Health officials: Athens has spiraling HIV crisis

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Athens is seeing an alarming increase in new HIV infections, particularly among intravenous drug users, health officials warned Friday, as Greece struggles through a protracted financial crisis in which funding for health care and drug treatment programs has been slashed.

While there were about 10-14 new HIV infections per year among Athens drug users from 2008 to 2010, that number shot up to 206 new cases last year and 487 new cases by October this year ? a 15-fold and 35-fold increase, respectively, officials said.

"There is no doubt we have a big and rapidly developing epidemic in Athens," Athens University epidemiology and preventive medicine professor Angelos Hatzakis said.

A total of 1,049 new cases of HIV infection were recorded in Greece in the first 10 months of this year, including the 487 drug users. Of the others, 256 were gay men, while 108 caught the virus through heterosexual intercourse, the figures showed.

"One of the reasons is the financial crisis," European Center for Disease Prevention and Control director Marc Sprenger said. "There are more people who are vulnerable, marginalized" and who use drugs.

They turn to cheaper drugs and turn to injecting instead of smoking in order to get the same high from a smaller quantity, officials said.

"We are very concerned," Sprenger said. "What we see now is this increase, and if you don't really pay attention to this, it will become in the future a really huge burden."

Greece has been hammered by a financial crisis since late 2009 that has left the country facing a sixth year of a deep recession and with a quarter of the workforce unemployed. The country relies on international rescue loans from other European countries that also use the euro and the International Monetary Fund to stay solvent.

But in return, the Greek government has imposed several rounds of spending cuts and tax hikes in an effort to reform its economy and reduce its mountainous debt. The cuts have affected health care spending, with many hospitals reporting shortages of basic material, while charities dealing with drug users and HIV sufferers have also struggled to find funds.

One of the main methods of prevention for the spread of the virus among drug users is the distribution of free, clean needles, officials said, and Greek programs have managed to increase the number of needles they hand out from 40 to about 50-60 per addict per year. But the actual number needed in order for the programs to be effective, ECDC officials said, is about 200 for each drug user per year.

"The cost of prevention to avoid HIV infection is significantly lower than that of treating those who become infected," Sprenger said.

Affiliate Marketing On the internet Enterprise is Best Residence ...

An accident, head injury and spinal cord injury in my early twenties changed my live significantly and luckily I recovered sufficient to look at new techniques of earning an earnings. More than the past twenty plus years, I?ve had technical education as portion of rehabilitation that led to a successful career. However, the detrimental effects of the injuries worsened as I aged, top to me being unable to function even at a desk or extended amounts of time. An eight hr day and 40 hour plus week just wore me out physically and even worsened the muscle weakness from the hemi-paresis, muscle weakness on a single side that I had.

So now I was seeking at earning earnings from house in numerous methods. I first attempted selling on eBay but packing and shipping a high volume was not truly feasible for me with my physical limitations. Then there was a severe communication problem when I tried a number of network advertising companies. The occasionally slurred speech of mine ruined telephone conversations and face to face meetings definitely did not show self self-confidence or leadership skills. I also tried generating and selling digital goods but the head injury undoubtedly slowed me down and by the time I would produce ebooks, websites, and launch the product, there had been dozens of folks selling a comparable product or the suggestions were outdated.

I located selling affiliate goods was very straightforward for me, required no physical effort other than reading, a pc connection, ?one finger? typing and time. What I like very best is that the personal computer did the communication. Certain, I had to set up the ad or webpage (and there is software program for that even), but once I did the computer replicated my presentation flawlessly, thousands of instances and my affiliate marketing online enterprise was now paying me a lot more than I earned from my past total time job.

Essentially, an affiliate marketing and advertising on the internet business can be run from anywhere and I even began component time. You can of course earn a total time revenue or even become a super affiliate earning a six figure income. There is no inventory to stock in an affiliate advertising online enterprise. Having a component of me disabled from an accident, I am excited about not having to pack and ship any items. You see the merchants that I represent or refer do all the function. They even gather the payments, processing credit cards worldwide so I have no payments to collect

Client assistance is a large part of many companies and their success. Some folks have to employ help or outsource this. Nicely not me in my affiliate marketing on-line enterprise, the organizations I refer do this work too. And greatest of all, many of these organizations make payment right away. Some wait 30 days when they have funds back guarantees. But typically I get a PayPal payment correct away or a transfer into my bank account either weekly or monthly. Some people still choose checks delivered by snail mail. Well, they nevertheless do that as well.

Getting the correct details and strategy is important to your success in affiliate marketing and advertising. If you set up your ads or web site or ad or even articles as this a single, your affiliate company will run itself. Certain you may place in some time to construct a website or write some advertisements but once they go reside on the internet, you can go swimming, or as I do, just workout at the fitness center which I required for ongoing rehabilitation. If you don?t need either of these activities, then just watch the football game or spend time with pals as your affiliate income is deposited in your bank.

An crucial note is that the time spent setting these affiliate advertising sites, blogs or advertisements up does not have to be carried out at one time. Instead of two complete eight hr workdays, a half hour or hour spread out more than a couple weeks at a time is adequate. For some disabled as I, this time benefit of an affiliate advertising online business is a actual blessing?like gold.

By the way, you do not have to be disabled in any way to be have a effective affiliate enterprise!

PAULSBORO, N.J. (AP) ? Officials in New Jersey are backing away from an earlier claim that a bridge buckled and caused a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals to derail.

It's not clear whether the derailment or the partial collapse happened first over Mantua Creek in Paulsboro.

Environmental officials are sending a special vehicle to monitor air quality around the site of the derailment.

At least two tanker cars toppled into the creek causing a leak of hazardous vinyl chloride into the air Friday. High exposure levels can cause breathing problems and dizziness.

Dozens of people went to a hospital complaining of breathing problems.

The Environmental Protection Department says tests show no chemical in the air now.

The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a team to the site.

A barge with a crane is being brought in from New York City so it will be at least a day before the damaged tankers can be removed.

Deaths more common on popular heart drug: study

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - People with a common type of abnormal heart rhythm were more likely to die within several years if they had been prescribed digoxin, a drug used to help control abnormal heart rates, in a new analysis.

The research involved 4,060 people with atrial fibrillation, in which the heart's upper chambers quiver chaotically instead of contracting normally. More than two-thirds of the participants were treated with digoxin at some point either shortly before or during the 3.5-year study.

Dr. Samy Claude Elayi, from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, said digoxin - which is widely available in generic form - may benefit some people who have heart failure in addition to a heart arrhythmia.

"But in patients that have no heart failure and (have) atrial fibrillation, I think there is no reason to use this drug as a first line," added Elayi, who worked on the study.

Another cardiology researcher, however, said the new study isn't robust enough to warrant changing treatment strategies, and that earlier studies have shown digoxin is safe.

Elayi and his colleagues re-analyzed data from a past trial of people with atrial fibrillation and a high risk of stroke that were treated with a variety of drug combinations, including beta blockers and calcium channel blockers.

Over the study period, 666 people died, according to results published in the European Heart Journal.

People who had taken digoxin in the previous six months, the study team found, were 41 percent more likely to die of any cause and 61 percent more likely to die from a heart rhythm problem, in particular.

That increased risk of death was seen in people with and without heart failure, and in both men and women.

DIZZINESS, FAINTING

Digoxin works by helping to stabilize the upper heart chambers affected by atrial fibrillation, Elayi said - but it can also cause problems by creating a bad rhythm in the heart's lower chambers. That can lead to dizziness, fainting and heart palpitations.

The researchers noted that they didn't have data on what dose of digoxin people were prescribed - or how closely they stuck to those prescriptions.

Because the trial wasn't originally intended to measure the negative effects of digoxin, and people weren't assigned randomly to one arm or the other, the analysis also can't prove that digoxin caused the extra deaths.

Dr. Ali Ahmed, who has studied digoxin at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, called that a major limitation of the new study.

He said an earlier randomized controlled trial - considered the gold standard of medical research - did not find more deaths among people with heart failure taking digoxin. Other research, Ahmed added, has suggested that low doses of the drug can actually lower the risk of death among some patients.

An analysis like this one can't fully account for the likelihood that sicker patients are prescribed certain drugs more often, he said.

"When you do non-randomized studies, you always wonder, was it really digoxin or was it the other confounders" such as patients' chronic diseases, that led to more deaths.

"This should be taken with extreme caution, because of the potential for confounding and bias from a variety of sources," Ahmed, who wasn't involved in the new research, told Reuters Health.

"The fundamental thing is you cannot overrule the findings of a randomized controlled trial with non-randomized data."

'NOT A KILLER'

Digoxin can be bought for about $10 for a month's supply. It's been used worldwide for decades to help control heart rate, the researchers said.

Elayi said the findings don't mean that people with heart failure and atrial fibrillation shouldn't be taking the drug.

But based on his team's study, he said he would recommend other heart medications before digoxin for people without heart failure. However, if an atrial fibrillation patient also has very low blood pressure - which makes drugs such as beta blockers and calcium blockers unsafe - digoxin might be a reasonable second choice, he added.

In that case, doctors should prescribe digoxin at low doses and keep a close watch on the amount of the drug in patients' blood, Elayi told Reuters Health.

In addition, he said, "From the patient perspective, if doctors put them on the drug they should check their rationale for that."

But according to Ahmed, patients and doctors shouldn't worry about taking or prescribing the drug because of this study. Digoxin, he said, "is not a killer."

Scientists discover water ice on Mercury: Ice and organic material may have been carried to the planet by passing comets

ScienceDaily (Nov. 29, 2012) ? Mercury, the smallest and innermost planet in our solar system, revolves around the sun in a mere 88 days, making a tight orbit that keeps the planet incredibly toasty. Surface temperatures on Mercury can reach a blistering 800 degrees Fahrenheit -- hot enough to liquefy lead.

Now researchers from NASA, MIT, the University of California at Los Angeles and elsewhere have discovered evidence that the scorching planet may harbor pockets of water ice, along with organic material, in several permanently shadowed craters near Mercury's north pole.

The surprising discovery suggests to scientists that both ice and organic material, such as carbon, may have been deposited on Mercury's surface by impacts from comets or asteroids. Over time, this volatile material could then have migrated to the planet's poles.

"We thought the most exciting finding could be that this really was water ice," says Maria Zuber, the E.A. Griswold Professor of Geophysics in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences, and a member of the research team. "But the identification of darker, insulating material that may indicate complex organics makes the story even more thrilling."

Zuber and her colleagues published their results this week in the journal Science.

Mounting evidence for ice

The possibility that water ice might exist on Mercury is not new: In the 1990s, radar observations detected bright regions near Mercury's poles that scientists believed could be signs of either water ice or a rough planetary surface. However, the evidence was inconclusive for either scenario.

To get a clearer picture of Mercury's polar regions, Zuber and her colleagues analyzed observations taken by NASA's MESSENGER (MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging) mission, a probe that has been orbiting the planet and mapping its topography since April 2011.

Mapping the planet's surface is a challenging task, as the craft must weather the sun's intense radiation, which can "play havoc with electronics," Zuber says. What's more, the probe moves from pole to pole in an elliptical orbit, making for an extremely tricky mapping mission, both dynamically and thermally. Despite these challenges, MESSENGER's onboard laser altimeter has amassed more than 10 laser pulses that have been used to map topography and measure the near-infrared reflectance of the surface.

Last year, researchers analyzed the probe's topographic observations and created a high-resolution map of Mercury; they then overlaid previous radar observations. They found that the bright regions detected in radar lined up with permanently shadowed craters at the planet's north pole -- regions that never see the sun, and which are potentially ideal places for ice to survive. This finding was one more piece of evidence that Mercury might harbor water ice.

Revealing shadows

In this latest analysis of MESSENGER's observations, scientists believe they have found conclusive evidence for water ice on Mercury, although the data was at first puzzling.

The team found that the probe's reflectance measurements, taken via laser altimetry, matched up well with previously mapped radar-bright regions in Mercury's high northern latitudes. Two craters in particular were bright, both in radar and at laser wavelengths, indicating the possible presence of reflective ice. However, just south of these craters, others appeared dark with laser altimetry, but bright in radar.

The observations "threw us off track for a long time," Zuber says, until another team member, David Paige of UCLA, developed a thermal model of the planet. Using MESSENGER observations of Mercury's topography, reflectance and rotational characteristics, the model simulated the sun's illumination of the planet, enabling precise determination of Mercury's temperature at and below the surface.

Results indicated that the unusually bright deposits corresponded to regions where water ice was stable at the surface; in dark regions, ice was stable within a meter of the surface. The dark insulating material is consistent with complex organics that would already be dark but may have been darkened further by the intense radiation at Mercury's surface.

In addition, MESSENGER's neutron spectrometer detected elemental hydrogen in the vicinity of Mercury's north pole. The combination of the compositional, spectral and geometric observations and the thermal models provided a strong, self-consistent explanation for the unusual radar backscatter observations.

Paul Lucey, a professor of geophysics and planetology at the University of Hawaii, points out that MESSENGER has also revealed a number of regions where surfaces were much darker than in previous radar measurements. Lucey interprets these results as possible evidence of receding ice on Mercury's surface.

"This suggests that in the past, ice was more extensive on Mercury, and retreated to its current state," says Lucey, who was not involved in the research. "Even Mercury experiences global warming."

MESSENGER will continue to orbit Mercury, and Zuber says future data may reveal information beyond the planet's surface. "There are still some really good questions to answer about the interior," Zuber says. "I'll tell you, we're not done."

What Stocks Albert Einstein Would Invest in Today - The Market Oracle

Peak Price Not 'Peak Oil', Free 26 Page Report

Companies

Alexander Green writes: Albert Einstein wasn?t famous as an investor. He was a genius who revolutionized theoretical physics. But if he were alive today, it?s pretty clear what he would be doing with his money. And you should be doing it, too.

Let me explain?

It?s a truism that when times are good, investors tend to forget about risk and focus on opportunity. When times are bad, investors tend to forget about opportunity and focus on risk.

This is exactly the opposite of what they should be doing, of course.

But today you have a great opportunity to both limit risk and generate superb returns in your stock portfolio with ? stifle that yawn ? stodgy, old dividend-paying stocks. These investments aren?t nearly as boring as you may think. And in the decade ahead, their returns are likely to be outstanding.

The Basics of Dividend-Paying Stocks

Let?s start with the basics. Dividend yields are a company?s annualized payment divided by its share price. When share prices fall ? as many have over the last month ? yields rise.

It still astonishes me that investors are willing to lend money to the U.S. Treasury for the next 10 years at less than 2%. What a terrible bet, one that virtually guarantees a negative, real (i.e. after inflation) return over the next decade.

A far better bet is a diversified portfolio of dividend-paying stocks. Understand that, over the long run, stock market performance is tied to economic growth. And ? news flash ? the growth outlook in the developed world today isn?t exactly torrid.

Understand furthermore that over the eight decades through 2010, dividends contributed 44% of the stock market?s return, according to Fidelity Investments. Sometimes it was much more. During the 1970s, for example, dividends generated 71% of returns.

Dividend stocks today represent an unusual opportunity. U.S. corporations are sitting on $2 trillion in cash, a record amount. More S&P 500 companies have initiated or raised dividends this year through August than during the same period in any of the last seven years. And there?s plenty of room for more increases. Payments are less than one third of profits, a historic low.

If you?re a growth-oriented investor, you probably don?t think much about dividends. You?re interested in doubling or tripling your money. And with a bit of patience, you can.

The Historical Returns of Dividend-Paying Stocks

Analysts often talk about the lost decade, how stocks have essentially returned nothing since the market highs in the spring of 2000. But the story has been very different with dividend-paying stocks.

Over the past decade ? with dividends reinvested:

  • Oil producer Chevron Corp. (NYSE: CVX) has returned 200%.
  • Altria Group (NYSE: MO), the U.S. tobacco giant, has returned more than 300%.
  • Even musty old Con Edison (NYSE: ED) ? a utility that was born 23 years before Thomas Edison ? has returned 130% over the period.

Today there are plenty of blue-chip stocks with decent (and growing) dividends attached. Consider Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ), Procter & Gamble (NYSE: PG), Exxon Mobil (NYSE: XOM), AT&T (NYSE: T), Merck (NYSE: MRK), or Verizon (NYSE: VZ).

Or, for a more-diversified approach, plunk for a few shares of PowerShares Dividend Achievers Portfolio (NYSE: PFM), the Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF (NYSE: VYM), or the WisdomTree Total Dividend Fund (NYSE: DTD).

Dividend stocks alone won?t generate a mouth-watering return. But dividends will rise over time ? and surprising things happen when you reinvest them. Picture a snowball rolling downhill.

Albert Einstein understood this. As he observed, money compounding ?is the most powerful force in the universe.?

Good Investing,

Alex

PFT: Mystery man Harbaugh stays mum on QB

Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia EaglesGetty Images

Todd Bowles might not be able to fix the Eagles defense, but at least give him credit for accurately analyzing the situation.

The Eagles replacement coordinator described last night?s numerous coverage busts as ?a messed-up situation,? as succinct and accurate a description as possible.

Of course, that?s also another way of saying it?s the players? fault and not his own, but that?s beside the point.

?The first one was high school cover-3,? Bowles said, via Sheil Kapadia of Phillymag.com. ?The ball was thrown down the middle of the field. We gave up a touchdown. Inexcusable. The second one was inexcusable too.?

Of course, the all-alone touchdown to Panthers tight end Gary Barnidge was just one of the problems, as free receivers were running downfield all night.

?The second long one was a bust,? Bowles said. ?It was inexcusable. Shouldn?t have happened. Everybody knew where they were supposed to be. They weren?t there.?

Asked why it was happening, Bowles replied: ?I wish I could tell you.

?They can?t happen. Not at this level, not at this stage of the game, not after what we?ve been through. And everybody has to own up to their responsibility.?

Of course, bad players poorly coached is one possible explanation.

In the five games since Bowles went from secondary coach to coordinator (after Juan Castillo was offered up), the results have been ridiculous.

The Eagles have allowed 75.2 percent completions, for 9.7 yards per attempt, with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions. Castillo?s defense led the league in opponents? completion percentage (52.3).

The entire Eagles organization has reached the ?what good?s it going to do? stage, and players said wholesale changes aren?t going to fix it.

?You stick with those people or those groups and you coach them harder,? cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha said. ?And those players obviously have to take it more ? I don?t want to say seriously because they?re taking it seriously ? but obviously have to be mentally focused a little bit more than they have been.

Fox interview ends after author criticizes network

(AP) ? A Fox News Channel interview ended abruptly Monday after an author accused the network of hyping the killing of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya, and "operating as a wing of the Republican Party."

The charges were made by Thomas Ricks, a veteran newspaper reporter and author of "The Generals," who was brought on for an interview with anchor Jon Scott about GOP criticism of U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice's comments about the attacks.

Ricks said he thought the story of the Benghazi attacks was "hyped, by this network especially."

Scott asked why Ricks would call it hype when four Americans were killed, including the first U.S. ambassador in more than 30 years.

Ricks responded that few people knew how many U.S. security contractors were killed in Iraq and compared that to the attention paid to "what was essentially a small firefight" in Libya.

"I think that the emphasis on Benghazi has been extremely political, partly because Fox was operating as a wing of the Republican Party," Ricks said.

With that, Scott thanked him and turned to a co-anchor, who introduced a commercial.

"When Mr. Ricks ignored the anchor's question, it became clear that his goal was to bring attention to himself and his book," Fox News executive Michael Clemente said.

MUMBAI (Reuters) - GlaxoSmithKline Plc plans to buy up to an additional 31.8 percent stake in its Indian consumer products arm GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Ltd for 52.2 billion rupees ($939 million), sending shares of the Indian unit to a record high.

GlaxoSmithKline plans to raise its stake in GSK Consumer Healthcare to 75 percent from 43.2 percent, paying 3,900 rupees per share through an open offer, it said in a statement. The price represents a premium of 28 percent to the stock's Friday close.

The offer period is expected to begin in January 2013.

"This transaction represents a further step in GSK's strategy to invest in the world's fastest growing markets and, we believe, offers a liquidity opportunity at an attractive premium for existing shareholders," said David Redfern, chief strategy officer at GlaxoSmithKline.

Shares in GSK Consumer Healthcare were locked at 3,659.20 rupees, up 20 percent, their maximum daily trading limit, while the Mumbai market was up 0.23 percent, by 10.47 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Euro zone to seek Greek aid deal without write-off

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Euro zone finance ministers and the International Monetary Fund began their third attempt in as many weeks to release emergency aid for Greece on Monday, with policymakers saying a write-down of Greek debt is off the table for now.

Greek Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras voiced confidence the ministers would finally reach a deal after Greece had fulfilled it's part of the deal by enacting tough austerity measures and economic reforms.

"I'm certain we will find a mutually beneficial solution today," he said on arrival for what was set to be another marathon meeting.

Greece, where the euro zone's debt crisis erupted in late 2009, is the currency area's most heavily indebted country, despite a big "haircut" this year on privately-held bonds. Its economy has shrunk by nearly 25 percent in five years.

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Olli Rehn said it was vital to disburse the next 31 billion euro tranche of aid "to end the uncertainty that is still hanging over Greece". He urged all sides to "go the last centimeter because we are so close to an agreement".

Greece had met international lenders' conditions and "Now it is delivery time for the Eurogroup and the IMF," Rehn said.

Negotiations have been stalled over how Greece's debt, forecast to peak at almost 190 percent of gross domestic product next year, can be cut to a more sustainable 120 percent by 2020.

Without agreement on how to reduce the debt, the IMF has held up payments to Athens because there is no guarantee of when the need for emergency financing will end.

The key question is: Can Greek debt become sustainable without the euro zone writing off some of the loans to Athens?

IMF Managing Director Christine Lagarde said on arrival that the solution must be "credible for Greece". The IMF argues that the debt can only be made manageable if euro zone governments forgive some of their loans to Athens, but Germany and its northern European allies have so far rejected any such idea.

DEBT RELIEF "NOT ON TABLE"

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble told reporters on arrival that a debt cut was legally impossible, not just in Germany but for other euro zone countries, if it was linked to a new guarantee of loans.

"You cannot guarantee something if you're cutting debt at the same time," he said. That might not preclude debt relief at a later stage if Greece has completed its adjustment program and no longer needs new loans.

The German banking association (BDB) said a fresh "haircut" or forced reduction in the value of Greek sovereign debt, must only happen as a last resort.

Two European Central Bank policymakers, vice-president Vitor Constancio and executive board member Joerg Asmussen, said debt forgiveness was not on the agenda for now.

"It has been clearly stated. It is not on the table. Everything else is just rumors," Constancio told reporters in Berlin.

Asmussen told Germany's Bild newspaper the package of measures would include a substantial reduction of interest rates on loans to Greece and a debt buy-back by Greece, funded by loans from a euro zone rescue fund.

So far, the options under consideration include reducing interest on already extended bilateral loans to Greece from the current 150 basis points above financing costs.

How much lower is not yet decided -- France and Italy would like to reduce the rate to 30 basis points (bps), while Germany and some other countries insist on a 90 bps margin.

Another option, which could cut Greek debt by almost 17 percent of GDP, is to defer interest payments on loans to Greece from the EFSF, a temporary bailout fund, by 10 years.

The European Central Bank could forego profits on its Greek bond portfolio, bought at a deep discount, cutting the debt pile by a further 4.6 percent by 2020, a document prepared for the ministers' talks last week showed.

Not all euro zone central banks are willing to forego their profits, however, the German Bundesbank among them.

Greece could also buy back its privately-held bonds on the market at a deep discount, with gains from the operation depending on the scope and price.

But the preparatory document from last week said that the 120 percent target could not be reached in 2020, only two years later, unless ministers accept losses on their loans to Athens, provide additional financing or force private creditors into selling Greek debt at a discount.

The latest analysis for the ministers showed the debt could come down to 125 percent of GDP in 2020, one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

FORGIVING OFFICIAL LOANS?

To cut the debt more boldly, the IMF wants the euro zone to forgive Greece some of the official loans, in what is called Official Sector Involvement (OSI) in EU jargon.

"OSI is at the core of the problems with reaching a deal," one euro zone official with insight into the talks said.

German central bank governor Jens Weidmann has suggested that Greece could "earn" a reduction in debt it owes to euro zone governments in a few years if it diligently implements all the agreed reforms. The European Commission backs that view.

An opinion poll published on Monday showed Greece's anti-bailout SYRIZA party with a four-percent lead over the Conservatives who won election in June, adding to uncertainty over the future of reforms.

German paper Welt am Sonntag said on Sunday that euro zone ministers were considering a write-down of official loans for Greece from 2015, but gave no sources, and a euro zone official said such an option was never seriously discussed.

French Finance Minister Pierre Moscovici said on Sunday that euro zone ministers made big progress to reach a common position during at a conference call on Saturday in preparation for their talks with the IMF on Monday.

"We are very close to a solution," he said.

Moscovici mentioned the reduction of interest on bilateral loans, foregoing ECB profits on Greek bonds and the debt buy-back as the options that would need to be applied for a deal as well as additional financing for Athens to keep it funded until 2016, rather than only until 2014.

Are you up to the task?

A Christian Science perspective.

By Katherine Stephen / November 26, 2012

Do you ever feel you lack the talents needed to pursue a desired goal? Or unsure you have the ability to accomplish a challenging work assignment?

' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

In such situations, is there anything to do to rise to the occasion and make the most of your talents?

The study of Christian Science has helped me understand how to trust God as the source of all ability and talent. God, divine Mind, provides the qualities needed to accomplish the tasks we?re called upon to do. The Bible says, ?Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above? (James 1:17).

Christ Jesus? parable of ?the talents? (see Matthew 25:14-30) illustrates how important it is to develop and use the abilities and gifts that have been divinely bestowed on us. According to ?The Interpreter?s Bible,? the modern use of the word ?talent? is derived from that parable (see Vol. VII, p. 559). Mary Baker Eddy, the author of the Christian Science textbook, ?Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures,? also believed that it?s essential for each individual to make the most of his or her God-given abilities. She wrote, ?The talents He gives we must improve? (p. 6).

How can we best do this? I?ve found that a good place to start is to turn away from a personal sense of ego and intelligence. Mrs. Eddy recognized the human tendency to rely on this sense of ego and ability that is necessarily limited. She wrote: ?Mortals are egotists. They believe themselves to be independent workers, personal authors, and even privileged originators of something which Deity would not or could not create? (p. 263).

The spiritual approach to talent and ability is radically different. The Bible tells us that Jesus himself turned to God as the source of his ability. ?I can of mine own self do nothing,? he said (John 5:30). And, on another occasion, he said, ?[T]he Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works? (John 14:10).

If I?m facing a difficult task, I?ve found that being willing to humbly acknowledge God as the source of ability enables me to become receptive to the outpouring of God?s ideas. The more we divest our thought of hindering, limiting traits and beliefs, such as egotism, the more we become like a clear, transparent window through which God?s qualities can shine forth.

Christian Science reveals that each of God?s sons and daughters has the divine capacity to do this ? to reflect intelligence, insight, intuition, originality, and all the God-given qualities needed in any situation where talent is required.

I can think of many instances when I?ve felt the need to turn to God for the intelligence and capacity to fulfill a project or assignment. There have been times when I didn?t know where needed ideas would come from, and I didn?t feel adequate to the task at hand. But I?ve found that willingness to acknowledge God as the source of my ability, to quiet thought to listen to the ideas that are coming from Him, and to move forward step by step with humility and trust, provides the needed ability. Then it?s important to give credit where credit is due: to thank and praise God for what He has done.

Eddy described what is possible for the individual who is willing to turn to God as the source of ability: ?A knowledge of the Science of being develops the latent abilities and possibilities of man. It extends the atmosphere of thought, giving mortals access to broader and higher realms. It raises the thinker into his native air of insight and perspicacity? (Science and Health, p. 128).

The ultimate talent and ability we all have is that of healing and helping others. Jesus exemplified this ability to the utmost, and it is available to all who are willing to cultivate the spiritual qualities necessary to exercise it. God blesses this endeavor as He does the expression of all God-given ability. It is God?s will that each of us achieve the promise He has bestowed upon us: to express the divine nature and intelligence by bringing our talents and abilities to fruition.

Writing The Wrongs: Speaking Truth to Hamas

The remarkably courageous Ramallah-born Mosab Hassan Yousef, the eldest son of Hamas cofounder Sheikh Hassan Yousef and a former Hamas activist himself, served time on several occasions in Israeli prison. Yousef is also known as "the Green Prince,"?the code name assigned him by the Shin Bet (Israeli security agency), with whom he later collaborated for a decade to thwart numerous terrorist attacks during the second intifada, sparing hundreds of Israeli lives.?

Now living in the U.S., two years ago Yousef published Son of Hamas: A Gripping Account of Terror, Betrayal, Political Intrigue and Unthinkable Choices. The book elaborated his rejection of Hamas' inherent jihadist violence, his personal forsaking of Islam and conversion to Christianity, and his decision to assist Israel clandestinely for approximately a decade starting in 1996.

In the aftermath of Israel's eight-day Operation Pillar of Defense response to Hamas' latest rocket jihad, brought to a temporary hiatus via a cease-fire, Mosab Hassan Yousef opined about Israel's actions, the contrasting behaviors of the Hamas regime, and why the latter should be dismantled:

Israel helps the Palestinian people more than anyone else: every day it provides electricity and even the salaries paid to employees come from banks in Israel. There is also humanitarian aid that enters Gaza.

I want to say to the members of the organization, including my father, who are listening to this interview -- brave people do not hide behind children and fire missiles. If they had even a bit of courage -- they would be able to leave Gaza instead of hiding like rats.

I have trouble believing that Hamas will be able to one day build a modern state. I hope their lies will be exposed to the Palestinian public."

This [the dismantling of the Hamas regime] is necessary, but we have to work very hard for it. This is necessary not only for Israel -- but for the benefit of humanity. Hamas was born to destroy. It cannot build.

Tips On Landscaping In A Wetter Climate - Las Vegas Landscape

by admin on Saturday, November 24th, 2012 | Comments Off

Everyone dreams of a beautiful yard that is the envy of the neighborhood, yet not that many people understand how to do it. Once you are properly educated, landscaping becomes a lot easier. This article provides good ideas so you can make a beautiful landscape like you dreamed you?d have.

"Subscribe to the blog"

Receive an update straight to your inbox every time we publish a new article. Your email address will never be shared

Create yards that can maintain themselves and prevent weeds from growing. The right design should include weed prevention in the form of attractive, ground-covering plants. Make sure your yard?s plants and flowers are healthy and densely packed. If weeds are not able to get sunlight or the nutrients they need, they won?t be able to grow. For the best results, water consistently and fertilize regularly.

TIP! Time your purchases to save money. Purchase lumber in the wintertime.

Before starting, talk to a professional. Even when creating a landscaping project yourself, it is always best to speak with someone who has this type of experience. Since they have more experience, they can give you advice on what not to do. Professionals can also help even the most experienced landscaper to avoid making mistakes.

There is more to landscaping than just plants. It?s easy to narrow your focus to the plants you?re going to add when planning a landscape. It is important to think about using non-organic elements as well. Large landscaping rocks are a good feature to add. One advantage of non-living landscape features is that they are around year-round, even when the other plants aren?t in bloom.

Prior to making any landscaping changes, have a look at your entire home and yard. Sketch a drawing of your land and house and see what fits in around the property to help you visualize your project better.

TIP! A great way to accent your flower beds is to use ornamental grass. Tall grasses, such as purple fountain grass, can add color, texture and a nice visual break to your flower beds.

Edging can be great for a yard generally, but een as you continue landscaping, use edging to keep everything looking professional. The best place to do some edging is at the point where the grass and mulch meet. This is an important place to focus your maintenance efforts.

Anytime you are considering changing your landscape, you must also thing about the structures that already stand on your property. Consider where sprinklers, cables and air conditioners are placed so landscaping doesn?t affect them. You should always call your utility company before you dig, to avoid a costly or dangerous mistake.

If you want to improve your landscaping, but are low on cash, you might want to look into neighborhood cost sharing. What this entails, is that you and your neighbors can pitch in money and share tools, such as clippers and lawnmowers. Once the community has purchased tools and equipment, you can work out a schedule to determine who gets to use the tools each day.

Native Plants

Try using native plants for landscaping. When planning out your landscape, try to include flowers, trees, and shrubs that are native to your local area. Native plants thrive even in the poorest soils and they could also survive in extreme weather conditions.

Having good relations with your neighbors is important, but one advantage of landscaping is an ability to privatize your property. You can define your space with a fence, or a border created from trees or shrubs. When you combine living landscape elements with non-living, the possibilities are almost endless.

TIP! Plan a yard and garden that will continue to be beautiful throughout the year. This means you should have different plants that will blossom throughout the spring and the summer, and perhaps some pine trees to keep your yard green during the winter months.

Choose native plants for your yard. It is easier to take care of native plants since they can thrive with the normal conditions in your area. This means you won?t have to spend so much time maintaining the plants in your yard. If you want information about local plants, visit any home improvement center or nursery for advice.

Now that you have finished this article, you are no doubt aware that the landscape of your dreams is a real possibility. Keep in mind what you?ve just learned, and put it into practice. The neighbors will be talking about your fantastic new yard in no time.

If you enjoyed reading the article above written by one of our guest blog writers and are considering landscaping services for your home and live in Las Vegas, NV we?ll be happy to be of service to you! You can contact us here.

Researchers Investigating Self-Boosting Vaccines

An anonymous reader writes "Vaccines, contrary to opinions from the anti-science crowd, are some of the most effective tools in modern medicine. For some diseases, a single shot is all it takes for lifetime immunity. Others, though, require booster shots, to remind your immune system exactly what it should prepare to fight. Failure to get these shots threatens an individual's health, and the herd immunity concept as well. Scientists are now looking into 'self-boosting' vaccines in order to fix that problem. Some viruses are capable of remaining in the body for a person's entire lifetime. If researchers can figure out a way to safely harness these, it may be possible to add genes that would create proteins to train the immune system against not just one, but multiple other viruses (abstract). This is a difficult problem to solve; changing the way we do vaccinations will itself have consequences for herd immunity. It also hinges on finding a virus that can survive the immune system without having uncomfortable flare-ups from time to time."

NHL Lockout 2012: Regular-Season Games Canceled Through Dec. 14, All-Star Game

-- More than a third of the NHL regular season and two of its marquee events have now been called off.

The league announced its latest round of cancellations on Friday ? Day 69 of its labor lockout. All games through Dec. 14 were wiped out, and this time All-Star Weekend, scheduled for Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio, was lost, too. The New Year's Day outdoor Winter Classic already was scratched.

NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly said losing the All-Star festivities is "extremely disappointing."

"We feel badly for NHL fans and particularly those in Columbus, and we intend to work closely with the Blue Jackets organization to return the NHL All-Star events to Columbus and their fans as quickly as possible," Daly said in a statement Friday.

The Blue Jackets said fans holding tickets to the game, the skills competition, and other events during that weekend could receive refunds.

Brian Jack, a 35-year-old IT director who grew up in Pittsburgh, moved to Columbus 17 years ago and converted from a Penguins fan to a Blue Jackets supporter after the expansion team hit the ice.

"We knew the All-Star Game, the longer it went, was probably going to be one of the first special events they cancelled," said Jack, a season-ticket holder for all of the Blue Jackets' 12 seasons.

"You knew it was coming, but I hoped that they would get together and fix it (labor problems) up. For season-ticket holders who have watched the Blue Jackets struggle for a number of years with the product on the ice, the All-Star game was supposed to be a bright spot. Now that's gone."

A lockout in the 1994-95 season shortened that campaign to 48 games. A similar scenario could play out this time if the sides can find some common ground. Or the whole season could be lost, as it was in 2004-05.

The new cancellations come as little surprise. Owners and players had an unproductive negotiating session on Wednesday that produced no movement to break an impasse over splitting more than $3 billion in revenue and also player contracts.

"All players felt that this week would lead to something," Detroit Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall wrote in an email to The Associated Press. "However as of today unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. It's very disappointing."

Daly said he spoke to union officials on Friday, advising them about the cancellations, but at this point no face-to-face talks are scheduled. The possibility exists that Daly will speak to union special counsel Steve Fehr by telephone this weekend, but even that isn't certain.

The sides had stayed apart for eight days before reconvening on Monday night and then again on Wednesday when the union presented a comprehensive proposal the NHL requested. Players' association executive director Donald Fehr said Wednesday that the sides were closer financially than the NHL has claimed. The further cancellations Friday will cause significantly greater losses for the league.

"On Wednesday, the players presented a comprehensive proposal, once again moving in the owners' direction in order to get the game back on the ice," Donald Fehr said in a new statement. "The gap that remains on the core economic issues is $182 million. On Wednesday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said that the league is losing $18-20 million per day during the lockout, therefore two more weeks of cancelled games far exceeds the current economic gap.

"It makes the NHL's announcement of further game cancellations, including the 2013 All-Star Weekend, all the more unnecessary, and disappointing for all hockey fans ? especially those in Columbus. The players remain ready to negotiate but we require a willing negotiating partner."

The union made its offer that was based on a framework the NHL had given, which included a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue and a $393 million in deferred payments for the players, who earned 57 percent of revenues in the collective bargaining agreement that expired in September. The NHL offered only $211 million to the players in a proposed deal that took into account that a full 82-game schedule would be played this season.

Players previously had proposed they receive a guaranteed amount of income each year.

Management wants a seven-year deal, which the union says is too long because fewer than half the current players will be active by the last season.
