in court and the scare tactics that were taken out against her chauffeur court driver who?s car was set on fire. Yikes!

500 jobs lost from county as Unilever shuts Ewloe IT base

UNILEVER is to quit? its plush office complex in Flintshire, axeing up to 100 jobs.

The consumer goods giant will shut down its IT headquarters in Ewloe in early 2014.

Up to 100 employees at the St David?s Park office could be made redundant.

The remaining 400 staff will be moved to a hub in Port Sunlight, Wirral.

Yesterday?s announcement confirmed proposals unveiled in June to invest ?40 million at Port Sunlight and to close four UK plants.

Unilever?s human resources director Tim Munden said: ?There are currently in the region of 500 people at our Ewloe office. Redundancies could affect in the region of 100 people.

That is the information I have but we still need to confirm it.?

He added: ?Of the 100 potential job losses these are a mixture of employees and contractors. I think about half and half.?

Talking of the staff relocations he said: ?The offices are 15 miles apart and many of the people who work in Ewloe used to work in Port Sunlight anyway.?

He said Unilever was in talks with its IT centre in Bangalore, India, over potential outsourcing of jobs from Ewloe.

Meanwhile, Unilever will sign a distribution contract with Deeside company Great Bear, which will create 50 new jobs.

The three other sites to go are in Swansea, Bridgend and Slough, where a total of 500 jobs face the axe.

The investment in the new manufacturing and IT hub at Port Sunlight will create 150 new jobs.

Chairman of Unilever UK and Ireland, Amanda Sourry, said: ?Following an extensive review, we have decided to move forward with proposals outlined in June.

?The investment into Port Sunlight will play a significant role in helping to maintain and sustain our current success and competitiveness both in the UK and on a global scale.

?We understand that many of our employees will be anxious at this time.

?That?s why we are pledging a good package of support for employees who are adversely affected.

?We will consult fully on these measures, and are committed to conducting a sensitive and thorough consultation and helping our employees to understand their options for the future.?

A 90-day consultation with all affected employees will begin on Monday.

Alyn and Deeside MP Mark Tami MP said: ?I am clearly disappointed that Unilever has decided to proceed with its reorganisation which will lead to the closure of the Ewloe site.

?I am reassured to some extent that a large number of those employees will transfer to Port Sunlight but jobs will still be lost with work going to India. The company?s commitment to open a distribution depot in Deeside is positive news and will create employment but does not offset the loss of the Ewloe site. I am in regular contact with the company to explore all options for the staff affected.?

Secretary of State for Wales David Jones said: "I understand a comprehensive package of support will be offered to those who may be affected by the redundancies, including opportunities for some employees to relocate to Port Sunlight.

?The news that around 50 new jobs will be created at Unilever's distribution centre in Deeside will also create more local opportunities in North Wales.?

Unite Wales secretary Andy Richards said: ?This news from Unilever unfortunately does not come as a surprise today but it is still disappointing and distressing for our members and other workers at the sites.

?Needless to say, any move that takes jobs and investment out of Wales is not good news, especially in the current economic climate.

?The priority now must be to ensure the best possible deal and future for those affected by today?s announcement.?

Classic Car Prices And Market Trends - Car TV Shows ? Part 3

by Mike ?

Do you ever get the feeling that there is too much hype around the buying and selling of classic cars?

The classic car auctions are getting bigger each year and it seems that they are setting new price records for many classic car models at each auction.

The big auctions are on live TV and then a few months later the same auction show is a rerun ? usually just before their next auction.

Car TV show

There is at least one car TV show, in addition to the auctions, that is dedicated to car values called ?What?s My Car Worth??.

I watch many of these TV shows and I enjoy seeing the cars and learning more about current market values.

However, doesn?t it seem that turning a car auction into TV entertainment affects the actual prices of the cars? The bidder knows he is on TV and there is a live audience cheering the bidders on as well.

Bizzarrini GT 5300 at auction

I know this from experience because I bought my Bizzarrini GT 5300 at the Russo and Steele auction in Monterey a few years ago and it was on TV.

On the other hand I had been searching for a special Bizzarrini GT 5300 for more than four years and could not find one. Most Bizzarrinis are in Europe and I live in California so the process of inspecting a car from such a long distance is difficult.

Then one day I discover that there is a terrific Bizzarrini coming up for auction practically in my back yard. So, without Russo and Steele I would probably never have found this special Bizzarrini.

It was an interesting experience bidding on a car at an auction with a TV camera in my face. I also could not see the other bidders and did not know what they looked liked until much later when I saw the TV show.

Bizzarrini GT 5300 at Russo and Steele Auction in Monterey

Bizzarrini GT 5300 at The Russo and Steele Auction In Monterey, August 2008

The other main bidder is a very nice man who lives in New York. He attended Concorso Italiano in 2010 where we spent some time talking next the the Bizzarrini we had fought over a couple of years earlier. He said that he wished he would have kept bidding. I am so glad he did not keep bidding.

Even after the auction was over the bidding continued

I was approached by Russo and Steele before I made it to the TV interview (maybe 10 minutes after the auction ended). The sales manager asked if I wanted to sell this car to ?a special customer who came to buy this Bizzarrini but was a few minutes too late?.

My response, ?after more than 4 years of searching ? this car is not for sale?.

It is a high intensity hyped up environment at one of these major classic car auctions. But what fun!

Do you wonder if you can trust classic car auction companies?

National Restaurant Association: Beverage ban is punitive to restaurant owners, and ineffective tactic to impact obesity

Concerns raised by New Yorkers ignored in final proposal

September 13, 2012
Contact: Sue Hensley (202) 331-5964, Katie Laning Niebaum (202) 973-3967

(New York, N.Y.) The National Restaurant Association says a beverage ban approved today by the NYC Board of Health unfairly targets restaurants, and is a misguided tactic to impact the obesity problem.

?There is no scientific support that this beverage ban?s size and caloric limit will impact obesity rates,? said Joy Dubost, Ph.D., R.D., Director of Nutrition and Healthy Living for the National Restaurant Association. ?It is also bewildering that the ban restricts restaurants from serving sweetened beverages in sizes larger than 16 ounces, but individuals can purchase any-sized beverage from a convenience or grocery store. This ban will punitively impact thousands of New York?s restaurant owners ? the majority of which are small businesses.?

The ban, proposed by Mayor Mike Bloomberg as an amendment to the New York City Health Code, would prohibit the sale of sugar-sweetened beverages above 16 ounces in restaurants, delis, movie theaters, stadiums, food carts and other venues throughout New York City. The ban extends to any beverage ? exclusive of milkshakes and alcoholic drinks ? with more than 25 calories per 8 ounces, including some sodas, coffees, teas, smoothies and lemonades.

The National Restaurant Association is a member of the New Yorkers for Beverage Choices coalition, which currently has more than 250,000 supporters who oppose the beverage ban and generated scores of critical comments about the proposal. Dubost, along with a multitude of others, testified at the Board?s July 24th hearing about the ban, and the Association has worked to educate policymakers and consumers on the ban?s extensive reach and harmful impact on New York City eateries.

?Apparently, even after the flood of comments and concerns raised by New Yorkers about this ban, the Board of Health chose to ignore all feedback and move forward without any significant changes to this flawed proposal,? said Dubost.

?The majority of consumers purchase their sugar-sweetened beverages from convenience and grocery stores according to data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which are excluded from the Mayor?s proposal. Instead of demonizing sugar-sweetened beverages in restaurants, there should be a focus on policies and education that will truly influence behavioral change,? said Dubost.

CDC data also indicates that sugar-sweetened beverages account for between 5-8 percent of daily caloric intake, with 50 percent of the population not consuming any sugary drinks.

The ban will also cause operational challenges for restaurant operators. Under the ban, a restaurant may not offer self-service cups above 16 ounces even if the customer intends to fill it with a sugar-free drink. The only way an operator would be able to provide such a drink to customers is through the drive-thru window where self-serve is not available.

?This proposal creates an uneven playing field from a business perspective, and produces a false sense of accomplishment in the fight against obesity,? said Scott DeFife, Executive Vice President, Policy and Government Affairs for the National Restaurant Association. ?The restaurant industry is committed to a proactive role in addressing obesity. We are disappointed in the Board?s vote today, and will continue to push for solutions that will truly impact consumer health in a positive way.?

(AP) ? Beef Products Inc. sued ABC News, Inc. for defamation Thursday over its coverage of a meat product that critics dub "pink slime," claiming the network damaged the company by misleading consumers into believing it is unhealthy and unsafe.

The Dakota Dunes, S.D.-based meat processor is seeking $1.2 billion in damages for roughly 200 "false and misleading and defamatory" statements about the product officially known as lean, finely textured beef, said Dan Webb, BPI's Chicago-based attorney.

The lawsuit filed in a South Dakota state court also names several individuals as defendants, including ABC news anchor Diane Sawyer and the Departure of Agriculture microbiologist who coined the term "pink slime."

The company's reporting "caused consumers to believe that our lean beef is not beef at all ? that it's an unhealthy pink slime, unsafe for public consumption, and that somehow it got hidden in the meat," Webb said before the company's official announcement.

ABC News, owned by The Walt Disney Co., denied BPI's claims.

"The lawsuit is without merit," Jeffrey W. Schneider, the news station's senior vice president, said in a brief statement Thursday. "We will contest it vigorously."

The 257-page lawsuit names American Broadcasting Companies, Inc., ABC News, Inc., Sawyer and ABC correspondents Jim Avila and David Kerley as defendants. It also names Gerald Zirnstein, the USDA microbiologist who named the product "pink slime," Carl Custer, a former federal food scientist, and Kit Foshee, a former BPI quality assurance manager who was interviewed by ABC.

Richard McIntire, a spokesman for the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, declined to comment and attempts to reach Foshee were unsuccessful. A phone message left the Food Integrity Campaign, a group with which Foshee has been associated, was not returned Thursday morning.

Although several news organizations used the term "pink slime," Webb said ABC was being sued for attacking the company "night after night." The "defendants engaged in a monthlong vicious, concerted disinformation campaign against BPI," the lawsuit claims, citing 11 TV 14 online reports from March 7 to April 3.

Craig Letch, BPI's director of food-quality assurance, said the company lost 80 percent of its business in 28 days. BPI has declined to discuss how much it lost in sales, but acknowledged it took a "substantial" hit. Some of the customers have returned, Letch said, but not enough to allow BPI to rehire former employees.

Webb said the reports had a "catastrophic" impact on the company, forcing it to close three of its four U.S. plants and lay off 700 workers.

ABC published a list of major grocery stores that stopped selling the product, pressuring others to follow suit by placing then on a "black list," he said.

BPI will have to prove the network intended to cause harm for the defamation lawsuit to succeed, said Patrick Garry, a media law expert at the University of South Dakota School of Law.

"The media ? regardless of your opinion of them ? don't usually print something that they know to be false," Garry said. "It may be negligent, but usually there's a malice requirement as well."

Critics worry about how the meat is processed. Bits of beef are heated and treated with a small amount of ammonia to kill bacteria, a practice that has been used for decades and meets federal food safety standards. Webb said that ABC ignored that information, instead giving the impression "that it's some type of chemical product ... some kind of repulsive, horrible, vile substance that got put into ground beef and hidden from consumers."

The name "pink slime" gained traction after The New York Times used it in a 2009 article on the safety of meat processing methods. Soon after, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver began railing against it. McDonald's and other fast food companies stopped using the product, and major supermarket chains including Kroger and Stop & Shop vowed to stop selling beef containing the low-cost product. An online petition calling for it to be banned from school menus, attracting hundreds of thousands of supporters.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has said the vast majority of states participating in its National School Lunch Program have opted to order ground beef that doesn't contain the product. Only three ? Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota ? chose to order beef that may contain it.

The uproar prompted Beef Products to suspend operations at plants in Amarillo, Texas; Garden City, Kan.; and Waterloo, Iowa. Beef Products' plants in Iowa and Kansas each produced about 350,000 pounds of lean, finely textured beef per day, while the one in Texas produced about 200,000 pounds a day.

The company has won support from the governors of Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Texas and South Dakota. U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack has also defended the product, saying the federal government wouldn't allow the product if it was unsafe.

The company has launched its own public relations offensive, including a website ? www.beefisbeef.com ? to advocate for the product.
