Why Tap Water is Not Safe For Bathing, Showering, Drinking ...

Is tap water safe for bathing, showering or drinking? Why question the safety of tap water? If you don?t have the right showerhead filter or faucet filter, the answer is no. Let me explain why.

Our surface and groundwater supports a variety of living organisms. Some of them are quite beneficial and necessary to support other aquatic life in the ecosystem. The tiniest of them will make human beings quite ill, if they are ingested.

Bacteria, protozoa, viruses and other microscopic organisms thrive in rivers and lakes, not so much in groundwater, generally speaking. Ingesting these organisms causes waterborne illnesses like cholera, typhoid, Legionnaires and other waterborne illnesses with names that are difficult to pronounce.

What Are Disinfection Products in Tap Water?

This is important to understand; in order to answer is tap water safe for bathing and showering. Public sources must be treated with chemicals and other methods in order to rid them of the illness causing microbes. When these organisms die, other chemicals are released. They are referred to as disinfection byproducts or trihalomethanes.

Trihalomethanes or THMs, for short, are present in any publicly treated supply. If you have a private well that requires a disinfection method, they are also present in your supply. At one time, it was thought that THMs were only a threat if they were consumed, like microbes.

Why is Tap Water Dangerous?

But, because they vaporize in a hot bath or shower, they are inhaled, quickly entering the bloodstream. They are also absorbed through the skin, where they enter the organs.

THMs are listed as human carcinogens; they cause cancer. Researchers attempting to answer the question; is tap water safe for bathing and showering have come to this conclusion.

The levels to which we are normally exposed during the course of the day adversely affect the body on a cellular level. This exposure doubles your risk of developing bladder cancer at some point in your life. It increases your risk of colorectal cancer by at least 40%.

The chemicals are also toxic to the nervous system. The ?safe? levels, as determined by the EPA, are only safe for a 175 pound adult and only if the only exposure comes through drinking unfiltered tap-water. In other words, the nervous systems of small adults and children may be adversely affected by these chemical compounds.

Why Water Can Contaminate the Air?

When it comes to the people who live in your home, is tap water safe for bathing and showering? The answer is no. The compounds build up in the atmosphere of your home.

If you are not going to invest in an effective showerhead filter, you should probably start leaving your windows open, just to air out the house, everyday. But if you are check out this website: CleanWaterPure.com for safe and

effective water filters.

Be careful when you go shopping. Most showerhead filters only remove chlorine, because it dries out your hair and skin. It also triggers asthma attacks, as it becomes vaporized, as well. But, THMs are a bigger threat to your overall long-term health and that of your family.

So, is tap water safe for bathing and showering? What do you think? Hopefully, I?ve convinced you of the answer.

entertainment news uk: Change Management - Types of ...

Change happens! The flow of evolution in business is imperative. Indeed, change is all around us and for many it is an exciting idea but for some it is quite a frightening prospect.

Change Management Training is put in place by many companies and organisations in order to ensure that all members of the company are skilled, trained and comfortable with any changes which are about to occur in the near future. As the entire business world is moving and changing quickly, Change Management is vital to many companies.

Change Management allows an element of movement towards future success within a company. It also allows staff to be more organised and understand the changes and work together as a team. The management of change can refer to changes in anything from mission, strategy, operation, technology, attitude, to behavior. Changes in all these aspects are important to companies and employees. Therefore it is important to execute these changes punctually and decisively. However because this can be difficult in some circumstances there are now dedicated change managers with a great deal of experience in the area which can help companies change for the better along with ensuring all changes run smoothly.

However when companies want to import change the primary hurdle is getting other people within the company on side. It is extremely important to acknowledge and understand why resistance is occurring within the organisation.

An important aspect of imposing change upon individuals is answering their first question which will be; "what's in it for me?" We are all human and only desire change if it will benefit us. So, don't be afraid to answer this question honestly. But always remember if people do not understand what benefits they will receive from such a change they will be less likely to respond positively.

Team work is vital in all companies especially when changes are being made. Many people feel unstable and unsure when a change in their job is taking place, especially if they do not understand the why's of this particular change. Therefore it is important that all members of the organisation understand the change as it will allow all members of this 'team' to be involved in all changes. It is important that change does not happen?to?someone but?with?them.

Change Management?has gained a great deal of popularity amongst some of the largest companies nationwide. Change Management is a science in itself which allows companies to gain organisational skills and in turn ensures all changes to run smoothly. Change Management experts achieve the desired goal by placing a large focus on the company and how it works. Whilst doing this they also arrange group meetings in order to maintain a team spirit across the company.

Google sells small tablet, challenges Kindle Fire

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Google unveiled its attempt to catch up to Apple and Amazon in the growing market for tablet computers. It also provided a titillating glimpse at its vision of a digital future through the mind-boggling lens of Internet-connected glasses.

The debut of a long-anticipated tablet computer bearing Google's brand and equipped with its latest operating software kicked off an annual conference for about 6,000 computer programmers.

Although the tablet drew plenty of applause, the biggest crowd-pleasing moment came near the end of a nearly two-hour performance Wednesday when Google conjured a scene worthy of a "Mission Impossible" movie.

After Google co-founder Sergey Brin trotted on stage during the middle of a presentation, he cut away to a live video feed showing a group of skydivers the company hired to jump out of a blimp hovering about 7,000 feet above downtown San Francisco.

The skydivers were wearing a pair of Internet-connected glasses. That allowed the audience inside to see what the skydivers were seeing as they parachuted on to the roof of the building where the conference was being held.

The glasses are still a work in progress, although Google gave U.S. programmers attending the conference a chance to order a $1,500 prototype that they can start experimenting with early next year.

The Google-branded tablet, called the Nexus 7, will start shipping next month in a direct challenge to Amazon.com Inc.'s Kindle Fire. The tablet also could appeal to consumers looking for a less expensive, less sophisticated alternative to Apple Inc.'s iPad.

The Nexus 7 is designed specifically for Google Play, an online store that sells movies, music, books, apps and other content. That mirrors Amazon's strategy with the Kindle Fire, although Amazon's strength in online retailing has seeded its store with a more extensive selection than Google Play. Amazon declined comment.

The size and price of the Nexus 7 also matches the Kindle Fire. Both have 7-inch screens and sell for $199. The Nexus 7 is slightly lighter at about 0.75 pound, compared with the Kindle Fire's 0.9 pound.

By contrast, the iPad's screen measures nearly 10 inches diagonally and weighs 1.44 pounds. Apple sells its latest models for $499 and up, though an older version is available for $399.

Customers can start ordering the Nexus 7 through Google on Wednesday, initially in the U.S., Canada and Australia. The device won't ship until mid-July.

Google's announcement that it's putting its brand on a tablet comes a week after Microsoft Corp. did the same thing. Both moves risk alienating Google's and Microsoft's hardware partners. Those companies, in turn, could be less inclined to work closely with Google and Microsoft.

The Nexus 7's price looks like a relative bargain, given that it boasts more features than the Kindle, including a front-facing camera with 1.2 megapixels. The Kindle is believed to be a roughly break-even product for Amazon at $199. Samsung Electronics Co. sells a tablet similar to Google's for $250.

Andrew Rassweiler, an analyst with IHS iSuppli, said he suspects Google will be selling the Nexus 7 at a loss.

Google has previously put its own brand on a flagship line of "Nexus" smartphones. But that market is more mature than the tablet market, and there was less risk of Google alienating partners, particularly because it didn't price the phones lower than the norm.

Much like the Nexus phones, the Nexus 7 tablet will be a showcase for a new version of Google's Android operating system ? this one called Jelly Bean.

Although the tablet carries the Google brand, the machine will be made by AsusTek Computer Inc. Google recently expanded into the device-making business with its $12.5 billion purchase of Motorola Mobility, but the company has stressed that it intends to continue to rely on Asus and other manufacturers that have embraced Android.

Jeff Orr, an analyst with ABI Research, said Microsoft's announcement of its Surface tablet last week and Google's Nexus 7 add up to a "troubling" situation for tablet makers such as Samsung Electronics Co., which makes the Galaxy line.

When a software-supplying partner turns around and puts out its own hardware product, "is that a partner or an enemy?" Orr asked.

Orr also questioned whether Google's strategy of pricing the tablet low is really going to win it any fans in the long term. Apple, he noted, dominates the tablet market with a product that's expensive but works well.

There are already other Android-powered tablets on the market, but none have proven nearly as popular as the iPad or Kindle Fire. That has raised worries at Google as more people rely on tablets to surf the Internet.

For Google, advertising dollars are at stake. If Apple retains its dominance and other players such as Amazon and Microsoft gobble up the rest of the sales, they could set up their operating systems in ways that de-emphasize Google's Internet search engine and other services. Apple develops its own system, while Amazon modifies Android for use in Kindles. Microsoft's will run on a new version of Windows.

Apple already has announced that the next version of the iPad operating system will abandon Google's digital maps as the built-in navigation system. That shift could cause neighborhood merchants to spend less money advertising on Google.

The iPad currently has about 68 percent of the tablet market, according to Forrester Research. The research firm expects the increasing competition to whittle the iPad's share to 53 percent in 2016, with Android-powered tablets at about 30 percent and Windows tablets accounting for the remainder. Forrester predicted 760 million tablets will be in use by 2016.

"Google's user base for music, books, and movies is not nearly as strong as Apple or Amazon, so it will take time to build a strong customer base" for the Nexus 7, predicted Forrester analyst Frank Gillett.

He also said the Nexus 7 and other Android tablets are at a disadvantage because computer programmers still haven't built as many compelling applications for that platform as they have for the iPad.

In another expansion into consumer electronics, Google also announced a home entertainment device called Nexus Q that is similar to Apple TV, a small box that can stream music and movies over Internet connections. The Nexus Q sends content from your personal collection or YouTube to your existing TV and speaker systems. You control it through a separate Android phone or tablet.

The Nexus Q, which Google is calling the world's first "social streaming device," will be available in July in the U.S. initially and sell for $299. Apple TV currently sells for just $99. Other Internet-streaming devices, such as the Roku, that connect to TVs sell for even less than that.

The Internet-connected glasses that Google demonstrated won't be cheap either, although Brin told reporters Wednesday that the company plans to charge consumers significantly less than the $1,500 that developers had to pay for prototypes. The glasses, which Google is calling Project Glass, probably won't be released to the mass market until early 2014, Brin said.

"It's not a commodity product," Brin said. "We view this as a premium sort of thing."

Google began developing the Internet-connected glasses in a secret research lab more than two years ago and announced what it was working on in April. Wednesday's presentation marked the first extended demonstration of how the glasses might work.

Also on Wednesday, Google unveiled a new search tool to help you get the right information at the right time on your mobile device. Called Google Now, the tool will be part of Jelly Bean, which will be available in mid-July. Some devices, including the Galaxy Nexus, will get the upgrade automatically over the air.

With Google Now, if you say "traffic," for example, it will look at your usual commute to work and show you alternative routes if there's a lot of traffic. It will tell you the scores of your favorite sports teams automatically, and it will keep you up to date on flight statuses if you are flying somewhere.

The feature bears resemblance to the Siri virtual assistant on Apple's iPhone.

Jelly Bean will also come with the ability to share photos by tapping two phones together.

Why Self-Publishing Is a Tragic Term | Jane Friedman

The Birds Tree by ploop26 / DeviantArt

The Birds Tree by ploop26 / DeviantArt

Today?s guest post is by Ed Cyzewski. You may recall him from his previous post here, When Self-Publishing Is More Useful as a Marketing Tool.

My friend Shawn recently released a book that shares his journey into full-time writing. It involves a failed small business, $50,000 in debt, a difficult return to his parents? basement, and a plan to rebuild his life through writing. It?s a unique, inspiring story, but that?s not what really caught my attention about his book.

Shawn invited nine colleagues to share their own stories about writing full time. I shared how I advertise my freelance blogging and editing services. I?m sure there are plenty of books out there that include short stories and case studies, but Shawn actually wove each contributor?s essay into his own story, explaining how each of us provided ideas for his work.

Technically speaking, Shawn self-published this book. However, his community-based approach provides lessons for both commercial publishing and self-publishing.

Writers are already cooped up in corners of their bedrooms or in back corners of cafes. Must the publishing process add another layer of isolation?

Many authors have wisely moved away from the term ?self-publishing.? I?ve seen words like ?independent? or ?indie? publishing tossed around. They help characterize this kind of publishing as an independent business model, not necessarily a solitary pursuit. The very use of the word ?self? belies a tragic individualism and reliance on ?self? in publishing today. To speak of ?self-publishing? is a linguistic mistake that could hint that publishing is all up to you.

I am one of many nonfiction authors whose nose has been rubbed in the word ?platform? long enough to realize that I can?t sell books on my own. Nonfiction authors especially need tribes, subscribers, followers, friends, pins, backers, and enough Facebook shares to convince hipsters that your writing is ?so over.?

People have to decide that our work is valuable and share it, buy it, or preferably do both.

Shawn didn?t just build a community in order to market his book. He built a community around creating a book?including the writing and cover design. When it came time to promote his project, he had a community of writers who were eager to share his creation because we all shared a part in it.

Shawn?s book is one of many projects that have prompted me to rethink my future publishing plans. While I?m already pitching several book projects with a variety of co-authors, I?m beginning to explore what ?community publishing? could look like.

I?ve already worked hard to build a community of writing colleagues through blogs, social media, and writing conferences, and now I?m trying to match these colleagues with my own community publishing projects. One particular proposal involves a series of essays about leaving and returning to the church. My own story creates the framework for the book, but brief essays by my colleagues add depth and insight that I could never offer on my own.

I?m still hoping to publish these community projects commercially, but the thought of self-publishing them isn?t quite so daunting since I wouldn?t be on my own throughout the publishing process.

The word self-publishing tells a lie of sorts?at least, it?s a lie for most of us. It hints that you can publish a book successfully on your own. For most of us, that simply isn?t true. For the great majority of us, self-publishing a book on our own will also be lonely and unpleasant.

I?ve seen authors and publishers produce incredible books with community-driven models. While I?ll still pitch some projects that are solely my own, my long-term publishing plans revolve around sharing my work with a community of writers and rising together.

If community publishing strikes you as too intimidating, keep in mind that many bloggers already know how community publishing works. Bloggers who host guest posts make community publishing work. In fact, many of the most popular blogs accept guest posts.

Perhaps community publishing is a passing fad, but I?m betting that it provides an ideal way forward for writers who are tired of staring at the wall in a caf?. If it flops, at least I?ll have a few friends willing to buy me a cup of tea so we can talk about our next project.

(AP) ? Americans can't seem to shake their uneasy feeling about the economy.

Consumer confidence fell in June for the fourth straight month as worries about the economy outweighed relief at the gas pump, according to a private research group.

The Conference Board said Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index is at 62. That's down from the 64.4 reading in May and the 63.2 analysts were expecting. The index remains well below the 90 reading that indicates a healthy economy ? a level it hasn't been near since the recession began in December 2007. But it's far from the all-time low of 25.3 reached in February 2009.

The indicator is widely watched because consumer spending, including major items like health care, accounts for 70 percent of U.S. economic activity. The index illustrates that Americans are worried about hiring, home values, the stock market and a worsening European economy that some fear will hurt the U.S.

"Consumers were somewhat more positive about current conditions, but slightly more pessimistic about the short-term outlook," said Lynn Franco, director of Economic Indicators at The Conference Board in a statement. "If this trend continues, spending may be restrained in the short-term."

Worries about job and income growth seemed to weigh the heaviest on consumers in the index survey, which is based on a poll conducted from June 1 through June 14 with about 500 randomly selected people nationwide.

Those stating jobs are "hard to get" increased to 41.5 percent from 40.9 percent, while those expecting more jobs in the months ahead declined to 14.1 percent from 15.4 percent. Meanwhile, the proportion of consumers expecting an increase in their incomes declined to 14.8 percent from 15.7 percent.

Consumers' dwindling confidence follows a sharp slowdown in hiring in April and May. Meanwhile, a measure of the number of people applying for unemployment benefits over the past month has reached a six month high, the government said last week. That increase suggests that layoffs are rising and June could be another lackluster month for hiring. The government is slated to release June data next week.

Still, Americans have some reasons to be optimistic. A widely watched home price index, released Tuesday, offered some hope for the housing market. Home prices rose in nearly all major U.S. cities in April, according to The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home price index. That's the second straight month that prices have increased in a majority of U.S. cities.

Shoppers also are getting some relief at the gas pump. Gas prices have falling from their peak in early April. Gasoline prices fell 4 cents over the weekend to a national average of $3.41 per gallon, according to auto club AAA, Wright Express and the Oil Price Information Service. And experts say gas could fall another 11 cents by July 4, next week

Despite the positive signs, Americans appear to be hoarding cash. Several companies, from restaurants to home goods sellers, have recently said customers are pulling back on spending in recent weeks unless they are lured into stores by big discounts.

Bed Bath and Beyond last week forecast lower second-quarter earnings than analysts expected and said it needed to use more coupons to get people to spend. At furniture chain Ethan Allen Inc., executives said customer traffic is slowing and shoppers are taking more time to make purchasing decisions.

And Darden Restaurants Inc., which operates Olive Garden and Red Lobster restaurants, expects earnings short of Wall Street expectations, and it said customers were turned off by the $1 increase for Red Lobster's dish "Festival of Shrimp."

Given growing uncertainty about the economy, Michael P. Niemira, chief economist at The International Council of Shopping Centers, trimmed his sales forecast by 0.5 percentage point for June on Tuesday.

He now expects revenue at stores opened at least a year to be up 3 percent to 3.5 percent. That follows a 4 percent rise in May. The figures exclude drug stores. The metric is considered a key indicator of a retailer's health because it excludes stores that open or close during the year.

Major retailers such as Target Corp. and Macy's Inc. will be reporting final sales for June 5.

Corporate money men fill the political void at Rio+20

Move over Ban Ki-moon, the corporate money men are in town. That was the message from the final hours of the otherwise damp-squib Earth Summit in Rio de Janiero last week.

On Friday, as delegates prepared to go home, UN officials toured the halls explaining why the official declaration struck by government delegations earlier in the week, titled The World We Want, was so devoid of concrete commitments to fight planetary perils and injustice.

"We can't legislate sustainable development in the current state of international relations," said Achim Steiner, head of the UN Environment Programme. There was no political leadership, and hence no political commitment to protect the oceans, and only platitudes where there should be schemes to uplift the poor and create a green economy.

But despite the political void, the organisers could still claim a major success. Corporations, who were largely absent from the first Earth Summit in Rio 20 years ago, were coming to the table, Steiner said. Where politicians shrank from commitments, corporations were overflowing with them.

The conference secretary-general Sha Zukang said some 1500 business leaders had attended the summit, and had stumped up half a trillion dollars of corporate cash to fund various UN agendas, though it was unclear how much of this was new money and how much was simply mainstream corporate investment.

Among the new corporate actors at the heart of UN policymaking on the green agenda is Chad Holliday, chairman of the Bank of America and former president of DuPont. He is now also co-chair of the Sustainable Energy For All initiative led by UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon that aims to unlock private investment to deliver its eponymous pledge by 2030. The initiative would be "the greatest public-private partnership of all time", Holliday said at the summit.

Ban's energy plan, which was heavily promoted by UN officials throughout the conference, aims to connect 1.3 billion people to electricity and end the reliance of more than 2 billion people on lung-damaging charcoal and firewood for cooking. It also has targets for doubling the contribution of sustainable sources to world energy, and improving energy efficiency.

Business had already pledged $50 billion, said Holliday's co-chair of the initiative, Kandeh Yumkella, director-general of the UN Industrial Development Organization: "More than a billion people will benefit." Business too, agreed Holliday. "Companies are here because they see opportunities."

The energy plan is seen within the UN as a prototype for achieving the kind of sustainable development goals that the conference agreed should be drawn up in the next three years. Ban said that in future "business leaders [are] to be part of the creation and promotion of new sustainable development goals."

The conference could not agree on what the goals should cover, but topics are likely to include food, water supply and transport. The Asian Development Bank, along with seven other development banks, announced that in the coming decade it hopes to mastermind public and private investment of $175 billion on greener transport systems in developing countries, including railways, buses and more fuel-efficient vehicles.

For many here, the future of the UN's activity in promoting sustainable development looks less like a coalition of national governments driven by common goals, and more like a series of corporate initiatives.

Tim Wirth, a veteran US environmental policymaker who now heads the UN Foundation, which aims to link up the UN system with business, told a press conference that this new world order was on view already. "Public-private partnerships are the dominant theme here in Rio," he told a press conference. "The official document is less important."

    MapMyRide+ (for iPhone)

Most tech-connected bicycle nerds have heard of the iPhone app MapMyRide+ ($2.99; limited free version also available), made by the same company that developed the equally well-known MapMyRun. Both apps track your route via GPS while you run or cycle, and show you on a map where you went when you're done. It also displays length, in both time and distance, as well as pace, maximum speed, and a few other statistics.

Although MapMyRide is a solid companion for cyclists?not to mention an excellent tool for new cyclists in particular?it doesn't have quite the same appeal as the slightly more sophisticated Cyclemeter (for iPhone) ($4.99, 4 stars). Both apps are very good, deserving of equal product-rating scores, but Cyclemeter is our Editors' Choice because everything you need to use it is built in. MapMyRide+, on the other hand, puts some of your data onto the Web, preventing you from accessing it via the iPhone, and a few features are only available with an account upgrade, which costs extra. With Cyclemeter, you get the whole kit and caboodle for five bucks. In my testing, the apps functioned equally well. If you don't mind using the Web to access some of your stats and have no need for the Pro features, then download MapMyRide+ for $3.

    Features
Sign up for a free MapMyFitness account before you install MapMyRide+, just to make the setup quicker. When you launch the app, you can sign in, and your rides will sync to your Web account from here on out.

When you're ready to ride, just launch the app and go. Like most cycling apps, MapMyRide+ works best when it's visible and accessible?locked into an iPhone bike mount, that is. MapMyRide+ has one great feature, not found in Cyclemeter, for cyclists who keep their phone in their pocket or bag: time delay. Let's say that before you hit the pavement, you suit up in your bike gear and stash your phone securely away? and then have to lock the door and descend a flight of stairs before you put your feet on the pedals. The time delay feature gives you additional seconds or minutes, as much as you set, to get ready to ride. The iPhone vibrates when the countdown ends. Serious cyclists likely have a mount on their handlebars and won't need this feature, but for beginners, it's a boon.

The main display of the MapMyRide+ app shows the mapped route as collected by GPS data, average and current speed, average and current pace, and total ride time. It has everything you'd expect. I prefer Cyclemeter's display a little more because the numbers are larger and easier to read. On MapMyRide+, some of the digits are too small to see while cycling.

After you finish a ride, a summary shows duration, calories burned (if you have entered your height, weight, age, and sex), average speed and pace, and maximum speed and pace.

Splits (that is, splitting your ride into segments, wherein each segment contains its own stats that you can compare with the others) are supported, and you can set the split distance to any interval you choose. When I set up my splits to show 1.5 mile intervals, however, the data never showed up anywhere. Cyclemeter, meanwhile, automatically calculates splits, but only for five-mile stretches.

    Maps
MapMyRide+, as well as other apps from MapMyFitness, has a strong social bent. The app encourages sharing, like posting a completed ride to Facebook, as well as connecting with friends to compete with them for best times. Cyclemeter contains sharing and social interaction, too.

Another interesting social feature in MapMyRide is the ability to look for routes that other users in your geographic area have ridden. This feature has a lot of potential value, but it largely depends on your area and how many other users are in it. The straight shot from the Bronx to midtown Manhattan via Sixth Avenue didn't exactly convince me that every route's a winner.

    Audio, Music, and More
As with Cyclemeter, MapMyRide+ contains audio feedback, like mile markers or a cue that you're moving too slow, which you can tailor.

Accessing playlists, or setting one up on the spot, is simple. MapMyRide+ gives you a quick access button to your music selection. Cyclemeter puts it in a window that you can swipe to in a second. Both options make it easy to change the soundtrack.

While MapMyRide+ also includes a food logging component right in the app, which Cyclemeter does not, it's not one I would use. The idea is that you can count calories in as well as burned, but the system just isn't thorough. For example, you can enter food values of whole integers only (I ate half a banana with my breakfast and felt really frustrated at not being able to enter the correct intake). Simply put, the calorie feature is nowhere near as useful as dedicated calorie-counting apps, like MyFitnessPal and Lose It!

The Cyclemeter app has a few bonus features that you won't find in MapMyRide+. One is a calendar that shows with icons whether you completed a ride that day and if it was better or worse than your typical times for that particular route. Another is a complete summary by day, week, month, year, or all time that shows tallies, averages, and your other stats. MapMyRide+ only shows your ten most recent rides in the app. Through the Web account, you can see a little more information, but it's not tallied. To get unlimited access to all your routes, you need to buy at least a "Bronze Pro" membership (from $5.99 per month). Other content for Pro eyes only includes advanced training plans (e.g., training for a race) and a personalized workout calendar. For casual cyclers, the lack of these features in the $2.99 app probably isn't a deal-breaker, but advanced riders should know about the extra cost.

A Solid App, But Experts Can Do Better
For $3, MapMyRide+ is a great app, especially for cyclists who consider themselves beginners or casual at the sport. More advanced riders will almost definitely be happier paying $2 more for Cyclemeter, our Editors' Choice.

The Author's Business Plan | Writing and Publishing News

In order to determine the potential for a product, you develop a business plan. When that product is a book, you write a book proposal.

Even before writing a book, there are certain things that you need to know. And this is true whether you?re writing a memoir, novel, children?s storybook, chapbook, historical, how-to, self-help or coffee table book. If you are seeking some measure of success with your book project, you must find out:

? Is there a market for this book?
? What titles compete with yours?
? How does your book differ from others on this topic?
? Will your novel appeal to the same audiences as other top selling books?
? Who is your target audience and how can you reach them?
? What are your publishing options?
? What are the possible consequences of your publishing choices?
? What are your responsibilities as a published author?
? How will you promote your book once it is published?

A well designed book proposal will answer these important questions. It will also help you to determine:

? How realistic is your vision for this book?
? What is the best way to organize or present your book?
? How can you make it more salable?

I?m one of many professionals who recommend writing a book proposal even before writing the book. You might argue (and believe me, many new authors do), ?But, I?m in creative mode?I need to write this book now.? Sure, go ahead and write a book on a whim. I?ve done it. It?s great fun?an enjoyable exercise. But should you decide that this book must be published, be aware that you might need to do some rewriting in order to snag a traditional publisher or to address a measurable segment of readers to make your book worthwhile.

Memoir authors seem especially reluctant to let anything outside of them influence their book. I was told recently, ?This is my memoir and it must be told my way.? Okay, but if you write a book proposal first, you might discover even subtle ways to make your memoir more desirable to a publisher and, even more important, your audience.

But even an excellent book will fail if there?s nobody promoting it. And promotion is the author?s job. So, while you are planning your book, you should also be building your platform.

Establish Your Platform Before Writing the Book
Your platform is your reach, your way of attracting readers, your connections to your audience. It includes your mailing lists and your promotional skills, for example. If your platform is lacking, here are some steps to take.

? Become a better public speaker. Join a Toastmasters club. Seek opportunities to practice your speaking skills. Go out and speak on your topic, if applicable. If you?re writing a historical novel, establish a connection with local, regional and state historical societies, clubs and associations where you might give talks, etc.

? Prepare to give readings. This is a popular method of promoting fiction books or memoirs. Do you have a good reading voice? If you need voice work, get help. And then go out and practice.

? Write articles for national magazines on your topic or in your genre.

? Become columnist or regular contributor to a Web site, newsletter or magazine related to your topic.

? Seek an endorsement for your book or support for your project from a well-known national organization.

? Establish and nurture connections with high profile people in your field or genre.

? Build a massive mailing list and keep adding to it.

? Build a Web site and start a blog related to your book. Offer something of value and promote, promote, promote.

? Take a class or read several good books about promotion in general and book promotion in particular.

? Become familiar with appropriate talk TV and radio shows nationwide and how to land interviews.

    ? Do something newsworthy.

The book proposal is so important that there have been whole books written on the topic. For complete information on writing your book proposal, reference my latest book, Publish Your Book, Proven Strategies and Resources for the Enterprising Author. This is an all-inclusive book on the publishing industry and how you can more successfully navigate it. It?s available at Amazon.com and most other online and downtown bookstores.

The Author?s Series continues tomorrow with a lesson on the importance of and how to keep your audience in mind while you?re writing your book.
