(AP) ? Wisconsin played Tuesday night like it always does ? defended everything, made big shots and limited the turnovers.

Indiana looked like anything but its usual self.

It was just another chapter in a series filled with strange twists.

Ryan Evans scored 13 points, Traevon Jackson added 11 and the unranked Badgers moved into sole possession of the Big Ten lead with a 64-59 upset at No. 2 Indiana.

"We're feeling good about ourselves right now," Badgers forward Jared Berggren said. "It shows we can beat anyone, anywhere, anytime; so I think it shows what we're capable of."

Especially if the Badgers (13-4, 4-0) keep playing this way.

Wisconsin has won seven straight and has beaten two top-15 teams in four days. It is the last unbeaten team in Big Ten play.

All the Badgers needed to do against Indiana was hold the nation's highest-scoring team to its fewest points of the season, its worst shooting performance of the season and end its 18-game home winning streak.

Mission accomplished.

Wisconsin became the first team to win 11 straight in a series with Indiana since the Badgers last did it in 1919, and the first team to win five straight in Bloomington since Purdue last did that in 1923. No team has ever won six straight on Indiana's home court and only Purdue, from 1908-14, has won 12 in a row against the Hoosiers.

The Badgers just stuck to the game plan.

"We knew that if they got it going in transition they can score in bunches. All you have to do is look at their game films," Bo Ryan said, acknowledging he coached with flu-like symptoms. "Our goal was not to let that happen, but saying it and doing it, having it as a plan, are two different things. It just so happened to work tonight."

Indiana (15-2, 3-1) felt ill for another reason.

The Hoosiers scored only three fast-break points and watched the Badgers toss in shot-clock beating 3-pointers. Indiana came into the game averaging a Big Ten-leading 17 assists per game, yet managed only seven against the Badgers.

And instead of pressuring Wisconsin into miscues, the Badgers committed just eight turnovers.

Cody Zeller, who made all eight of his shots and had 18 points in the first half, finished with 23 points and 10 rebounds and made only one basket in the second half. Christian Watford had 11 points, and Victor Oladipo had 10.

"That's their style of play. We just didn't defend the dribble well enough, didn't make enough shots," Zeller said. "That's what it boils down to."

The Badgers followed the script perfectly. They limited the mistakes, took advantage of seemingly every opportunity they got, especially in the second half as Hoosiers fans moaned and groaned about everything from missed shots to errant passes.

Indiana rallied late in the first half to take a 32-31 halftime lead, then opened the second half with a three-point play to make it 35-31. The home crowd figured it was going to be the start of a big run.

Instead, Wisconsin gave up only six points over the next 6:34, a drought that allowed Wisconsin to retake a 38-37 lead with a 7-0 run. A few minutes later, the Badgers were off on a 9-0 spurt that ended when Mike Bruesewitz's 3 beat the shot-clock buzzer to make it 47-39. It was 51-41 before the Hoosiers finally cranked up the pressure.

"When you get momentum going, it's amazing what can happen," coach Tom Crean said. "They played really hard and they got the momentum."

Indiana looked like it had swung the momentum back in its direction when it scored four straight and after Evans made 1 of 2 free throws, they answered with a 6-0 spurt ? the final basket a 3-pointer from Yogi Ferrell that cut the lead to 52-51 with 4:40 to go.

But that was as close as Indiana got.

Ben Brust made a 17-foot jumper and the Badgers closed it out with a game-ending 12-8 run.

"If you just play the game and have the right attitude about it, you make good things happen," Ryan said. "Players have to play."

Doctors say that men receiving hormone therapy with testosterone have reported relief of some of the symptoms associated with so-called male menopause. Because men do not go through a well-defined period referred to as menopause, some doctors refer to this problem as androgen (testosterone) decline in the aging male -- or what some people call low testosterone. Men do experience a decline in the production of the male hormone testosterone with aging, but this also occurs with conditions such as diabetes.

News outlets improperly used photos posted to Twitter: U.S. judge

NEW YORK?-?

A U.S. judge has found that two news organizations improperly used images that a photojournalist had posted to Twitter in one of the first big tests of intellectual property law involving social media.

Agence France-Presse and The Washington Post infringed on the copyrights of photographer Daniel Morel in using pictures he took in the aftermath of the Haiti earthquake in January 2010, U.S. District Judge Alison Nathan in Manhattan ruled.

While AFP had argued that once the pictures appeared on Twitter they were freely available, the judge said that Twitter?s terms of service did not give the news agency a license to publish the images without Morel?s permission.

The judge, in a decision released late Monday, partially granted Morel?s summary judgment motion but also limited damages he could potentially recover. Several other issues in the case were left to be decided at trial. A trial date has not been set.

The case has garnered wide interest because it is one of the first to address how images that users make available to the public through social media can be used by third parties for commercial purposes.

Though this case began in 2010, ownership of content on social media continues to be a hot-button issue. Last month, Facebook Inc?s photo sharing site, Instagram, became the subject of public outcry after users interpreted changes in its terms of service to mean Instagram could sell their pictures without permission. Within days, Instagram backed away from some of the planned changes.

TERMS OF SERVICE

In the Morel case, the photographer put the Haiti images on Twitter, and they were then disseminated widely after an AFP editor discovered them through another Twitter user?s account, according to the ruling.

AFP distributed several of the pictures to Getty Images, the ruling said. The Washington Post, a Getty client, published four of the images on its website, according to the ruling.

Getty is part of the litigation but the judge did not make any determination on the photographer?s allegations of copyright infringement against it, noting that there were other issues yet to be resolved.

AFP had argued that Twitter?s terms of service granted it the right to use Morel?s images.

The judge, though, said that while the service terms do allow the reposting and rebroadcasting of users? images in certain circumstances, such as ?retweeting? them, it does not grant a license for commercial use.

Attorneys for AFP were not immediately available for comment. The Washington Post, a unit of The Washington Post Co , and Getty also did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Joseph Baio, a partner at Willkie, Farr & Gallagher who represents Morel, said the ruling proves that images taken from Twitter without permission cannot be used for commercial purposes and that the trial will determine the consequences for doing so.

Twitter was not a party in the case. ?As has always been our policy, Twitter users own their photos,? a Twitter spokesman said.

In the ruling, Nathan narrowed what Morel can recover from AFP and Getty for distributing the images.

While Morel had requested what the court said would amount to ?tens or hundreds of millions of dollars? in statutory damages based on awards for each subscriber that used the images, the judge said AFP and Getty would only be liable, at most, for a single statutory damage award per image infringed.

AFP initiated the lawsuit in March 2010 to get a ruling that it wasn?t infringing on copyrights after Morel had accused AFP of improper use of his pictures. Morel countersued AFP, Getty and The Washington Post.

The judge refused to grant Morel?s motion for summary judgment on whether AFP, Getty and The Washington Post acted willfully, as well as whether the media companies violated Morel?s rights under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. The act prohibits providing or distributing false copyright information in order to conceal copyright infringement.

The case is Agence France Presse v. Morel, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 10-02730.

MILAN (AP) ? A Milan court on Monday rejected a bid by former Premier Silvio Berlusconi to halt his sex-for-hire trial because of Italy's general election campaign, a ruling that means a verdict could come before the February vote.

Berlusconi's lawyers also decided not to call the Moroccan woman at the center of the case, Karima el-Mahroug, to testify, saying her testimony would have "interfered with the serenity of the electoral campaign."

But they asked to hear from six more witnesses instead, including actor George Clooney, who has said he visited the premier's residence once.

El-Mahroug, better known as Ruby, had appeared in court on Monday ready to testify after having failed to show on two previous dates, purportedly because she was in Mexico on vacation.

Berlusconi is accused of paying for sex with the 20-year-old when she was 17 during his notorious "bunga bunga" parties ? racy soirees at his villas in which dozens of young women were present ? and then using his office to cover it up. Both deny sexual contact.

Berlusconi has apologized for hosting the parties, saying he was lonely after splitting from his second wife. Veronica Laria left him in 2009, citing alleged dalliances with young women.

Berlusconi attorney Niccolo Ghedini had filed a motion to suspend the proceeding, citing the demands of Italy's election campaign. The prosecution opposed the request, arguing that Berlusconi was neither the formal head of his party nor its official candidate for premier, and that he has infrequently shown up for trail anyway, as is his right.

In their ruling, the judges said Berlusconi's absences for a political campaign were a personal choice and couldn't be compared with having a parliamentary obligation ? which has been accepted as a legitimate reason to delay a trial.

Ghedini said that in allowing the trial to go ahead, it was clear the court wanted to see a verdict before the Feb. 24-25 election.

"It doesn't bother us at all. It should bother the citizens because it is obvious that this will impact the electoral campaign," he told reporters.

Berlusconi has long accused Milan magistrates of mounting politically inspired cases against him ? a charge they deny.

Prosecutors had already said they didn't need el-Mahroug's court testimony, explaining they had what they needed from other evidence already submitted. The defense had put her on its witness list, but Ghedini on Monday declined to call her.

"We would have preferred to hear her in the trial, but it is unthinkable to do something like this when the election campaign is in full swing," he said. "Our renunciation is a bitter renunciation."

El-Mahroug's lawyer, Paola Boccardi, said her client wasn't angry that she didn't have to testify, just "surprised that she wasn't heard."

Ghedini, however, said he wanted to call six other witnesses on his witness list who hadn't yet been heard from, including Clooney and el-Mahroug's mother.

Clooney has said he was approached by Berlusconi's team to testify about the "bunga bunga" parties, but says he only visited the premier's residence once to seek aid for Darfur and declined an invitation to stay.

The court is expected to decide Monday on the request to hear from the additional witnesses.

El-Mahroug looked relaxed, chatting with her lawyer while in court. She wore a dark parka with fur trim, Ugg boots and carried a fashionable Louis Vuitton handbag.

Baidu Invests in Kingsoft, Moves Into Web Security, Qihoo's CEO ...

If anyone had any doubt there was bad blood between Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) and Qihoo 360, here?s some more evidence to convince you: after its recent move into security software in Southeast Asia, Baidu is looking to take on Qihoo 360 on its home turf with an investment in Qihoo security rival Kingsoft. According to some reports, Tencent is even involved in the deal, which will see the companies partnering up to launch a security suite that will compete directly with Qihoo?s line of products.

Qihoo CEO Zhou Hongyi is, unsurprisingly, not particularly happy about this. In an interview with Sina Tech, he said of the Baidu-Kingsoft partnership:

We wish that Baidu would compete with Qihoo directly. Two big monopolies joining hands to create a pawn in order to monopolize [the security market], all in the name of breaking [Qihoo's] monopoly?that?s the biggest joke on the Chinese internet.

It?s understandable that Zhou would be upset. Qihoo stock (NASDAQ:QIHU) dropped six points on the news of the Baidu-Kingsoft investment, and it has recovered only slightly since then. But Zhou may yet get a shot at revenge; rumor has it that Qihoo is working on a potential partnership with Google. And so the war rages on?

A disconnect between violence and television

(AP) ? If there's any soul-searching among top television executives about onscreen violence contributing to real-life tragedies like the Connecticut school shooting, it isn't readily apparent.

All say the horrors of Newtown and Aurora, Colo., rocked them. But during a series of meetings with reporters here over the last 10 days, none offered concrete examples of how it is changing what they put on the air, or if that is necessary.

"I'm not a psychologist, so I'm not sure you can make the leap (that) a show about serial killers has caused the sort of problems with violence in our country," said Robert Greenblatt, who put "Dexter" on the air when he ran Showtime and is now overseeing development of a series on the notorious creep Hannibal Lecter for NBC. "There are many, many other factors, from mental illness to guns."

All of those points are being considered by Vice President Joe Biden as he prepares to make recommendations Tuesday to President Obama on ways to curb violence. When entertainment executives met with Biden in Washington on Friday, makers of blood-spurting video games like "Call of Duty" and "Mortal Kombat" dominated attention. In theaters, "Texas Chainsaw 3-D" dominated box office receipts during its first week.

Television's biggest influence is its omnipresence; the average American watches more than four hours of TV a day.

In recent days, only FX President John Landgraf said he was in favor of further study about any correlation between entertainment and real violence. Previous studies have been mixed.

Landgraf has sons aged 15, 12 and 9 and said he doesn't let them play video games in which the player is shooting.

Everything the entertainment industry does should be fair game in a discussion about violence, he said. But he pointed out that the zombie series "Walking Dead" and brutally violent "Sons of Anarchy" are both very popular in England and that country has far fewer gun murders than the United States. The availability of powerful assault weapons and ammunition are most responsible for the difference, he said.

The Newtown shooting was heartbreaking, said Paul Lee, ABC entertainment president. "We welcome the conversation as to how we as a culture can make sure that we don't let these events happen again," he said.

He said ABC has strong standards for what it broadcasts, stronger than its competitors.

"We talk about it all the time," he said. "We are storytellers. We have to tell stories that are vibrant and passionate, but we want to make sure that the stories that we tell are done with integrity, you know, there's no gratuitous action that goes out there, that it's driven through the stories and the characters, and that we have a moral compass in what we do."

The appetite for "Walking Dead" and "Texas Chainsaw 3-D" among young viewers is not lost on any TV executive, and bottom line pressure speaks most loudly to them. Broadcast networks feel a particular need to push the envelope when they see cable programs making noise with an ability to show more explicit scenes.

The same week that Lee talked about ABC's standards, the network's hit "Scandal" had a scene depicting waterboarding.

Fox has a highly anticipated series due later this month, "The Following," about a serial killer who recruits deadly disciples, and its gruesome scenes include a woman who commits suicide by gouging her eye and piercing her skull with an ice pick, and a man set on fire at a coffee stand.

Kevin Reilly, Fox entertainment chairman, said that given all of the media choices, the impact on real life is a broad and complex conversation. "It trivializes it to try and link it to television, or broadcast television in particular," he said.

"Part of entertainment, part of what we do on television, is to provide escapism," Reilly said. "Escapism comes in many forms. It could be laughter. It could be fantasy. It is also your worst nightmare come to life. And it makes our palms sweat and it moves us emotionally and puts us on the edge of the seat. We are engrossed in it and we forget ourselves for an hour."

When a network is putting a thriller on the air, it has to be able to compete on an intensity level, he said.

Being publicly questioned about the level of violence on the air clearly annoyed Reilly, however. Asked if Fox had made any changes to the promotion or content of "The Following" after the Newtown school shooting last month, he snapped, "No," and said he wouldn't address any more questions on the topic.

He was wrong, by the way: Fox later said it had replaced a billboard showing a woman with an ice pick with an image of series star Kevin Bacon, and combed its on-air promos to make sure there was no gunplay.

Reilly wasn't alone in his impatience. CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler also called a halt to questions on the topic Saturday after being asked several. Tassler was unhappy with NBC's Greenblatt, who said that CBS' "Criminal Minds" was worse than "Dexter" ever was in terms of content. She said it was a mistake to allow the discussion "devolve into my show versus your show."

CBS is on pace to be the nation's most-watched television network for the 10th time in 11 years, and has done so with a huge fictional body count. The network's prime-time schedule is dominated by procedurals that usually involve solving violent crimes. Tassler said CBS would begin promoting on the Super Bowl a summer series based on a Stephen King book about a town trapped under an invisible dome, the promo clip shown to reporters included drawings of body parts dropping from the sky, a pacemaker bursting out of a man's chest and a bloody hammer being cleaned in a sink.

NBC illustrated a similar disconnect. As its executives said NBC wasn't a "shoot 'em up" network, a highlight reel of "Revolution" was shown that that included a swordfight, a standoff between two men with guns, a gunfight and a building blown up with a body flying through the air.

Tassler said CBS will show "awareness and sensitivity" as it moves the process of making pilots and selecting series that will run on the network in coming years.

"Nothing that is on the air is inappropriate," she said. "And our attention is always to continue to be a broadcaster that creates content for a vast, diverse audience."

There are many different means of promoting your organization online, but one of the most effective remains the e-mail campaign.

Weighing Your Alternatives

For messages, you have three choices of computer software, each with distinct benefits and drawbacks. You are able to be your own personal machine and install software on your desktop. It is possible to install software on the internet server youre using. Or it is possible to join an ASP managed service.

The obvious good thing about a hosted machine is that getting your e-mails shipped can be your hosts concern. Says Dr. Ralph Wilson, of Wilson Internet Services, With computer or web server software, basically youre responsible to have them delivered Whereas if youre paying somebody else for that company, its their job, and lots of them go on it very seriously. A managed machine starts with a monthly payment for 500 or 1,000 emails and as your email database increases the purchase price creates.

With desktop server application, the greatest benefit could be the cost. You are able to pay a one-time fee for a desktop machine and run it forever. Renting a web server is also relatively cheap.

Beating the Blockers

If you use desktop or server based application, there are a few basic guidelines you can follow to help your messages ensure it is to your visitors inboxes.

1. Avoid symptoms of spam. A number of features that trigger spam filters. Your deliverability can be increased by you by avoiding certain problems in your issue lines:

Dont use all caps.

Dont use HTML messages which can be primarily design.

Dont try to trick filters by replacing characters with asterisks or breaking words up with punctuation marks. Filters are getting wiser, and you could find yourself on a black list.

Dont use careless HTML.

Dont use large or small fonts. Stick to H1, H2, or H3 heading tags.

2. Consider sender accreditation

Bonded sender businesses as and have connections with internet service providers. Reliable organizations may proceed through these companies to obtain secure passage past spam filters. Theres an expense with this service, but its an ideal way to make certain your emails are getting delivered.

What to Try to find in a Hosted Server

There are always a quantity of things you should ask before joining:, if you choose to use a managed service

What steps do they take to prevent spammers from enrolling? An excellent host company may have measures in place, such as for example proved opt-in, to make sure that theyre not allowing spammers to become listed on.

Do they give transformation monitoring? Similar to an ad monitoring program, many published servers now let you see how many of your e-mail users clicked right through to your website, how many click-throughs triggered revenue, and how much money you made from your strategy.

What kind of customer care do they supply? The answer can be often told by you to that question by simply just how long it will take them to respond to your inquiries. Ask if they charge extra for the company and if full phone support is offered by them.

Nevertheless you decide to increase your business, dont overlook the power of email marketing to increase your customer base and improve your sales volume. remove frames

Turkey says France must solve Kurdish killings

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) ? Turkey's prime minister has called on France to immediately shed light on the slayings of three Kurdish rebel activists in Paris.

Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday also criticized French President Francois Hollande ? who has said he knew one of the women ? saying he should explain "to the world" why he had met with "terrorists" wanted by Turkey.

The three, including the founding member of the autonomy-seeking Kurdish rebel group, the PKK, were found shot dead on Thursday at a time when their jailed leader is holding peace talks with Turkey.

Turkey and its allies have labeled the group a terrorist organization. But Turkey frequently accuses France and other European nations of failing to cooperate against the rebel group.

More money, time needed to remove Concordia wreck

The cruise ship Costa Concordia, leaning on its side, is seen just off the coast of the Tuscan island of Giglio, Italy, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2013. As if the nightmares, flashbacks and anxiety weren't enough, passengers who survived the terrifying grounding and capsizing of the Costa Concordia off Tuscany have come in for a rude shock as they mark the first anniversary of the disaster on Sunday. Ship owner Costa Crociere SpA, the Italian unit of Miami-based Carnival Corp., sent several passengers a letter telling them they weren't welcome at the official anniversary ceremonies on the island of Giglio where the hulking ship still rests. Costa says the day is focused on the families of the 32 people who died Jan. 13, 2012, not the 4,200 passengers and crew who survived. (AP Photo/Paolo Santalucia)

GIGLIO, Italy (AP) ? More time and money will be needed to remove the Costa Concordia cruise ship from the rocks off Tuscany where it capsized last year, in part to ensure the toxic materials still trapped inside don't leak into the marine sanctuary when it is righted, officials said Saturday.

As shipwreck survivors and relatives of the 32 killed began arriving on the island of Giglio to mark Sunday's anniversary of the grounding, environmental and salvage experts gave an update on the unprecedented removal project under way.

They stressed the massive size of the ship ? 112,000 tons ? its precarious perch on the rocks off Giglio's port and the environmental concerns at play in explaining the delays and problems in rolling the ship off its side and towing it intact from its resting place.

The pristine waters surrounding Giglio are part of a protected marine sanctuary for dolphins, porpoises and whales, and are a favorite for scuba divers. Already, tourism was off 28 percent last year, thanks in part to the eyesore in Giglio's port.

Franco Gabrielli, the head of Italy's civil protection agency, told reporters that officials are now looking at September as the probable date to remove the ship, taking into account conservative estimates for poor weather and rough seas. Originally, officials had said they hoped to tow it from Giglio's waters by early 2013.

In addition, Gabriele and Costa officials said the cost might now reach ?400 million ($530 million), up from the ?300 million ($400 million) originally estimated.

The Concordia slammed into a reef off Giglio on Jan. 13, 2012, after the captain took it off course in a stunt to bring it closer to the island. As it took on water through the 70-meter (230-foot) gash in its hull, the Concordia rolled onto its side and came to rest on the rocks off Giglio's port. Thirty-two people were killed.

The captain, Francesco Schettino, remains under house arrest, accused of multiple manslaughter, causing a shipwreck and leaving the ship before all passengers were evacuated. He hasn't been charged. Schettino maintains he saved lives by bringing the ship closer to shore and claims the reef wasn't on his nautical charts.

Relatives of the dead and survivors began flocking to Giglio on Saturday ahead of Sunday's daylong commemoration to honor the 32 victims, those who rescued them and the residents of Giglio who opened their doors to the 4,200 passengers and crew who survived.

"Just seeing this boat has a powerful effect on me," said Albert Karianis, a 60-year-old cleaner from Marseille, France, who survived the shipwreck and returned Saturday to the island for the first time.

"I think about it every day, and I have nightmares," he said.

Hilaire Blemand, the father of victim Michael Blemand, said he came back to honor his son and take part in the commemoration Mass for the victims.

"You always have a feeling of apprehension when you return to where it all started, and when you see that the ship is still there, it is still just as painful," he said.

Also arriving on Giglio on Saturday was Capt. Gregorio De Falco of the Italian coast guard in Livorno, who became something of a hero to survivors after his recorded conversations with Schettino during the evacuation were made public. In the conversations, De Falco excoriates Schettino for having abandoned the ship before all passengers were off and orders him to return, shouting the now-infamous order "Go on board (expletive)!"

De Falco told RAI state television he wanted to go to Giglio to "embrace the victims, and the relatives of the victims." De Falco, who has shied from all media attention since the disaster, said he did so because he didn't want the "notoriety."

"I don't want notoriety for this tragedy. I have always avoided it."

While groups of survivors were arriving on the island ? some on specially organized ferries ? others received a letter from Costa urging them to stay away, saying there wasn't room for them and that the commemoration was for families of those who died. Those who received the letter speculated that Costa simply didn't want disgruntled passengers speaking to the media.

Nevertheless, some such passengers were on hand.

Violet Morra, a 65-year-old from Marseille, said she had rejected Costa's initial settlement offer of ?11,000 euros per passenger, offered in the immediate aftermath of the grounding. Many survivors rejected the offer and are pursuing legal action against the company and its Miami-based parent company Carnival Corp., the world's largest cruise line.

Passengers recounted a harrowing and chaotic evacuation, with crew members giving contradictory instructions and the captain delaying the evacuation order for a full hour after impact. By the time he gave the order, the ship was at such a tilt that many lifeboats couldn't be lowered.

"It meant that our lives were only worth ?11,000, just ?11,000 euro for our lives," Morra said. "We are still facing psychological problems, and so we have rejected it."

Costa attorney Marco De Luca said the compensation procedures are going ahead "at a satisfactory pace." He said almost two-thirds of the passengers took Costa's compensation offer.

Costa is fighting legal efforts, particularly those in the United States, where damage awards are likely to be higher than in Italy. Costa is challenging the jurisdiction of U.S. courts to hear the cases, arguing among other things that in buying their cruise tickets, passengers entered into a contract with Costa that selects the courts of Genoa, Italy, as the exclusive forum for any claims against the company.

The plan to roll the Costa off its side and remove it from its resting place involves constructing an underwater platform and attaching empty cisterns on the exposed side of the ship. The cisterns will be filled with water, and cranes attached to the platform will be used to rotate the ship and pull it upright. Once upright, the ship will have cisterns attached to the other side. All the cisterns will be emptied of water and filled with air to help float the ship and free it from the seabed. Once it's properly afloat, it can then be towed to a nearby seaport for demolition.

Salvage crews successfully removed some 2,100 tons of fuel last year from the ship's tanks without any major spill. But Maria Sargentini, president of the environmental oversight group for the Concordia, said sewage, remaining fuel and tons of rotten food remain inside.

"Sure, there are still some risks," she said Saturday. "Especially during the rollover and floating operations, there could be some leaking."

Times Closes Environment Desk on Same Day 'Extreme Weather' Hits Front Page

Talk about mixed signals. On the very morning? The New York Times?signaled its plans to?reassign its nine environment desk journalists?to other sections, the paper ran a chilling photo of "extreme weather" above the fold on A1.?

RELATED: How Obama Lost Climate Change

No one got fired, but Times?managing editor?Dean Baquet tells InsideClimate New's Katherine Bagley that the dedicated environment desk will fold over the next few weeks. "We have not lost any desire for environmental coverage," Baquet assures, saying that environment stories will be embedded in business, national, and local coverage. "This is purely a structural matter." There's no word yet on the fate of the Green blog, which has been edited from the environment desk.?

RELATED: Why Americans Stopped Believing in Global Warming

Lots of environmentalists and science?reporters?weren't happy about the news.?The?Guardian's?US deputy editor Staurt Millar was one of the many critics who noticed a symbolic disconnect between the paper's announcement and its current front page, teasing a story about extreme weather becoming the new normal in countries around the world.?

On day NYT closes environment desk, it runs this on front page - extreme weather becoming more frequent and intense nyti.ms/Wxl23H

? Stuart Millar (@stuartmillar159) January 11, 2013

But others thought this might be a good move for the paper's environment coverage, freeing up reporters and better integrating coverage with the rest of the paper. Quartz science reporter Christropher Mims thought the move could take climate coverage out of isolation, and?Scientific American blog editor Bora Zivkovic agreed.?

Topic/beat that is ghettoed in its own newspaper section is easily recycled without reading... mix it up! Throw it at unsuspecting readers.

? Bora Zivkovic (@BoraZ) January 11, 2013

Environment reporting in general has been declining in recent years. But the Times has been running more environment stories than any other newspaper,?according to a recent study by the?Center for Science & Technology Policy Research. On Wednesday, the?Times?ran a?provocative?map above the front-page fold, alonside the news that 2012 saw the hottest U.S. temperature average on record.

A spellbinding parable of love and romance unfolds.

(PRWEB) January 12, 2013

From the mesmerizing cityscapes of London to the scintillating streets of Lisbon, this novel by Rafic Daud, will take readers on a quest to unlock one of the greatest mysteries of the heart.

Jan Demir is a young, ambitious partner at LCI, Inc., an investment-planning firm that he helped found. His stellar reputation shines beyond Portugal and his rapid rise to success is matched only by his philandering and jet-set lifestyle. But Jan?s world and life will soon take an unexpected turn when his business partner and mentor, Pascoal, sends him to Tehran, Iraq, for a business deal.

The negotiations go smoothly but the last thing on Jan?s mind is to meet the girl of his dreams- the beautiful Golnaz. Attraction becomes inevitable and the two fall madly in love, turning their lives upside down. Jan uses his old charms to win Golnaz only to find out that she is unlike any other girl he has met before. Despite their differences and many obstacles that present themselves, Jan knows that the two of them are meant to be. Will love really transcend boundaries? Will he succeed in winning her heart? Or will he only push her away? Readers will discover the answers in this modern parable of love and romance.

Real Estate Watch ? Two Homes Hit The Brookland Market This ...

by Shani on January 12, 2013

It has been pretty slow on the real estate front around here lately. I?m guessing most people aren?t interested in buying or selling their home around the holidays. But things are starting to pick up again, and here are two fine homes that just hit the market to that effect.

Check out this amazing Bauhaus style home at 3201 15th St. NE, ?listed for $649,000. I just love the modern style, especially the staircase, kitchen and the large?pumpkin?orange accent wall. The listing says that the home is owned and renovated by an architect, and it?definitely?shows. The home has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms and will be having open houses both today and tomorrow. (Incidentally, ?this home is in a pocket of Brookland, around 15th and Jackson Streets, NE ?that is seeing some pricey renovations. You may recall this large beautifully renovated home near there that sold in September for $685,000.)

This home, at 1437 Irving St. NE has that classic huge Brookland back yard. On the market for $679,000, it boasts 6 bedrooms and 3.5 baths. If you are a fan of open floor plans, this home is right up your alley. I love the hardwoods throughout and the dark cabinets with the light granite in the kitchen. Really though, what I am digging the most are these huge french door that open?the dining area to the back yard. This home was built for entertaining. There will be an open house tomorrow.

Miami Hurricanes hire former FIU football coach Mario Cristobal

Mario Cristobal didn?t have to go far for his next job.

Cristobal, 42, has returned to his roots. The Miami native who was fired last month as head football coach at FIU, will be the University of Miami?s new tight ends coach, UM confirmed Thursday afternoon.

Cristobal also has been designated the associate head coach.

?I?m really, really happy to see Mario come back to the U,? former UM coach Jimmy Johnson, who coached Cristobal as a freshman, told The Miami Herald by phone. ?It?ll pay all kinds of dividends for Miami.??

Defensive coordinator Mark D?Onofrio, who coached with Cristobal when they were both assistants at Rutgers, remains Assistant Head Coach.

Brennan Carroll, who has been the tight ends coach at UM, will shift to wide receivers coach and according to the UM release, ?take a larger role in the passing game.?

Cristobal was an offensive tackle at UM from 1988 through 1992 under Johnson and Dennis Erickson, and won two national titles. He coached at UM as a graduate assistant from 1998 through 2000, then as an assistant from 2004 through 2006 ? guiding tight ends in 2004 and ?05, then offensive linemen in ?06.

Former coach Johnson said he first met Cristobal in his Miami home when he was recruiting his older brother Luis ? a guard at UM. ?Not only will he help the coaching and enthusiasm,?? Johnson said of Cristobal, ?he?ll be an outstanding recruiter as well.

?He?ll do a great job. I?m really happy [coach] Al [Golden] got him.?

Also thrilled to hear the news: former UM right guard Martin Bibla, who had Cristobal as a graduate assistant coach and was part of the Canes? last national championship team in 2001.

?That?s outstanding,?? said Bibla, now a state trooper in Pennsylvania. ?He?s a phenomenal guy. I?d go to bat for him no matter what. Art Kehoe was my coach, but if I couldn?t get a hold of Art I had total confidence in Mario. He?s a wealth of knowledge.??

Bibla said Cristobal goes out of his way to help players progress.

?He?ll bend over backwards to help players better themselves,?? Bibla said. ?He puts a different spin on things. It seems like he?s up on coaching techniques and whatever you?re doing that?s relevant to the game.

?He evolves with the game.

?If I was 17 again and trying to find a college to play ball at, I?d look at him as a good father figure. And if I was the father, I?d trust him to cultivate my son into not only a good football player but an outstanding person.??

Another national-title winner who had Cristobal as a graduate assistant: former right tackle Joaquin Gonzalez, who played for the Cleveland Browns and Indianapolis Colts. He said Cristobal helped define his career.

?I was shocked when FIU let him go,?? said Gonzalez, who heads sales for his family?s tire business. ?It will be hard to find anybody that is filled with more passion to win. He?s ready to rock ?n roll. That?s why he?s so good at recruiting.

?If Mario has to drive 18 straight hours to talk to a recruit, you bet your [behind] he?ll do it. He won?t wait for the plane. His intensity to work and be a winner is second to none. ?If you?re a lazy person, he?s not for you.??

After graduating from Miami Columbus High, Cristobal went on to receive his degree in business administration in 1993, and then his master?s degree in 2001. He is married to Jessica and has two young sons.

Cristobal led FIU to its only two bowl games, including the Panthers? first bowl appearance in 2010, a victory against Toledo in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl. The Panthers won the 2010 Sun Belt Conference title, and Cristobal was named the Sun Belt Coach of the Year.

He was dismissed from FIU on Dec. 5 after coaching there for six seasons. He finished 3-9 with the Panthers in 2012 and 27-47 overall.

Cristobal is replacing former UM wide receivers coach George McDonald, who left UM for the same position at Arkansas.

In other UM news, former Hurricanes defensive tackle Kareem Brown, who graduated from Miami Norland High, will be the new graduate assistant coach on the defensive line, a source confirmed. Brown lettered at UM from 2003 through ?06.

Zorb ride in Russian mountains proves deadly

MOSCOW (AP) ? It was supposed to be a thrilling ride down a ski slope inside a giant inflatable ball that is to be one of the symbols of next year's Winter Olympics; it ended in tragedy for the two Russian men inside.

The transparent plastic ball ? known as a zorb ? veered off course and sailed over a rock ledge in the rugged Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia. The ball picked up speed as it flew down the steep slope, rolling and bouncing. One man was killed and the other badly injured.

The man who died, 27-year-old Denis Burakov, was with friends at the Dombai ski resort, where they frequently went snowboarding, on Jan. 3 when he decided to take a ride in a zorb being operated next to a beginners' slope. His friend Vladimir Shcherbakov joined him.

An eight-minute video taken on Burakov's phone by one of his friends shows the two men being fitted into harnesses inside the zorb, which consists of two polyurethane balls with a layer of air between them. The zorb is then released to roll down the hill, the two men spinning inside.

But the zorb bounces off of the intended path, and a man waiting for it at the bottom of the hill tries in vain to catch the ball before it pops over a rocky ledge and disappears down a gorge below Mount Mussa-Achitara.

The person filming the video is heard swearing and asking "What's down there?" The answer from someone off camera: "It's a catastrophe down there."

The Emergencies Ministry said both men were ejected from the zorb as it tumbled and they landed on the snow about 10 meters (30 feet) apart after having rolled about 1.5 kilometers (a mile). Still conscious and able to stand, they were rescued by two skiers, who then pulled both men up to the top of the hill. Burakov suffered serious spinal injuries and died on the way to the hospital. Shcherbakov suffered a concussion and other injuries and remains hospitalized.

The accident prompted the emergencies minister to demand on Wednesday that Russia address its lax enforcement of safety rules for winter sports, citing a series of accidents over the January holidays. Vladimir Puchkov said during a televised meeting with officials in charge of rescue services across the country that they should take extra measures to ensure safety, in particular at Russia's ski slopes.

Sergei Loginov, deputy director of Z-orb.ru, the largest supplier of zorbs in Russia, said the zorbing run that killed Burakov was in violation of all safety rules. Zorbing requires a groomed gentle slope with fences on both sides of the track and a secure spot at the bottom where the ball can be safely brought to rest, he said, but none of this was present at Dombai.

"It's not even irresponsibility. It's an experiment on life," Loginov said. "It's all or nothing. They either survive or they don't."

The sport of zorbing originated in the 1990s in New Zealand and is now done around the world, most often on grassy slopes. Loginov said there are several zorbing spots on the outskirts of Moscow and dozens more around the country.

Zorbs have been adopted as a symbol of the 2014 Winter Olympics, which Russia is holding in Sochi.

"The transparency of zorbs also reflect the open, accessible and inclusive society that Sochi 2014 Games is helping to build," Dmitry Chernyshenko, head of the organizing committee, said in 2010.

Sochi's modern ski resorts also are in the Caucasus Mountains. Dombai and other less-developed resorts are located to the east in the North Caucasus region, a patchwork of mainly Muslim republics suffering from poverty and unrest stemming from an Islamic insurgency.

"Until 2006, hundreds of people died every year at the North Caucasus ski resorts," said Kantemir Davydov, an Emergencies Ministry spokesman in southern Russia. "That number has fallen sharply, but still on average 20 to 30 tourists die every year. The causes of the deaths are various, but the root is the same: There is no clear system assuring tourism safety."

Eager for any business that brings in badly needed tourist revenue, local officials are reluctant to enforce safety requirements, Davydov said.

Federal investigators said they were inspecting the Dombai resort and attempting to determine who was responsible for the fatal zorb ride.

Russian state television suggested that one reason winter sports in Russia so often take lives is that people too often ignore basic safety rules. Its report showed families sledding on a slope near Moscow that was clearly marked "no sledding" and said six people had been hospitalized Tuesday with injuries, including concussions and broken bones.

In Italy, a snowmobile driven by a Russian citizen crashed into a ravine during a nighttime outing on a steep ski slope last week, killing six Russians being pulled behind the vehicle on a sled. Italian police arrested the driver on Wednesday.
