Many people seem to think that they can just take their vehicle into any old auto repair shop and have quality work performed. If getting top notch repairs was so easy, every single auto repair facility in the world would be raking in an excessive amount of profits, so much that the price of receiving care for your automobile might become something that you may not be able to afford. Have you ever heard of the saying that you get what you pay for? Its moments of transporting beauty and visual brilliance overcame my growing aversion to Wes Anderson's brand of ultra-stylized archness.

We may look back on Anderson's works as we do on the boxes of Joseph Cornell -- formal troves of frippery, studded with nostalgic private jokes, that lodge inexplicably in the heart. In Moonrise Kingdom, that lodging is already under way.

It makes you nostalgic for the pangs of young love.

What makes it an Anderson movie are the things he adds which mark all his films - the pop-cultural obsessions and excruciatingly detailed set decorations, overarching thematic concerns and little stylistic tics.

I liked this one because of its young performers, the evocative island setting (filmed in Rhode Island), Alexandre Desplat's lovely score and Robert Yeoman's slightly grainy cinematography.

The director's best film since 1998's Rushmore, it has none of the self-conscious smugness of The Life Aquatic or the empty eccentricity of The Royal Tenenbaums.

A gossamer fable of adolescent romance, played out with the cheekily whimsical, visually delicious style for which Anderson is famous.

Wes Anderson's most sartorially significant film yet.

At once funny and melancholic, whimsical and poignantly true.

One is at times reminded of AE Housman.

Moonrise Kingdom is a delight... stuffed full of the quirky details and gags that are Anderson's trademarks, but it also possesses an emotional undertow that will tug at those viewers in tune with its singular sensibility.

Capturing our inner children

If the deadpan sensibility of the film ultimately leaves it feeling a tad lightweight, that isn't to say that Moonrise Kingdom isn't a funny, witty and well-crafted film.

Typically quirky Wes Anderson dramedy has lots of heart.

A bittersweet and evocative period piece that's both a visual and narrative delight.

No one has an eye or sensibility like Anderson's, but this is a chilly disappointment. The unaffecting kids are meant to be the emotional center, yet the adults steal the film.

I really wanted to like this film. I respect Wes Anderson and his distinctive voice as a writer-director ('Rushmore' is one of my favorite films of the 1990s), but this latest endeavor is so precious and self-aware that it nearly smothers itself.

Those who find the director's work flawed by preciousness, however, may grow impatient well before the movie reaches the 90-minute mark.

Anderson has imagined the '60s on the East Coast as if from an Eddie Bauer catalog and Boys' Life, with the sensibility of The New Yorker.

Like many holiday locations, you wouldn't want to live there, but a mini-break from the norm can be a real tonic.

A sweet, charming and altogether delightful bit of whimsy from writer/director Wes Anderson.

I normally end up liking Wes Anderson's films, but I love this one.

The delightful Moonrise Kingdom marks a career high for offbeat auteur Wes Anderson.

First lady's book: On growing seeds, healthy kids

WASHINGTON (AP) ? From the beginning, Michelle Obama's kitchen garden has been an overachiever, churning out more peppers, parsley and eggplant than expected, and generating interest that ? yes, really ? crosses oceans.

Now, the first lady has added a 271-page book to her gardening resume, and Americans can read all about the planting misses that came with the hits, get tips on gardening at home, and, Mrs. Obama hopes, draw some inspiration that just might change their lives. Oh, and if it happens to help her husband's re-election campaign, that would be nice, too.

Lofty goals for a book about a garden.

In "American Grown: The Story of the White House Kitchen Garden and Gardens Across America," Mrs. Obama holds out the raised vegetable beds on the South Lawn as "an expression of my hopes" for the nation's children. "Just as each seed we plant has the potential to become something extraordinary, so does every child," she writes.

The $30 book, released Tuesday by Crown Publishers, traces how a city kid from the South Side of Chicago who became a working mother and then a political spouse found herself fretting on that first planting day, March 20, 2009, about whether an L-shaped stretch of soil would prove fertile ground for a national conversation "about the food we eat, the lives we lead, and how all of that affects our children."

The book, which answers that question with a resounding yes, arrives just in time for her husband's re-election campaign.

And while the book is decidedly non-political, that fits perfectly with the Obama campaign's view that the first lady can do her husband a world of good simply by pushing the non-threatening causes such as healthy living that have made her a far more popular figure than the president himself. Mrs. Obama's favorability rating in the latest AP-GfK poll was 70 percent, compared with 58 percent for her husband.

The book's release comes with a flurry of media appearances. She's already been a TV frequent flyer to promote her "Let's Move" campaign to combat childhood obesity ? doing pushups with Ellen DeGeneres, playing tug-of-war with Jimmy Fallon in the White House and serving veggie pizza to Jay Leno. She says she gets asked about the garden wherever she goes, around the world.

The book is chock full of colorful, glossy photos of luscious-looking vegetables, complete with a cover picture in which the first lady's blouse seems to be color-coordinated with the eggplants in her bulging basket of produce. Bo, the popular family dog, gets plenty of cameo appearances. There are maps tracing the growth of the garden over the past three years, and stories about community gardens around the country. Even a how-to on creating a compost bin.

The book is divided into four sections marking the seasons, and includes a complement of recipes for each.

There are inside stories about planting travails that will ring true with any weekend gardener: pumpkins that wouldn't grow, cantaloupes that tasted blah, blackberry bushes that wouldn't play nice with the raspberry bushes and an invasion of cucumber beetles, among them. The first lady makes clear she's not the one doing most of the hoeing and weeding, crediting school kids, White House chefs and grounds crew and enthusiastic volunteers from all over the White House chain of command with providing lots of manpower.

And there are bits of historical trivia woven throughout: John Adams ordered up the first White House garden, but it was never harvested after he lost re-election. Thomas Jefferson was obsessed with trying to grow a four-foot-long cucumber. Heiress Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, at 101 now a figure in the John Edwards' corruption trial, helped redesign the Rose Garden for President John Kennedy.

There are also bits of personal history: Mrs. Obama's father worked as a boy on one of the vegetable trucks that would deliver produce to neighborhoods, and had a reputation for sneaking pieces of fruit. Her mother's family had a plot in a neighborhood victory garden on the corner of an alley, and the kids had to eat their vegetables or go to bed without supper.

It is a tradition for first ladies to use books to advance their causes. Hillary Clinton wrote the best-seller "It Takes a Village," about the importance of community in raising children; and Laura Bush collaborated with daughter Jenna on a picture book about a reluctant reader, with "Read All About It!"

This is Michelle Obama's first book. She got no advance payment, and plans to donate all her proceeds to the National Park Foundation for programs that promote gardening and healthy eating, and to help care for the White House garden.

We are opening one PhD position in mathematical statistics with focus on stochastic modelling and statistical analysis of spatio-temporal data. The candidate will work in a multi-disciplinary research project with specific application area, e.g. in medical engineering, forest science, remote sensing and environmental monitoring.

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD position at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics at Ume? University, Sweden. The general aim of a graduate student position is to provide its holder with a possibility to earn a PhD degree. The position is for 48 months of research. As a PhD student you will perform research and take courses on graduate level.

Prerequisites and assessment criteria:
Prerequisites include either i) 240 ECTS-credits (swe. h?gskolepo?ng) of higher education studies of which 60 should be on an advanced level (Master level), or ii) 120 Swedish (old) credits (swe. po?ng; corresponding to 180 ECTS-credits) of higher education studies if they were taken before July 1, 2007. In addition to these general requirements, 90 ECTS credits need to be in the area of mathematical statistics of which 30 should be on an advanced level (Master level). Competent is also applicants that otherwise, within or outside the country, acquired essentially equivalent knowledge.

The PhD project is based on multi-disciplinary collaboration, therefore the candidate needs to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others. Applicants with a degree not from a Swedish university are encouraged to provide results obtained from GMAT (and/or GRE) and TOEFL tests if available. The candidate also needs to have a genuine interest, not necessarily documented knowledge, in working with computers and programming, e.g. in Matlab or R.

Teaching at bachelor?s level is normally in Swedish, although teaching at master?s and PhD levels is in English. Thus, good language skills are required. Applicants who do not have Swedish as their native language should be able to teach in Swedish after two years of employment.

The assessments of the applicants are based on their qualifications and their ability to benefit from the doctoral-level education they will receive.

There are people who talk back to such voices and affected individuals think that the voices are received from someone powerful, hence forcing them to react based on just what the voices state. MADRID (AP) ? The board of directors of Spain's troubled bank, Bankia, says it has agreed to ask for ?19 billion ($23.8 billion) in state funds.

In a statement released late Friday the bank's president, Jose Ignacio Goirigolzarri said the recapitalization "reinforced the solvency, liquidity and solidity of the bank."

The decision came on the same day as credit rating agency Standard & Poor'downgraded Bankia and four other Spanish banks to junk status because of uncertainty over restructuring and recapitalization plans.

Trading in Bankia shares were suspended Friday while its board determined how much new aid was needed.

The bank's shares have been whipped about violently in recent weeks on fears it could succumb to the massive losses it has built up in in bad loans in the country's collapsed real estate sector.

CANNES, France (AP) ? Brad Pitt is making the movie star thing look darn easy.

Since he last collaborated with Andrew Dominik, he's starred in the Coen brothers' "Burn After Reading," David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," Quentin Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds," Terrence Malick's "The Tree of Life," and Bennett Miller's "Moneyball."

It's been arguably the best stretch of his career, one vacillating between comedy and drama and defined not by summer blockbusters but by provocative director-oriented fare.

The bookends to the period are Dominik's "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" and "Killing Them Softly," which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this week.

Things are going great even as Pitt insists that movie-making is not his top priority.

"Right now, I'm just attracted to being a dad," said Pitt in an interview in a hotel penthouse in Cannes. "Film-wise, we get to do this thing and I feel very fortunate to get to do this. So I want to contribute to the art form. I think the films have to speak to our time and be authentic in their approach."

"Killing Them Softly" is adapted from George V. Higgins' 1974 crime novel "Cogan's Trade." It's a stylized, ruthless noir with a host of fine performances ? by James Gandolfini, Scoot McNairy, Ben Mendelsohn and Ray Liotta ? in a brutally violent criminal wasteland.

Just as "Jesse James" used the western genre to explore a contemporary idea (celebrity culture), "Killing Them Softly" is really about capitalism. While gangsters and criminals maneuver in a grim world of backstabbing, reputation guarding and the perpetual pursuit of money, the background of the film is filled with speeches and billboards of former President George W. Bush and President Barack Obama. Dominik has transplanted the story to 2008, adding the financial crisis as a backdrop for a cynical commentary on American greed.

"I immediately latched on to it because it was precisely the stories we were seeing on the news every day," says Pitt. "Everyone was talking about restoring market confidence and meanwhile people were losing their homes left and right."

Dominik, the New Zealand-born filmmaker of considerable visual flare, wrote the script in the midst of the financial crisis. He saw a connection between Wall Street's power brokers and Higgins' hoods: both showed "the consequences of blindly chasing a buck."

"Maybe crime films are about capitalism at its blunt, bottom end," says the director. "It became a vehicle for some ideas."

The quality of Pitt's movies in recent years may not be a coincidence. He's increasingly produced films through his production company, Plan B. The company was more nascent when it produced "Jesse James," but has recently had noted success. Plan B helped produce last year's Palm d'Or winner in Cannes, "The Tree of Life," and the Oscar-nominated "Moneyball."

"I don't expect every year to go that way," he says. "According to the laws of physics, things will balance out. But we're clear in our mandate: Pushing stories and helping storytellers get the film to the screen. Ones that are tougher, we feel we can help out."

Made with a production budget of $30 million, "Jesse James" failed to take in even $4 million at the box office, severely hampering Dominik's prospects in Hollywood. Pitt says the director "took a hit" after the film.

"The paint is not celluloid, it's money," says Dominik, who made "Killing Them Softly" on a smaller budget. "It's what the filmmaker works with."

Pitt runs Plan B, which produced "Killing Them Softly," with Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, and compares their trio to "a little garage band."

"I'm focusing more on producing this year than getting in front of the camera," says Pitt, adding that he's particularly excited about producing the next film from director Steve McQueen ("Shame"). "Killing Them Softly" will be released this fall.

Higgins' "The Friends of Eddie Coyle" was made into a film in 1973 starring Robert Mitchum. It, too, was a box office disappointment but has a devoted cult and critical following. It led Dominik to pick up a copy of Higgins' "Cogan's Trade."

"There was an untapped vein," says Dominik. "It was like after 'All the Pretty Horses' they decided, 'Cormac McCarthy movies, nobody wants to see that.'"

Dominik gave a comedic tone to the story, which is largely centered on a series of Beckett-like conversations between the thieves, punctured by bloody outbursts. On hatching a dubious plan, one says: "We're not the only smart guys in the world."

"I wanted it to be very square and straight faced, almost like a comic strip panel," says Dominik.

Pitt is now 48 and has six children with Angelina Jolie, who didn't join him in Cannes. The couple, who alternate their movies so neither is in production at the same time, is currently staying outside of London while Jolie shoots a film in the area. The more measured pace suits Pitt.

"It just doesn't happen back to back to back," says Pitt. "You need time off to refuel and to be inspired again. There's no greater inspiration than family."

U. NOTTINGHAM (UK) ? Researchers are using GPS and satellite communication technology to track elephants in Malaysia and to evaluate the government?s conservation efforts.

A hundred years ago wild elephants on the Malay Peninsular could be counted in the thousands?now there are fewer than 1,500. Over the last century around 50 percent of forest cover in Peninsular Malaysia has been lost.

Experts from the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) and the Malaysian Department of Wildlife and National Parks are tracking some of the remaining elephants to assess the effectiveness of the Malaysian Government?s elephant conservation and management practices.

MEME, the Management & Ecology of Malaysian Elephants, is a five year research project led by Ahimsa Campos-Arceiz, an ecologist and conservation expert, in the School of Geography.

Campos-Arceiz says: ?If we lose the elephants we lose a unique element of tropical ecosystems. When elephants walk they trample the soil and impact the forest in a way that no other animal does. When elephants eat, they modify the structure of vegetation, releasing plant parts that can be consumed by other herbivores. When elephants eat fruits, they disperse seeds.

?Ultimately, elephants create habitat heterogeneity and promote forest regeneration. All this will be lost and we will have a much more simplified ecosystem that is less resilient and has lost a lot of its diversity.?

Tropical forest at risk

Recent research led by Campos-Arceiz has shown that the elimination of seed-dispersing animals such as the Asian elephant puts the structural integrity and biodiversity of the tropical forest of South-East Asia at risk.

His team of international experts has confirmed that not even herbivores like tapirs can replace them in doing this essential job. Their study has just been published in the academic journal Biotropica.

Campos-Arceiz says: ?Elephants and rhinoceroses play a unique ecological role that cannot be replaced by other species. These mega herbivores act as the ?gardeners? of humid tropical forests. They are vital to forest regeneration and maintain its structure and biodiversity.

?If the elephants and rhinoceroses are lost the ecological trajectories of the ecosystem will change irreversibly.?

Human-elephant conflict

Hunted for their tusks and stripped of their natural habitat to make way for crops, roads, and new settlements, the Asian elephant is listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature?s Red List.

MEME will produce information on how elephants move in natural habitats as well as in human-dominated landscapes and how they respond to translocation?one of the practices used to move elephants away from areas of human-elephant conflict (HEC).

The project is also looking at non-invasive techniques to extract DNA and hormones from elephant feces, developing cost-effective strategies to mitigate human-elephant conflict, and improving our understanding of elephant ecological function in tropical rainforests.

Tracking technology

MEME and the Department of Wildlife and National Parks aim to develop a conservation strategy based on scientifically sound knowledge of elephant behavior, ecology, and a clear understanding of the underlying causes of human-elephant conflict.

In the next few years they intend to fit 50 elephants, which are three percent of the Malaysian elephant population, with GPS-satellite tracking devices to monitor how they are responding to the changes in their habitat, how they react to translocation?and what effect current conservation measures such as highway viaducts and wildlife corridors are having on the elephant population on the Malay Peninsula.

Once the GPS collar is fitted the elephant?s whereabouts can be tracked in the field using VHF radio signal or at any location with internet connection to access the GPS locations transmitted by the collar via satellite phone. With USB internet modems, the team is often able to access Internet in the field, which makes field tracking far easier.

MEME in action

Campos-Arceiz and his team work in close collaboration with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks of Peninsular Malaysia. They have a permanent field center deep in the Malaysian jungle, a field project manager, and a team of research assistants and field assistants who are already monitoring nine elephants which have been fitted with the specially designed tracking collars.

The project has received funding of approximately $1.1 million from a foundation set up by the Malaysian based multinational Sime Darby to help MEME develop a long term strategy to protect the country?s elephant population. Other important donors for the project are Singapore Zoo, Copenhagen Zoo, the National Zoo (US), US Fish & Wildlife Service, and private philanthropists.

The new funding will help to support three PhDs specifically for Malaysian students to study elephant stress levels, the development of genetic molecular tools to study elephant populations in tropical rainforests and the characterization and mitigation of HECs.

Campos-Arceiz says: ?These scholarships will help to establish a bigger pool of local experts in wildlife management. We also employ staff from the Orang Asli community, Malaysian indigenous people, to tap into their expertise and knowledge of the elephants and their habitat in the rainforests of Peninsular Malaysia.?
