Mirren, Rylance up for London's Olivier awards

LONDON (AP) ? Helen Mirren is a favorite to reign at London's Olivier theater awards Sunday for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in "The Audience."

Mirren is a best-actress nominee for the awards, the British equivalent of Broadway's Tonys.

She stars in Peter Morgan's play about the private weekly meetings between the monarch and Britain's prime ministers over the six decades of her reign. Mirren is no stranger to royalty ? she won an Academy award in 2007 for the same role in "The Queen."

She's up against Hattie Morahan for "A Doll's House," Billie Piper for "The Effect" and Kristin Scott Thomas for "Old Times."

Male acting nominees are Rupert Everett for Oscar Wilde drama "The Judas Kiss"; James McAvoy for "Macbeth"; Mark Rylance for a cross-dressing turn in "Twelfth Night"; Rafe Spall for the relationship drama "Constellations"; and Luke Treadaway for "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time."

The National Theatre's acclaimed production of "Curious Incident" ? based on Mark Haddon's novel about a mystery-solving boy with Asperger's syndrome ? leads the race with eight nominations, while the jaunty musical "Top Hat" has seven.

Nominees for musicals include Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton for "Sweeney Todd," Alex Bourne and Hannah Waddingham for "Kiss Me, Kate" and Heather Headley for "The Bodyguard."

Two political dramas ?"The Audience" and rough-and-tumble Parliamentary saga "This House" ? are up for best new play, alongside the love story "Constellations" and "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time."

The best new musical nominees are the geeks-made-good story "Loserville"; the Tina Turner tribute "Soul Sister"; the movie-inspired "The Bodyguard"; and the high-stepping "Top Hat."

Winners in most categories are chosen by a panel of theater professionals and members of the public. Nominees for the Audience Award, decided by public vote, are "Billy Elliot"; "Matilda: The Musical"; "The Phantom of the Opera"; and "Wicked."

The winners will be announced during a ceremony at the Royal Opera House in London hosted by stage star Sheridan Smith and "Downton Abbey" actor Hugh Bonneville.

Owner arrested as Bangladesh building toll reaches 372

By Ruma Paul and Serajul Quadir

DHAKA (Reuters) - The owner of a factory building that collapsed in Bangladesh killing hundreds of garment workers was arrested on Sunday trying to flee to India, police said, as fears grew that the death toll could rise sharply with as many as 900 still missing.

Mohammed Sohel Rana, a leader of the ruling Awami League's youth front, was arrested by the elite Rapid Action Battalion in the Bangladesh border town of Benapole, Dhaka District Police Chief Habibur Rahman told Reuters.

Speaking near the site of the wreckage of Rana Plaza, which housed several factories making low-cost garments for Western retailers, junior minister for local government Jahangir Kabir Nanak told reporters that Rana would be brought to Dhaka by helicopter.

Authorities put the latest death toll at 372, four days after the country's worst-ever industrial accident.

Four people were pulled out alive on Sunday and rescuers were working frantically to save several others trapped under the mound of broken concrete and metal, fire services deputy director Mizanur Rahman said.

"The chances of finding people alive are dimming, so we have to step up our rescue operation to save any valuable life we can," said Major General Chowdhury Hassan Sohrawardi, coordinator of the operation at the site.

About 2,500 people have been rescued from the wrecked building in the commercial suburb of Savar, about 30 km (20 miles) from the capital, Dhaka.

Officials said the eight-storey complex had been built on spongy ground without the correct permits, and more than 3,000 workers - mainly young women - entered the building on Wednesday morning despite warnings that it was structurally unsafe.

Police said one factory owner gave himself up following the detention of two plant bosses and two engineers the day before.

Local news reports said the mother of building owner Rana, who was not being held, died of a heart attack on Saturday evening.

Anger over the disaster has sparked days of protests and clashes, with police using tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets to quell demonstrators who set cars ablaze. On Sunday, however, the roads were quiet.

The main opposition, joining forces with an alliance of leftist parties which is part of the ruling coalition, called for a national strike on May 2 in protest over the incident.

BUILT ON A FILLED-IN POND

Wednesday's collapse was the third major industrial incident in five months in Bangladesh, the second-largest exporter of garments in the world behind China. In November, a fire at the Tazreen Fashion factory in a suburb of Dhaka killed 112 people.

Such incidents have raised serious questions about worker safety and low wages, and could taint the reputation of the poor South Asian country, which relies on garments for 80 percent of its exports. The industry employs about 3.6 million people, most of them women, some of whom earn as little as $38 a month.

Emdadul Islam, chief engineer of the state-run Capital Development Authority (CDA), said on Friday that the owner of the building had not received the proper construction consent, obtaining a permit for a five-storey building from the local municipality, which did not have the authority to grant it.

Furthermore, another three storeys had been added illegally, he said. "Savar is not an industrial zone, and for that reason no factory can be housed in Rana Plaza," Islam told Reuters.

Islam said the building had been erected on the site of a pond filled in with sand and earth, weakening the foundations.

Since the disaster, the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has asked factory owners to produce building designs by July in a bid to improve safety.

PHOENIX (AP) - Patrick Corbin's success has come from a simple formula - be aggressive and throw strike one.

The Diamondbacks' left-hander allowed two runs over 6 2-3 innings and Arizona beat the Colorado Rockies 4-2 on Sunday. It was the Diamondbacks' fifth win in six games.

"I thought today I was as sharp as I've been," said the 23-year-old. "I got a couple of fastballs up and that hurt me a little bit but I was able to keep us in it."

Corbin (3-0) scattered nine hits - four coming in his final 1 2-3 innings - and struck out five. Corbin didn't walk a batter for the second straight outing and hasn't allowed a base on balls in his last 15 innings.

"When you're getting ahead with that first pitch, the second pitch you can throw whatever you want," Corbin said. "It makes it 100 times easier."

Corbin became the second Diamondbacks pitcher to throw at least six innings and allow two runs or fewer in his first five starts of the season.

"He just keeps the ball in play," said Arizona manager Kirk Gibson. "He just competes. He works on things and understands the tools that he's acquired."

Gerardo Parra tripled and scored twice, and Josh Wilson had a run-scoring double for the Diamondbacks, who at 15-10 are off to their second-best start since 2006.

Rockies All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki was lifted in the bottom of the third inning because of a strained left shoulder.

J.J. Putz pitched the ninth for his fifth save for the Diamondbacks.

Colorado has two wins in its last eight games after opening the season 13-4, falling into a first-place tie with Arizona in the NL West.

"As long as you continue to go out on a day in and day out basis and play good hard baseball and continue to do the right things, it will definitely workout" said Rockies starter Jon Garland. "We have already seen what we are able to do when we get some guys hot offensively and we are throwing the ball good."

Tulowitzki reached on a fielder's choice in the first inning and was attempting to score two batters later on a single by Michael Cuddyer when he slid awkwardly into home plate. Tulowitzki was easily tagged out by Miguel Montero from a throw by left fielder Jason Kubel.

"I didn't know he got hurt on the play," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "It sounds like he jammed his shoulder sliding into the plate."

Top Colorado prospect Nolan Arenado was called up from Triple-A Colorado Springs and went 0 for 3 with a walk while starting at third base.

The 22-year-old Arenado hit .364 with 11 doubles, three homers and 21 RBIs in 18 games for the Sky Sox. He was taken in the second round of the 2009 draft.

To make room, the Rockies designated INF Chris Nelson for assignment.

Arizona broke through against Colorado starter Jon Garland (2-2) in the third, scoring twice.

Cliff Pennington singled to right, went to second on a sacrifice and moved to third on a single to left by Gerardo Parra. After Cody Ross grounded out to advance Parra to second, Pennington scored on a passed ball charged to Wilin Rosario.

Three pitches later, Garland threw a wild pitch to score Parra for a 2-0 lead.

"You try and be aggressive without running into outs on the bases," Gibson said. "We're aware of what guys throw in certain counts and when to be aware to dirt-ball reads. `G' made a good read on that because they were playing way off at third place which allowed him to come further down the way."

Paul Goldschmidt extended the lead 3-0 in the fourth when he singled and scored on Josh Wilson's double off the left-center field wall and Parra tripled to lead off the fifth and scored on a Ross single to make it 4-0.

The Rockies cut the lead in half in the sixth. Eric Young Jr. doubled for the third time in three at-bats and scored on a single to left by Dexter Fowler. Fowler later scored on a one-out wild pitch to pull Colorado to 4-2.

Colorado chased Corbin after putting runners on first and second with two outs in the seventh. But Matt Reynolds retired Young on a short popup in front of the dirt cut around home plate on the third base side to end the threat.

Garland allowed four runs - three earned - on eight hits with two walks, one intentional. The right-hander, who entered the game 3-3 with a 4.60 ERA against his former team, struck out two.

"He could have went out there for another inning if we don't get to his (lineup) spot," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "It's another one of our starters that gave us a chance to win the game."

NOTES: Colorado is 1-9 in its last 10 series at Chase Field. . Putz threw six straight balls and bounced a throw to first base. ... Parra extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games. ... Arizona INF Martin Prado, mired in the midst of a 1-for-22 slump, was given the day off. ... Garland has pitched past the sixth inning only once in five starts. . Before the game, the Diamondbacks activated OF Jason Kubel off the 15-day disabled list and placed SS Didi Gregorius on the 7-day concussion DL. Gregorius was hit in the head with a pitch by Josh Outman on Friday. ... Kubel, who started in left field, was 10 for 30 with two doubles, two homers and six RBIs before he was placed on the disabled list with a strained left quad on April 13.

Residents concerned about health effects of hydrofracking

Apr. 28, 2013 ? s living in areas near natural gas operations, also known as hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, are concerned their illnesses may be a result of nearby drilling operations. Twenty-two percent of the participants in a small pilot study surmise that hydrofracking may be the cause of such health concerns as sinus problems, sleeping difficulties, and gastrointestinal problems.

The findings will be presented at the American Occupational Health Conference on April 28 in Orlando, Florida.

Scientists collected responses from 72 adults visiting a primary care physician's office in the hydrofracking-heavy area of Bradford County, Pa., who volunteered to complete an investigator-faciliated survey.

"Almost a quarter of participants consider natural gas operations to be a contributor to their health issues, indicating that there is clearly a concern among residents that should be addressed," says Poun? Saberi, MD, MPH, the study's principal investigator with the department of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She is also an investigator with the Center of Excellence in Environmental Toxicology (CEET) at Penn.

Within these 22 percent of responders, 13 percent viewed drilling to be the cause of their current health complaints and 9 percent were concerned that future health problems can be caused by natural gas operations. The previous health complaints by participants were thought to be anecdotal in nature as they were individual cases reported publicly only by popular media.

"What is significant about this study is that the prevalence of impressions about medical symptoms attributed to natural gas operations had not been previously solicited in Pennsylvania. This survey indicates that there is a larger group of people with health concerns than originally assumed," explains Saberi.

The survey included questions about 29 health symptoms, including those previously anecdotally reported by other residents and workers in other areas where drilling occurs. Some patient medical records were also reviewed to compare reported symptoms with those that had been previously documented. "Sinus problems, sleeping difficulties, and gastrointestinal problems were the most common symptoms reported on the Bradford survey," notes Saberi. "Of the few studied charts, there were no one-to-one correlations between the participants' reported symptoms on the survey and the presenting symptom to the medical provider in the records. This raises the possibility of communication gaps between residents with concerns and the medical community and needs further exploration. An opportunity exists to educate shale region communities and workers to report, as well as health care providers to document, the attributed symptoms as precisely as possible."

The CEET team also mapped the addresses of patients who agreed to provide them in relation to drilling to determine if proximity to drilling operations may relate to health problems.

"We hope this pilot study will guide the development of future epidemiological studies to determine whether health effects in communities in which natural gas operations are occurring is associated with air, water, and food-shed exposures and will provide a basis for health care provider education," says CEET director Trevor Penning, PhD. "The goal of science should be to protect the public and the environment before harm occurs; not simply to treat it after the damage has been done."

The Bradford County health concerns pilot study is one of three hydrofracking studies currently underway at CEET, one of 20 Environmental Health Sciences Core Centers (EHSCC) in the US, funded by the National Institutes of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS).

CEET is also partnering with Columbia University's EHSCC to measure water quality and billable health outcomes in areas with and without hydrofracking on the Pennsylvania-New York border. Using a new mapping tool developed by Harvard University, CEET and Harvard researchers are creating maps of drilling sites, air quality, water quality, and health effects to locate possible associations. Initial studies will focus on Pennsylvania. Results of both studies are expected in early 2014. These collaborative studies are funded by pilot project funds from the respective EHSCCs, which in turn obtain their financial support from NIEHS.

Colorado lawmakers seek repeal of legal pot if taxes fail | The Daily ...

When Colorado voters approved Amendment 64 legalizing recreational marijuana use in November, Gov. John Hickenlooper told its supporters that it was too soon to break out munchies like ?Cheetos or Goldfish? because there was much work to be done regulating this new industry.

It may still be too soon to celebrate.

Lawmakers grappling with how to tax marijuana have been working behind the scenes on a plan to repeal the historic law if voters don?t pass their preferred taxing scheme, according to both supporters and opponents of the pot law.

Colorado has complicated tax laws, including a requirement that voters must approve any new taxes at the ballot box. Amendment 64 also requires lawmakers present voters with a taxing option.

But some legislators are worried that those who voted in favor of legalizing marijuana ? by a margin of 55-45 ? wouldn?t be so enthusiastic to approve a proposed taxation package.

The taxation scheme includes a one-time 15 percent excise tax from cultivator to retailer, a special 15 percent marijuana-product tax and the regular 2.9 percent state sales tax.

Even though those rates might not be enough to cover the costs of regulation and enforcement of the marijuana industry, if the taxes are rejected outright, the state will be on the hook for the entire cost of regulation and oversight, with no assistance from taxes at all (outside the regular sales tax, which doesn?t require a vote).

In the event of this worse case scenario, lawmakers have been drafting a bill that would ask voters a two-part question ? one about taxes and another about repealing Amendment 64 if the tax plan isn?t passed. 9News reports that some lawmakers are trying to tie the two together, making repeal automatic if voters reject the taxes.

?Placing such a?measure on the ballot would amount to extortion of the voters,? said Mason Tvert of the Marijuana Policy Project in a statement. ?Voters will be told that they must vote for whatever taxes the?legislators choose?in order to prevent the repeal of the constitutional?amendment they approved last November.?

?We are surprised?that legislators are even taking this proposal seriously.?

An anti-marijuana group called Smart Colorado supports the proposal, but didn?t come up with the idea, says a spokesman quoted in the Denver Post.

?We talked to many legislators about the concept throughout the day,? spokesman Eric Anderson said in a statement to the paper. ?Although it?s not our proposal, we appreciate the leadership demonstrated by its authors and believe it?s worthy of consideration.?

?If voters don?t now approve new taxes on marijuana,? he added, ?Colorado?s budget will take a major hit and Amendment 64 will have exactly the opposite effect from what was promised to voters.?

Ballot measures that change the state constitution require passage by two-thirds of the legislature, and with less than two weeks to go before the end of the session, it?s not clear that supporters of the idea can muster enough votes.

Tvert also argues that only fiscal matters can appear on the Colorado ballot in odd-numbered years.

?A?repeal of Amendment 64 would be on the subject of marijuana regulations,? he wrote in a press release,??as?well as the right of individuals under the Colorado State Constitution to?possess and consume marijuana.?

Amendment 64 supporters have already hired a lawyer to fight a repeal attempt.

Google policy change stops apps like Facebook from bypassing Play Store updates

Google policy change stops apps like Facebook from bypassing Play Store updates

Google just released a new Play Store version (4.0.27) that, at first glance, contained only very minor tweaks -- except for one little thing. A new policy change will no longer permit any apps to update without going through the Play Store's internal system. That won't affect most software, but there's a notable exception in Facebook, which recently added auto-downloading to the latest version of its Android app, allowing it to bypass Play. The new policy seems designed to put a stop to that kind of thing, but you never know -- it could be just be a coincidence.

Schumer Thinks Senate Needs More than 60 Votes for Immigration to Push House to Act

Just breaking up an expected GOP filibuster of immigration legislation may not be enough. Sen. Chuck Schumer, one of the architects of the bipartisan immigration overhaul, said on Thursday that backers of the legislation?can?t afford passage barely above the filibuster-proof margin of 60 senators if they want to force the hand of the GOP-led House.

?If we were to pass this bill with say over 50 Democratic votes, which I do think is possible ? it has widespread support on the Democratic side ? and only 8 or 9 Republican votes. It would pass. We?d get to 60,? said Schumer, a New York Democrat. ?But it would bode poorly for the House.?

Schumer, appearing alongside immigration co-sponsor?Republican Sen. John McCain of Arizona at a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, said, ?It would be wonderful if we could get a majority on both sides [of the aisle].?

?Very doable,? chimed in McCain.

Speaker Boehner and House Republicans have largely played the waiting game in the 113th?Congress on both immigration and guns, hoping the Senate bogs down in partisan disputes and fails to pass any meaningful new laws. It?s worked so far on guns. To goad the House into action on an immigration measure, Schumer suggested decisive margins would be necessary.

McCain and Schumer, two Senate old-timers, were jovial with one another on Thursday, as McCain waved off a scrambled egg breakfast while Schumer eagerly sought out refills on his coffee. They interjected and finished off one another?s sentences like an old couple.

When Schumer proclaimed that ?a majority of Republicans support? a path to citizenship, McCain interrupted. ?As long as,? McCain said. Schumer completed the thought. ?There?s a path. You earn it.?

Asked about President Obama?s performance in the immigration talks, Schumer said, ?He was terrific. Just about perfect.? McCain jumped in: ?I wouldn?t go that far.?

They both agreed that the cooperative path they ? and the rest of the immigration Gang of Eight ? were plowing could help set an example for their colleagues on other issues.

?There?s a different mood in the Senate,? Schumer said, predicting ?this session is going to be a lot more productive than the last few.?

?Which is not a high bar,? added McCain.

Bangladesh building collapse toll nears 300

By Ruma Paul and Serajul Quadir

DHAKA (Reuters) - Rescuers pulled dozens of survivors from the rubble of Bangladesh's worst industrial accident on Friday, but the death toll rose towards 300 after the collapse of a building housing factories that made low-cost garments for Western brands.

Almost miraculously, 62 people trapped beneath the rubble since the eight-storey building collapsed on the outskirts of the capital, Dhaka, on Wednesday were rescued alive overnight, police and government officials said.

However, there were fears between 300 and 400 people were still inside. "Some people are still alive under the rubble and we are hoping to rescue them," deputy fire services director Mizanur Rahman said.

Junior local government minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak said the death toll had reached 292 and H. T. Imam, an adviser to Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said it could top 350.

Anger over the working conditions of Bangladesh's 3.6 million garment workers, the overwhelming majority of them women, has grown steadily since the disaster, with thousands taking to the streets to protest on Friday.

Nanak said 41 people were pulled alive from one room on the fourth floor overnight, almost 40 hours after the Rana Plaza building collapsed with more than 3,000 people inside.

Around 2,300 people have been rescued so far, at least half of them injured, from the remains of the building in the commercial suburb of Savar, about 30 km (20 miles) from Dhaka.

An industry official has said 3,122 people, mainly female garment workers, had been inside the building despite warnings that it was structurally unsafe.

Bangladesh is the second-largest exporter of garments in the world but many factories remained closed for a second day on Friday, with angry garment workers protesting against poor conditions and demanding the owners of the building and the factories it housed face harsh punishment.

Police and witnesses said protesters set fire to a number of vehicles and damaged other garment factories.

Dhaka District police chief Habibur Rahman identified the owner of the Rana Plaza building as Mohammed Sohel Rana, a leader of the ruling Awami League's youth front.

Imam, the prime minister's adviser, said Rana had "vanished into thin air".

"People are asking for his head, which is quite natural. This time we are not going to spare anybody," Imam said.

STRING OF FATAL INCIDENTS

Wednesday's building collapse was the third major industrial incident in five months in Bangladesh. In November, a fire at the Tazreen Fashion factory on the outskirts of Dhaka killed 112 people.

Such incidents have raised serious questions about worker safety and low wages in Bangladesh and could taint the poor South Asian country's reputation as a producer of low-cost products and services.

North American and European chains, including British retailer Primark and Canada's Loblaw, said they were supplied by factories in the Rana Plaza building.

Mohammad Atiqul Islam, president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), said the proprietors of the five factories inside the building had ignored the association's warning not to open on Wednesday after cracks had been seen in the building the day before.

"We asked not to open the factories and told them we will send our engineer, and until you get the green signal don't open the factories," Islam told Reuters.

"But unfortunately they violated our instructions," he said. A bank in the building did close on Wednesday after the warning.

PRAYERS, MOURNING

Savar residents and rescuers dropped bottled water and food on Thursday night to people who called out from between floors. Nearby, relatives identified their dead among dozens of corpses wrapped in cloth on the veranda of a school.

Special prayers were offered for the dead, injured and missing at mosques, temples and pagodas across Bangladesh on Friday.

Ten labour groups called for a strike on Sunday by workers at garment factories across the country.

Sixty percent of Bangladesh's garment exports go to Europe. The United States takes 23 percent and Canada takes 5 percent.

Primark, a unit of Associated British Foods, has confirmed one of its suppliers occupied the second floor of the building. Danish retailer PWT Group, which owns the Texman brand, said it had been using a factory there for seven years.

Canada's Loblaw, a unit of food processing and distribution firm George Weston Ltd, said one factory made a small number items for its "Joe Fresh" label.

Primark, Loblaw and PWT operate under codes of conduct aimed at ensuring products are made in good working conditions.

Documents including order sheets and cutting plans obtained by Reuters appeared to show that other major brands such as Benetton had used suppliers in the building in the past year.

A Benetton spokesman said none of the factories were suppliers to the company. Spain's Mango said it had an unfulfilled sample order at the plaza with Phantom Apparel.

In the Market for Synthetic Ice. What's Stopping You...all the ...

Author: Timothy Oldfield | Total views: 186 Comments: 0
Word Count: 1604 Date:

Canada is a hockey nation. The U.S.A. is certainly becoming one. This game is our culture. As long as I can remember my kids have played hockey. As the typical hockey dad I was very involved in minor hockey, and even to this day still love going to the rink to watch my kids play. Throughout this time I have seen hockey change dramatically. It has become a year round sport with spring leagues, summer camps, personal trainers, sport specific equipment, and even synthetic ice to train on at home year round.

People have all sorts of opinions around synthetic ice. Certainly there are those who really like it and cannot get enough of it. Still there are those who will hate it, can't skate on it and will never want to try it again. Admittedly it can be difficult for one to get their head around skating on plastic - in particular for both adults and skating purists. The questions are endless. "Do you use regular skates"? "Can you stop on it?" "Is it close to real ice?" "What is the maintenance?" "How do you compare company X with Company Y?" "What makes your product better?" 'Why is yours so expensive?" "Why is yours so cheap?" And on and on it goes. The debate will go on. I can tell you this much. My two children grew up training at home on synthetic ice and they are two of the nicest, strongest skaters you will ever see. So yes I'm biased, but it certainly helped my kids and they love it.

In the mind of the consumer, no matter what brand you buy, none of it is "cheap". You are taking your hard earned money and putting it toward your kids skating future - it doesn't matter if they are figure skaters, sledge hockey players, or ringette players. You are likely going to drop thousands of dollars whether you buy the very best product or the very worst. Frankly, it is worthwhile to do some research and understand a few things that will make or break the purchase and user experience. Hey its fine to buy a cheaper product or conversely the most expensive one so long as it meets your particular application and expectation.

Based on survey research we've completed, one of the major reasons people hesitate or simply don't buy the product is because they simply cannot get what they feel is credible information from the supplier. For example when a consumer asks "why should I buy from you verses your competitor?" and the answer is "well I've been in the industry for 30 years". Well that's not really an answer is it? Think about it. GM has been in the car business for a long time too, but that didn't stop them from filing for bankruptcy and needing to completely overhaul the company. Its just one barometer, not the only one.

The consumer expects good information. The problem is that they may not always know what good information is. They don't know what they don't know. So what do they do? They will often default to price. One thing the consumer does understand is price, and that is something easily compared. The concern with that is the consumer may never get the product quality and skating experience that they expect. So what's a consumer to do?

Well let's think this through logically. The buyer should know that they will almost never get the best product for the lowest price. Then there is the low end of the market when we are discussing price and material qaulity? And for the lowest price what would they get? At worst you can stand on your skates and shoot a puck and stickhandle. At best they will get a product that can be skated on and might actually be pretty well suited for the small home rink. Here again, consumers need to be realistic and manage their own expectations. Meanwhile the sellers of product have to do so with integrity and reliable information that is backed up by fact...not just ego and opinions. There is a market at the low end of the product scale. The reality is however that these products will never be the best nor should they ever be marketed as such. That would just be irresponsible. The likely price range for this category will be between $6.00 and $8.00 per square foot - and frankly there will be a significant difference even between $6 and $8 per square foot product, so just use this as a guide.

The next level - for simplicity - for simplicity sake just call this one the mid-level performer and it will likely be the most common type of product available in the market. Here we are talking about typically massed produced sheet material such as HMWPe (High Molecular Weight Pe) and HDPe (High Density Pe) that is simply machined into a suitable panel and can be used for skating. The results will vary widely of course because there are a wide range of product materials within these categories. There are also differences in how the materials are made from injection molded and extrusion on the lower to mid-range of this category to sinter pressed material on the higher end of this category. We can debate the differences and it would be a lengthy debate - and it is here where you start to lose the consumer with technical talk about molecular weight and coefficient of friction etc.. The key thing for the consumer to know here is to buy a mid grade product you want to have a 500,000 molecular weight specification. If you just do that one thing then your skate experience will be a good one for the long term. Expect to pay between $9.00 and $12.00 per square foot. This will be the majority of sales to home rink buyers who just want a good product to skate on for their kids at home, and in all likelihood they will become satisfied consumers. Once again however, don't assume that a $9.00 product material is the same as a $12.00 product. One might be extruded, one might be sinter pressed so the durability, quality and skating perofrmance can still vary widely. If you want to really separate the quality material from something that might be "suspect" then ask to see a copy of their certificate of material authenticity. Companies with ridged quality systems in place understand this. Companies that say they are the best but can not produce such a document will quickly fade from the conversation. I'm always suspicious of that.

Now, onward and upward. The last category of product to consider is the high end products. There really may only be three or four products truly worthy of being in this category - sorry for the sellers, manufacturers and distributors that think theirs is the only product worth talking about in the marketplace - but it just ain't so. If a homeowner is planning on a 200 square foot rink then they really should not worry about buying a product with the best glide. Save your money and go with low or medium end product as already described. You can't truly appreciate a better skating product if the surface is so small you will never get to full stride. On the other hand larger home rinks like 1000 square feet and up or certainly commercially operated synthetic ice surfaces really need to pay attention to only this category. When your business income is dependant on the quality of the skating and long term product durability then you really need not bother considering anything but a product within this category! In this category there are essentially two types of material. One is classified as VHMWPe (Very High Molecular Weight Pe) and the other is UHMWPe (Ultra High Molecular Weight Pe). Products within this category are typically sinter pressed simply because it the only reliable manufacturing process when the molecular weight is so high. As a buyer, if you are unsure of what you are getting simply ask the seller for the material specification sheet, and also ask to see the manufacturing quality certificate, such as ISO 14001 or ISO 9000 or similar. This will at least ensure you are most likely getting what you should be getting in terms of consistent high quality material within these classifications. The debate can continue about the superior skating material for the long term but these are the most expensive materials and you can expect to pay between $18.00 and $24.00 per square foot for these materials. Even in the high end category prices can vary. The material will be different but so will the joint connection system. There are at least five vastly different, but effective in their own way, systems out there. It is important that the joint connection system is based on the proper understanding of the project application. Suffice to say, there is no one synthetic ice panel connection system that is the best at every application - so just ignore those companies that make this claim.

So there you have it. Three categories of product somewhat simplified as a way for buyers to better understand what they are getting into. Hopefully this can help you at least zone in on one of these categories to help make better, more informed decisions and set buyer expectations. It might be worthwhile to find and talk to companies that actually sell all three categories; at least then all your information can come from one (hopefully) reliable source.

Heat take off late, top Bucks 98-86 for 2-0 lead

MIAMI (AP) ? Everyone in the Miami huddle was bracing for a grind to the finish. On the other end, the sense around the Milwaukee bench was that an upset was there for the taking.

Then the Heat landed a swift knockout punch.

Dwyane Wade scored 21 points, LeBron James finished with 19 and the Heat used a frantic start to the fourth quarter to pull away and beat the Bucks 98-86 in Game 2 of the teams' Eastern Conference first-round series on Tuesday night.

It was 68-65 entering the fourth. With James and four backups on the court, the Heat needed only 2 minutes, 22 seconds to outscore Milwaukee 12-0 and stretch the lead to 80-65 ? ensuring the reigning NBA champions would take a 2-0 series lead into Game 3 on Thursday night.

"We held court," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We protected it for two games. We did what we're supposed to do. And that's it."

Chris Bosh, Shane Battier and Chris Andersen all scored 10 points for the Heat. James' postseason streaks of 22 straight games with at least 20 points, and 16 straight games of at least 25 points, both came to an end.

Ultimately, none of that mattered.

"We didn't get into our game like we wanted to in that third quarter," James said. "But we went into the fourth with a (three-point) lead and we were able to jump on them."

Ersan Ilyasova scored 21 points for Milwaukee, which got 16 from Mike Dunleavy and 14 from Larry Sanders. The Bucks' starting guards, Brandon Jennings and Monta Ellis, combined for only 15 points ? after teaming up to score 48 in Game 1.

"It's a series," said Sanders, who had a sore right ankle after he collided with Battier in the fourth quarter. "We made progress this game."

They'll need to make more, and do it quickly. James has never lost in 10 previous series where his team takes a 2-0 lead, and Wade is 8-0 in that same situation.

"In the playoffs you've got to find different ways to win," Wade said. "No matter what everybody says on the outside, (Milwaukee) is a good team. They played us very well."

For about 46 minutes, the Bucks played them even.

It was that 12-0 run that was the difference ? in what finished as a 12-point game.

Andersen started it with a three-point play, James had a layup not long afterward and the Heat were starting to roll. Another basket by Andersen off a pass from Ray Allen made it 77-65, and James found Norris Cole for a 3-pointer that capped the flurry and made it 80-65.

Just like that, it was over, even to Miami's surprise.

"They were doing some things that had us spinning around a little bit defensively, got us on our heels, and offensively we never got into a rhythm," Spoelstra said. "So we figured we were just going to have to find a way to grind in the fourth quarter, figuring it was going to be a close game."

The Heat have raved about their depth all season, so they had no qualms about sending James out to start the fourth with Cole, Andersen, Battier and Ray Allen.

By the time starters like Wade and Bosh got back onto the court, the task was merely protecting the lead, which the Heat did with relative ease.

"We felt pretty good about the position we were in, giving ourselves an opportunity on the road with 12 minutes to go," Bucks coach Jim Boylan said. "You feel good about that. Then they come out, go on a 12-0 run and it changes the complexion of the game. Playing catch-up is very hard to do against a high-quality team like Miami."

Jennings and Ellis combined for 48 points in Game 1, and the Bucks got blown out. So in the first half of Game 2, they combined for one point, were held to five shots that all missed ... and the Bucks were within 47-43 at halftime.

Chances are, very few would have seen that coming.

But play was sloppy from the outset, with the teams combining for eight turnovers in the first 6 minutes to set the tone for a clumsy first half. Wade, James and Chalmers shot 15 for 19 combined in the first half for Miami ? and the rest of the Heat were 3 for 17. For Milwaukee, Ilyasova had 12 points in the first 10 minutes, then two points the rest of the half.

So much like in Game 1, Milwaukee came out for the second half with a chance of stealing home-court advantage.

And for the entirety of the third quarter, the Bucks hung around, though the Heat showed some signs of getting things going. Bosh had a dunk for a six-point lead, then made a jumper ? on a play that James started by running down a loose ball and flicking it between his legs for a save along the sideline ? for a 68-60 lead, what was then the biggest Heat margin of the night.

The Bucks got within 68-65 to end the third, but then came the run that Miami had been waiting for all evening.

Jennings said Milwaukee would win in six games before the series began, and his confidence didn't waver even now with his club in an 0-2 hole.

"We showed a lot of improvement tonight," said Jennings, who shot 3 for 15. "Aside of making that run in the fourth I think we should have won this game."

Both teams got a big scare with 6:59 left. Battier drove for a layup from the right wing, and Sanders rushed down the middle of the lane to attempt a block. A collision ensued and both players hit the court awkwardly, Battier hitting his head on the hardwood and Sanders ? who fell over Battier ? grabbing at his right leg.

Battier made two free throws, then departed for the Heat locker room to get stitches on his chin.

NOTES: It's the 11th time the Heat have gone up 2-0 in a playoff series. They're 10-0 in the previous instances. ... Milwaukee has lost 21 of its last 29 playoff games. ... Sanders was third in the NBA's Most Improved Player voting, behind Indiana's Paul George and New Orleans' Greivis Vasquez. "Look where he was last year and where he is today. The improvement is very obvious," said Boylan, who thought Sanders should have won. ... Jennings was held without a first-half basket for only the fifth time all season.

Link between inherited endocrine tumor syndrome and much-studied cell pathway

Apr. 24, 2013 ? A mutation in a protein called menin causes a hereditary cancer syndrome called MEN1 (multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1). Individuals with MEN1 are at a substantially increased risk of developing neuroendocrine tumors, including cancer of the pancreatic islet cells that secrete insulin.

Yet knowing these connections and doing something to improve fighting the syndrome are two different things. Researchers still did not exactly understand how menin mutations lead to MEN1 syndrome, and more importantly, what molecular pathways might be dysregulated by menin mutations and thus can be targeted to improve therapy against this type of cancer. Now, researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania have found that pathway, which may lead to a new treatment for patients with MEN1 and sporadic endocrine tumors.

A research team led by Xianxin Hua, MD, PhD, associate professor of Cancer Biology at the Abramson Family Cancer Research Institute, report in Cancer Research that menin suppresses signaling in the much-studied Hedgehog pathway in endocrine organs. Menin mutations lead to increased Hedgehog signaling and cell proliferation. They found that inhibiting proteins in the Hedgehog network using drugs reduces growth of tumors in an animal model of human MEN1 syndrome.

Unlike many cancer-associated proteins, menin is neither an enzyme nor a signaling receptor. Instead, the team discovered that menin works by physically interacting with a second protein, PRMT5. The menin-PRMT5 complex binds to the promoter of the Gas1 gene, where PRMT5 (an enzyme that adds methyl groups to histone proteins) functions as an epigenetic inhibitor, tamping down gene transcription. The GAS1 protein promotes Hedgehog signaling, and thus by inhibiting Gas1 expression, menin and PRMT5 effectively dial down the pathway's tendency towards cell proliferation.

"This study uncovered a new layer of regulation of pro-proliferative genes by menin via the Hedgehog signaling pathway," Hua says. "These pro-replication genes are regulated through GAS1 and PRMT5."

Discovering the link between menin and Hedgehog was serendipitous, says Hua. Using microarray analysis, his team found that loss of menin results in increased expression of the Gas1 gene. Separately, other groups reported that GAS1 mediates Hedgehog signaling. That knowledge gave Hua's team the missing piece of information required to identify menin's normal cellular function. "We found menin linked to Hedgehog signaling by suppressing expression of GAS1, leading to the suppression of Hedgehog signaling in endocrine tissue."

Significantly, Hua's team found that menin mutant proteins associated with MEN1 cancer in patients were impaired in their ability to interact with PRMT5, and thus, in adding the methyl chemical group to the Gas1 promoter gene. What's more, treating a mouse model of human MEN1 syndrome with a Hedgehog pathway inhibitor called Erivedge (FDA-approved in 2012 for metastatic or locally advanced basal cell carcinoma) reduced proliferation of tumor cells and blood insulin levels. That, says Hua, suggests a potential new treatment for patients with MEN1 syndrome, and also likely for sporadic endocrine tumors, some 40 percent of which also contain menin mutations

"Because we show in this mouse tumor model that we can significantly suppress proliferation of tumor cells in pancreatic islets and that we can reduce the higher insulin levels with a drug, which was just clinically approved to be safe, that naturally raises the question of whether, in patients who have mutation in this gene or enhanced Hedgehog signaling, this drug can improve patient symptoms to reduce tumor progression or insulinemia," Hua asks.

First author and postdoctoral fellow in the Hua lab Buddha Gurung, PhD, adds "the possibilities of translating these findings into a viable therapeutic option is extremely exciting."

The George W. Bush library's version of history

A guard stands outside the Bush library in Dallas (Ron T. Ennis/Fort Worth Star-Telegram via Getty Images)

DALLAS?As former President George W. Bush prepares to officially open his presidential library on Thursday, a question arises as it has for his predecessors: How objective will it be about his time in the White House?

Bush left office five years ago as one of the most unpopular presidents in history, his poll numbers weighed down by public discontent over his handling of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and worries about the economy.

But the former president wanted to take the controversies about his presidency head-on, say several former aides who worked closely with him on the library. One way of addressing the challenge is an interactive exhibit allowing visitors to see what it was like for him to make decisions as leader of the free world. People will hear information Bush was given by aides, then be asked to make their own choices. Afterward, the former president's image will appear on a screen to explain what decision he ultimately made and why.

?He really wants people to go in there and get a sense of what it was like to be president during that time and to use that to make an informed decision about his presidency,? said Karen Hughes, a longtime Bush adviser.

But Bush?s museum is likely to face scrutiny over what version of history he?s telling?especially with his time in office still fresh in the minds of many Americans.

He?s not the only one who has faced this dilemma. When former President Bill Clinton?s library opened in Little Rock, Ark., in 2004, the library was criticized for not devoting more space to what some at the time believed was the biggest issue of his presidency: the scandal of his inappropriate relationship with a former White House intern that ultimately lead to the House voting to impeach him.

While the goal of presidential libraries is to be more focused on history than politics, those involved in creating them say it?s unreasonable to think they won?t be influenced by a former president?s point of view?especially as libraries are increasingly seen as vehicles through which former leaders try to shape legacies.

?Bush wants to people to know the kind of decisions he had to make in the course of his presidency and give [a rationale] for why he made those decisions,? said Mark Updegrove, director of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library in Austin, Texas, who is also working on a book about Bush and his father, former President George H.W. Bush.

?There is great value in trying to understand why Bush did what he did,? Updegrove added. ?You don?t have to agree with him, but there?s value in trying to understand his perspective.?

Aides say Bush and his wife, Laura, were ?heavily? involved in the creation of the library?s exhibits, though they haven?t said exactly how hands-on the former president was.

Skip Rutherford, a longtime friend and adviser to Clinton who led the 42nd president?s library effort, recalls ordering Clinton to do a ?brain dump? with the people who designed exhibits while Clinton was still president.

?I basically said to him, ?Just talk to them about your successes and failures, what you thought you did well, where you thought you felt short, your best day and your worst day, what you would have done differently,?? Rutherford recalled in an interview with Yahoo News.

?Bring as many Diet Cokes as you need,? he recalled telling Clinton.

A few days later, Clinton spent more than three hours talking to the designers of his library, doing just what Rutherford had asked. And not surprisingly, his discussion with the group was very detailed. Clinton "was passing on names of people they should talk to and recalling pictures of certain meetings he had that could be used,? Rutherford said. ?He has an incredible memory.?

In some ways, Bush?s library will be the first draft of history about his administration. Not unlike other museums, presidential libraries often go through renovations and exhibit changes over the years, as history gains a better understanding of a certain presidency.

When the LBJ library opened in 1971, the former president asked staffers to include an exhibit on the Vietnam War and to quickly work to assemble and declassify his presidential papers related to it, in hopes the public would come to understand his thinking behind the events that clouded his final days in office.

Over the years, that exhibit has been updated?most recently with a $10 million renovation, which expanded the section on LBJ and Vietnam to include more perspectives, including his efforts to gain input from members of Congress and how media coverage was affecting his decision-making.

But the exhibit also plays up LBJ?s work on domestic issues, including civil rights, education and health care?issues largely overshadowed by controversies over Vietnam.

In that vein, Updegrove sees parallels between LBJ and Bush, who designed a library that also tries to call attention to domestic accomplishments he and his aides believe were overshadowed by the war. Updegrove says the Iraq War, not unlike Vietnam for LBJ, is likely to cloud the public?s assessment of Bush for ?many years to come,? especially since Iraq's fate is still largely unknown.

By then, Bush will likely want to renovate his library?just as the other living presidents have done in order to keep up with modern technology and evolving public opinion about issues in their presidency.

At the Clinton library, staffers there are waiting to see what Clinton has to say after seeing the new Bush library.

?Everybody thinks he?s going to go down to Dallas and come back and say, ?We need this, we need to do that,'? Rutherford says. By contrast, George H.W. Bush pushed for a major overhaul of his library after attending the Clinton opening in 2004.

?Everybody is bracing for when [Clinton] comes back from Dallas.?

Skin cancer linked to future risk of other cancers

    Wednesday, April 24, 2013

White people who have types of skin cancer other than melanoma (non-melanoma skin cancer) may be at increased risk of having other forms of cancer in the future, according to a study by US researchers published in this week's PLOS Medicine.

The analysis, led by Dr. Jiali Han, an Associate Professor from Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School in the US, found that men and women with a history of non-melanoma skin cancers?the most common form of cancer in the United States and includes basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma?had a 15% and 26% increased risk, respectively, of developing another form of cancer compared with those who had no such history.

The researchers (also the authors of the published paper), reached these conclusions by analysing information from two large US cohorts (group) studies followed till 2008?the Health Professionals Follow-up Study (which enrolled 51,529 male health professionals in 1986) and the Nurses' Health Study (which enrolled 121,700 female nurses in 1976).

The authors identified 36,102 new cases of non-melanoma skin cancer and 29,447 new cases of other cancers in white participants. When excluding melanoma, the authors found that a history of non-melanoma skin cancer was linked to an 11% higher risk of other cancers in men and a 20% higher risk of other cancers in women. After correction for multiple comparisons, the authors found that a history of non-melanoma skin cancer was significantly linked to an increased risk of breast and lung cancer in women and of melanoma in both men and women.

The authors say: "This prospective study found a modestly increased risk of subsequent malignancies among individuals with a history of non-melanoma skin cancer, specifically breast and lung cancer in women and melanoma in both men and women."

They continue: "Because our study was observational, these results should be interpreted cautiously and are insufficient evidence to alter current clinical recommendations."

The authors add: "Nevertheless, these data support a need for continued investigation of the potential mechanisms underlying this relationship."
