It was a close fight, until it wasn't, but the Greg Jackson product found a way to get it done. Rustam Khabilov was able to get past Jorge Masvidal via unanimous decision at UFC Fight for the Troops 3 (UFC Fight Night 31) at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, on Wednesday evening.
During the first frame, Masvidal was able to stuff all of Khabilov's takedowns and landed several hard counter punches. Khabilov kept the pressure on and scored with good body shots, but it was Masvidal, quite literally, smiling as the frame expired.
In the second round, Masvidal stalked and scored with leg kicks. Khabilov was able to secure back control for a time, although he surrounded a takedown, but wasn't able to do much with it. Masvidal attacked with body shots for the full frame and never let Khabilov string together any momentum in the takedown department.
Then the third round happened.
Seemingly out of nowhere, Rustam landed a spinning back kick that landed flush on the neck, which dropped Masvidal backwards to the mat. Khabilov, however, just couldn't put the ATT product away and past the half way point of the final round, it was Masvidal doing all the pressuring. Masvidal later attempted his own spinning back kick and the Daegestani took his back only for Masvidal to return the favor and then separate.
Khabilov earned the unanimous decision nod, 30-27, 29-28, 30-27. He moves to 17-1 in MMA while Masvidal drops to 25-8.
